  • Alyssa Bolsey – Beyond the Bolex #JIFF2019

PODCAST | Cristiana Palmieri interviews Alyssa Bolsey, director of the film Beyond the Bolex.

In the 1920s immigrant inventor Jacques Bolsey aimed to disrupt the early film industry with a motion picture camera for the masses: the iconic Bolex. Over 90 years later, filmmaker Alyssa Bolsey pieces together the fragments of a forgotten family archive to reveal the epic story of her great-grandfather. Interviewing family members and renowned filmmakers, Alyssa travels to Switzerland, and delves into Jacques’ personal diary, film reels and collected images in order to understand the man and his impact on generations of filmmakers (source beyondthebolex.com).

Beyond the Bolex: The Bolex camera has been a trusty tool for filmmakers since its introduction in the 1920s. In this personal film, Alyssa Bolsey delves into her family’s history to uncover the story of the camera’s inventor, her great-grandfather Jacques Bolsey. A Russian refugee living in neutral Switzerland during WWI, Bolsey developed the iconic Bolex as a way to democratise image-making. Archival footage and interviews with renowned filmmakers who still swear by Bolsey’s invention offer an ode to the man and his movie camera.

  • Eddie Tamir – Artistic Director #JIFF2019

PODCAST | Cristiana Palmieri interviews Eddie Tamir, artistic director of the Jewish International Film Festival in Sydney.

Artistic Director Eddie Tamir talks about this year’s program, pointing out that a strong theme that emerges from the stories told in many of the films relates to new Jewish migrants transcending the odds to forge new pathways and achieve ground-breaking things in their new countries. FRED askes Eddie why there are so many Holocaust-themed films produced every year and he explains that “incredible untold stories continue to be unearthed and film makers choose the period to tell their stories because they unfortunately resonate with contemporary racism and antisemitism.”

JIFF 2019 presents 61 films from 23 countries, including 28 features, 29 documentaries, three Australian films, a selection of American indie titles, stories from the Holocaust era, full season screenings of three TV series and a couple of short films.

  • Eve Ash – Man On a Bus #JIFF2019

PODCAST | Cristiana Palmieri interviews Eve Ash, director of the film Man On a Bus.

There is a great deal of Eve Ash’s life in this film. Eve tells FRED how everything started when she answered the phone and a stranger said I think I may be your sister. From that moment Eve was on a mission to discover who she really was. Eve has the ability to mix drama and humour, happiness and tragedy in a very intriguing and engaging way that capture the audience in this well-crafted film.

Man On a Bus: Man on the Bus follows one woman’s journey through a series of shocking revelations about her family history. As Melbourne-based psychologist and filmmaker Eve Ash investigates her parents’ story, she uncovers secrets that upend her life. Gripping interviews, home movies and archival footage plant notes of suspicion and reveal clues — names in a street directory; old 8mm films; mention of a man on a bus in an old recording. A bombshell follows and Eve’s image of her mother, Martha, a Polish survivor of the Holocaust, is blown apart.

  • Matjias Valant, Tine Ugrin – Don’t Forget To Breathe #RomaFF14

PODCAST | Angelo Acerbi interviews Matjias Valant and Tine Ugrin, actors of the film Don’t Forget To Breathe.

The two young lead actors of Don’t Forget To Breathe talk with FRED Film Radio about their experience, the set, the rhythm of a film shooting and the excitement of it. On top of all that, the most rewarding thing is being able to build a character and perform it.

Don’t Forget To Breathe: Fifteen-year-old Klemen lives with his older brother Peter and his single mother in a small and remote rural town. Klemen’s well-established routine to spend time with his beloved brother on tennis court or on the banks of the river near the house is interrupted by the sudden and passionate relationship with his beautiful contemporary Sonja, unleashing a torrent of emotions in Klemen conflicting and reckless actions.

  • Shahad Ameen – Scales #LFF2019

PODCAST | Angelo Acerbi interviews Shahad Ameen, director of the film Scales.

Shahan Ameen talks with Fred radio at the London Film Festival about her first feature, an intriguing and daring fairytale about mermaids and the effect of their appearance in a small fishing village. Besides the mesmerizing look of it, in a dazzling and also old fashioned black and white, the film has a political serious undergoing theme, as she tells herself to Angelo Acerbi.

Scales: Likely to become known as the Saudi mermaid movie, Scales achieves far more than this description whilst laying claim to being the most unlikely drama you’ll see this year. Shahad Ameen’s directorial debut is a visually resplendent tale set in a small Gulf fishing village. Its population live in thrall to the otherworldly creatures they believe reside in the sea. So much so that to keep them pacified, the village has traditionally sacrificed its female children to the creatures. But the drama really begins when one of those girls, Hayat (which means ‘life’ in Arabic), rejects her fate and fights against the patriarchal hegemony.
