  • Joss Moorkens – Media for all 10 Conference

Media For All 10 aims to map the changing profiles of stakeholders in the field of Audiovisual Translation and Media Accessibility, practice and research, and elicit the many complex relations in which human agents engage. A clear shift can be detected in this domain, (re)exploring the role of the concept of “agency” in translation today. In this context, Joss Moorkens, Associate Professor at the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies at Dublin City University and one of the keynote speakers at Media For All 10, tells us more about the role of technology, which has been a key catalyst for the development of the field, both of Audiovisual Translation and of Media Accessibility.

Joss Moorkens is an Associate Professor at the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies at Dublin City University, a Funded Investigator and Challenge Leader at the ADAPT Centre, and a member of DCU’s Institute of Ethics and Centre for Translation and Textual Studies. He has authored or coauthored over 50 journal articles, book chapters, and conference papers on translation technology, human factors in translation technology and machine translation, translator precarity, and translation ethics.

He is General Coeditor of the journal Translation Spaces with Prof. Dorothy Kenny, and coedited the book ‘Translation Quality Assessment: From Principles to Practice‘ (Springer, 2018), and special issues of Machine Translation (2019) and Translation Spaces (2020). He is a coauthor of the textbook ‘Translation Tools and Technologies‘ (Routledge 2023). He leads the Technology working group (with Prof. Tomáš Svoboda) as a board member of the European Masters in Translation network and sits on the advisory board of the Journal of Specialised Translation.

Interview with Claire Dix, director of Sunlight, presented at the 2023 Sydney Film Festival in the program strand “Europe! Voices of Women in Film”.

Sunlight: Claire Dix’s first fiction film, Sunlight, asks a difficult question: How can you separate yourself from the person who makes life worth living? The film follows former drug addict Leon, destabilized when he learns that his sponsor Iver has received a terminal diagnosis and plans to pursue euthanasia. Determined to prolong his mentor’s last days, Leon takes Iver on one last ride through Dublin. We talked to Claire about the birth of this film, the importance of Dublin and surrounding yourself with the right crew. As a director selected by the program Europe! Voices of Women in Film, we then talked about her experience as a female director, her approach to the set, the importance of funds, and the strange tendency of festivals, when they select films shot by women, to ask the age of the directors…

  • Carmen Jaquier – Thunder #SydFilmFest

PODCAST| Federica Scarpa interviews Carmen Jaquier, director of the film Thunder.

To listen to the interview, click on the ► icon on the right, just above the picture

Interview with Carmen Jaquier, director of Thunder, presented at the 2023 Sydney Film Festival in the program strand “Europe! Voices of Women in Film”.

Thunder: In the summer of 1900, the pious 17-year-old Elisabeth learns of the death of her sister Innocente. Snatched from the nunnery where she intended to spend her life, she returns home to the Valais Valley, where her sister’s name has become taboo. Then, an encounter with three boys from the village and Innocente’s hidden diary awakens something in Elisabeth. Thunder, Carmen Jacquier’s debut film, draws on the staggering beauty of mountains and rivers, even dark and wild, as Elizabeth’s desire can be, poised between discovery and devotion to God. With Carmen, we talk about how this film is born, so intense and “wild”, like the forests in which it is shot. But the director also reflects on the idea of sisterhood, understood as support between women, especially in the light of her selection for the program: Europe! Voices of Women in Film.
