PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Bob Byington, director of the film Frances Ferguson.

It is a non judgmental tale about a teacher, making very bad choices because of how unhappy she is with her life: Frances Ferguson by Bob Byington is at the 37th Torino Film Festival in the Festa Mobile section. The director comments on the choice of a female protagonist, played by Kaley Wheless and the idea of having his friend Nick Offerman as the narrator of the events, a voice-over interrupting, intervening, anticipating the happenings in the story.

Frances Ferguson: Frances is substitute teacher with a dead marriage and she is bored and discontent. One day at school, she meets a student and she starts an affair with him, which of course she gets nabbed for. She pays the price: an arrest, a trial, incarceration. PODCAST | Angelo Acerbi interviews Bruce McDonald, director of the film Dreamland.

Bruce McDonald knows his last film Dreamland is weird and with a strange narrative pace, not always narratively clear but fascinating. If you let your mind go with it and follow its rhythm is a great film , otherwise it could be more difficult. He knows it , he jokes on this and he explains the reason for this choice.

Dreamland: After getting slighted by a legendary jazz trumpet player, sadistic gang boss Hercules puts his number one enforcer, Johnny Deadeyes, on a mission of revenge. His instructions are simple: cut off the trumpet player’s pinkie finger before he plays a wedding reception. Johnny finds himself getting pushed into dark places: a night club called Al Qaeda, an old-world vampire, a junky child bride and a femme fatale.

  • Beniamino Barrese – The Disappearance of My Mother #EFA2019

PODCAST | Angelo Acerbi interviews Beniamino Barrese, director of the film The Disappearance of My Mother.

Beniamino Barrese is the son of Benedetta Barzini, an iconic model of the sixties , a worldly famous face and body, now fiercely critical of the world of image, also her own, and the portrayal of the women body in advertising and fashion. The film was born as a personal diary of the director, with no intentions of making a film. But then things changed and Beniamino tells us how and why.

The Disappearance of My Mother: Benedetta wants to disappear. An iconic fashion model in the 1960s, she became a muse to Warhol, Dali, Penn and Avedon. As a radical feminist in the 1970s, she fought for the rights and emancipation of women. But at the age of 75, she becomes fed up with all the roles that life has imposed upon her and decides to leave everything and everybody behind, to disappear to a place as far as possible from the world she knows. Hiding behind the camera, her son Beniamino witnesses her journey. Having filmed her since he was a child in spite of all her resistance, he now wants to make a film about her, to keep her close for as long as possible – or, at least, as long as his camera keeps running.
