  • Verena Paravel – The Fabric of the Human Body #FdP63

PODCAST | Laura Della Corte interviews Verena Paravel, director of the film The Fabric of the Human Body.

In the interview with Verena Paravel director with Lucien Castaing-Taylor of The Fabric Of The Human Body at Festival dei Popoli we talked about a place that experiences daily confrontation with pain, illness, death, the extreme experiences of the human condition. Gradually overcoming all limits, without ever losing its compositional and rhythmic rigor, we talked about the fact that the film shows us how human flesh can become an extraordinary landscape that exists only through the gaze and attention of the other.

The Fabric Of The Human Body: A portrait of five hospitals in the northern districts of Paris, told through innovative medical imaging technologies, a means of creating a multifaceted portrait of the human body, the medical profession and the French capital. The room travels with an almost “Wisemanian” attitude moving through the corridors, passing from the clinics to the operating theaters to the morgue but then accompanies the probes, the scalpels, enters directly into the flesh, forces the eye to participate actively and extremely in the surgical operations and to overcome the limits of the visible and the bearable.

  • Jennifer Baichwal – Into The Weeds #FdP63

PODCAST | Laura Della Corte interviews Jennifer Baichwal, director of the film Into The Weeds.

In the interview with Jennifer Baichwal director of Into The Weeds at Festival dei Popoli we talked about the climate emergency, uncontrolled urbanisation, air and sea pollution, an apocalypse that seems distant in time and space but which concerns us closely.

Into The Weeds: The film by Canadian giant Jennifer Baichwal – director of Watermark (2013) and Anthropocene (2018) – follows former caretaker Lewayne “Lee” Johnson and his fight against Monsanto, an agrochemical multinational acquired by the German pharmaceutical company Bayer in 2018: the man was the first to go to trial in a series of lawsuits involving the thousands of plaintiffs who argue that Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide (and other diphosate-based herbicide Ranger Pro) caused them bad lymphomas. By gaining access to the pharmaceutical company’s internal digital correspondence, the long investigation for the trial that ended in 2018 demonstrated the illness of its executives who, although aware of the risks associated with the use of glyphosate, have always minimized its impact.

  • Jason Loftus – Eternal Spring #FdP63

PODCAST | Laura Della Corte interviews Jason Loftus, director of the film Eternal Spring.

In the Interview with Jason Loftus, director of Eternal Spring at Festival dei Popoli, we talked about a hilarious story of determination to speak out for political and religious freedoms, whatever the cost.

Eternal Spring: A breathtaking sequence shot shows a police round-up in a Chinese city. It is the incipit of the film, made through the 3D animation of the drawings by Daxiong, a Chinese artist drawn to the USA: it is the operation carried out in 2002 and aimed at arresting the followers of the Falun Gong religious movement. Shortly before, the group had managed to hack Chinese state television, broadcasting a message against the government’s persecution of members of the movement. Some will be arrested and die in prison, others will be able to escape and leave the country. Reconstructing the facts, alternating interviews and animation, Eternal Spring relies on Daxiong as an intercessor character who travels in search of survivors, to give shape and what has no visible evidence, but only memories that come to life through drawing and animation. A film that investigates the limits of representation, and the need for testimony in the face of any event of censorship and violence. Oscar nominated for Canada, a work that opens up new dimensions for the story of reality in its freest, most responsible and imaginative form.

PODCAST | Laura Della Corte interviews Denis Dobrovoda, director of the film The Cathedral.

In the interview with Denis Dobrovoda director of The Cathedral at Festival dei Popoli we talked about the process of shooting and also about our search for the truth.

The Cathedral: Moved by an all-encompassing religious sentiment, Justo Gallego has dedicated 60 years of his life to a crazy and ambitious project: the construction of a cathedral in his town, Mejorada del Campo. Without any architectural training and without authorizations, almost always working alone with recycled materials, over the years he has built a grandiose and chaotic structure. Considered by his fellow citizens a madman and an exalted one, the former monk worked with self-denial on the project investing all his resources until, starting from the 2000s, the cathedral was recognized and appreciated by the art world, eventually becoming a ‘tourist attraction. The film uses materials made over several decades to tell the incredible story of Justo and the uncertainties about the future of the cathedral after his death.
