At Ora! Fest actor and filmmaker Matthew Modine has presented the first eight minutes of the Ripple Effect documentary series and talked about his commitment as an activist to the environment. He talks to Fred Film Radio also about the new popularity given him by tv series Stranger Things and the possibility to see his scientist Martin Brenner again in the next and last season. We’ll see Modine in Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, while he’s working at his new fiction film as director The Rocking Horsemen.
Ripple Effect: A short film for a proposed documentary series that follows accomplished actor and activist Matthew Modine on a quest to find what Jacques Cousteau called “wavemakers”: extraordinary people making bold attempts to save the planet before it’s too late. Striking a balance between activism and adventure, Matthew and the heroes he visits open our eyes to the wonders of the ocean, the bounty of the land, and all that stands in the way of a prosperous world. Ultimately, these stories are an emotional showcase of human potential and hope, inspiring each of us to participate in the preservation of our Earth.

We’re all complex, and we’re spirits and souls and we have many different parts of our lives. And so being an actor is an important part to me because it’s itself expression and hopefully it can show contribute to a social conversation”.

Festival director Nashen Moodley unpacks this year’s program that includes over 240 films from 67 countries, 37 world premieres and more than 123 Australian premieres. The program is made up of 90 features films and 54 documentaries that “stands as a testament to its ambitious vision, showcasing a dynamic and expansive line-up of both emerging and established filmmakers from around the world”, says Nashen. A selection of thought-provoking films that encourage the audience to reflect on society, human nature and our contemporary global communities.
Sydney Film Festival takes place from 7th to 18th June at its flagship venue the State Theatre, as well as cinemas in the CBD, Newtown, Cremorne, Randwick, Western Sydney and more.

Youth (Spring): Chinese director Wang Bing is back in competition at the Cannes Film Festival with a new film that tells the dark side of the world of work in China. We are in Zhili, 150km away from Shanghai. In this city dedicated to textile production, young workers come from all rural regions crossed by the Yangtze River. They are in their early twenties and share dorm rooms and snacks in the corridors. They work tirelessly one day to raise a child, buy a house or open their workshop. Between them, friendships and love stories are made and unmade according to the seasons, failures and family pressures. Wang Bing tells us about the film’s lengthy production, which required years of shooting and the trust of Zhili workers. Spring is the first of three parts of the film Youth, and it shows, in its cruel reality, the new generation of migrant workers in China’s garment industry.
