An interview with Hugo Rosak, head of the Film Industry Office of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and KVIFF Eastern Promises, recorded at the 2019 Cairo International Film Festival. Rosak talks with us about the growth of the industry section in Karlovy Vary and how its link with the Middle Eastern film industry has grown over the years – including featuring film productions from the Middle East within its famed East of the West competition. We also ask him about his impressions of the vibes in Cairo for Cairo Industry Days and some of the challenges as well as opportunities that have developed via increased digital technologies for film industry professionals and film industry platforms.

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Song Yang, actor of the film Two/One.
A conversation with Chinese actor Song Yang, who plays one of the two lead characters of Two/One, the debut feature by Juan Cabral, featured in the International Competition of the 2019 International Film Festival and Awards Macao. Song Yang introduces the character that he plays in this movie and tells us a little about how he connected with him. He also shares with us his opinion on whether we live in a lonely world where it is harder to connect with people, as well as whether he dreams a lot – both questions inspired by two of the main themes of Two/One. The actor also talks a bit about overcoming the language barrier in working on this film and reveals that he even learned to play the drums in preparation for it.
Two/One: Kaden is a world-class ski jumper in Whistler, Canada, unexpectedly presented with the chance of reconnecting with his teenage sweetheart. Khai is a corporate executive in Shanghai, China, faced with the fact that the girl he fantasises about on the internet has just started working in his office. The two men go about their lives, without knowing that they are connected. When one sleeps, the other is awake. They dream each other. They are, in some strange way, the same person. They should never meet, but they are destined to do so.

An interview with Orlando Stewart, producer of the film Bellbird, directed by Hamish Bennett. The film was featured in the International Competition of the 2019 International Film Festival and Awards Macao, where this interview was recorded. Stewart talks with us about the film, and how he supported and helped protect Bennett’s vision. He also talks about the rural landscape where the film taked place, and some of the choices and themes of Bellbird, including its quietness and the theme of masculinity as it is explored in the movie.
Bellbird: Ross is a man of few words, and when his wife Beth suddenly dies, so does his spirit. His son Bruce is reluctant to change his own life to help run the farm but can see his father struggling, both physically and emotionally. When young Marley keeps turning up to help Ross with the daily milking, he ignores Ross’s sullen moods. Beth was Marley’s teacher and friend, so he is quietly determined to stick around and help out. Local Connie is also in for the long haul and they come together with others in the community to share the load, but Ross is reluctant to accept their help. Almost a year after Beth’s death the situation unexpectedly comes to a head and Ross has to finally connect with his own grief and let go. He realises he has the support he needs to continue and that his son Bruce needs to find his own place in the world.

Here, Mikhanovsky and Austen talk about the film and whether they believe it to be a deeply American movie, as well as how it has resonated around the world. They also talk about some of the work that went into the making of the film, highlight Lauren “Lolo” Spencer’s stellar performance and more.
Give Me Liberty: Vic, a hapless young Russian American, drives a handicapped transport in Milwaukee where he shares an apartment with his grandfather. Already late on a day when street protests break out, Vic reluctantly agrees to ferry his grandfather and a dozen elderly Russians to a funeral, but they’re distressed when he stops first in a predominantly African American neighborhood to pick up Tracy, a black woman with ALS. On the verge of being fired, Vic’s day goes from bad to worse.

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Pierre-Alain Giraud, director of the film The Empire of Lights.
An interview with Pierre-Alain Giraud, director of the short film The Empire of Lights, presented in the Cinema of Tomorrow section of the 2019 Cairo International Film Festival. The film is based on a novel by Kim Young-ha, and Giraud shares with us the story of its journey, as it interestingly originated from a stage production and was filmed in South Korea. We also reflect upon the distinctive cinematic style of his film, the effective use of voice over, and some of its themes, including the theme of identity.
The Empire of Lights: A North Korean spy is deployed in South Korea. After 20 years without orders, he is instructed to leave his family in Seoul and return.

An interview with filmmakers Carlos Ignacio Trioni Bellone and Santiago Sgarlatta, whose film, The Hypocrites, had its international premiere in the International Panorama section of the 2019 Cairo International Film Festival. In this interview, they reveal to us that their movie was partly inspired by their very own experience of working as wedding videographers. They also share their thoughts on several of the themes of the movie, including class systems and, of course, hypocrisy. They also talk about some of the challenges they faced while making The Hypocrites, which also happens to be their first feature.
The Hypocrites: Nicholas, a young photographer. In the middle of a high-profile wedding, he accidentally records a serious situation. He realizes that he can use the content of the tape to blackmail the people involved. However, he doesn’t know to what extent this secret could endanger his life.
