PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews director Amat Escalante, who talks about his new film The Untamed of the 73rd Venice Film Festival.

THE UNTAMED. Young mother Alejandra is a working housewife, raising two boys with husband Angel in a small town. Her brother Fabian works as a nurse in a local hospital. Their provincial lives are upset with the arrival of mysterious Veronica. Sex and love can be fragile in certain regions where strong family values, hypocrisy, homophobia, and male chauvinism exist. Veronica convinces them that in the nearby woods, inside an isolated cabin, dwells something not of this world that could be the answer to all of their problems. Something whose force they cannot resist and with whom they must make peace or suffer its wrath.

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews director Karl Lemieux, who talks about their new film Shambles of the 73rd Venice Film Festival.

Fleeing to the backwoods, Vincent unexpectedly reconnects with his brother Michel with whom he’d cut ties many years ago. As he tries to maintain the semblance of a normal life hanging out with friends and playing in his band, Vincent witnesses his brother’s own turbulent downward spiral. Maudite poutine draws us into a darkly dystopian rural world, a place in which violence pervades the everyday but humanity still manages to shine through the cracks.

  • Mel Gibson, Andrew Garfield – Hacksaw Ridge #Venezia73

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews director Mel Gibson and actor Andrew Garfield, who talk about their new film Hacksaw Ridge of the 73rd Venezia Film Festival.

HACKSAW RIDGE is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss who, in Okinawa during one of the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in World War II to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. Doss was the first conscientious objector to ever earn the Congressional Medal of Honor.

John Landis, the American filmmaker, presented a restored version of his 1981 beloved horror classic An American Werewolf in London. The film has certainly stood the test of time, and in our quick chat with Landis, the director tells us of the origins of the film and how he feels his own taste in movies, beginning from so called B-movies, influenced it as well as the other works of his career.

David survives with a bite, but Jack is brutally killed. As David heals in the hospital, he’s plagued by violent nightmares of his mutilated friend, who warns him that he is becoming a werewolf. • Emmanuelle Seigner – Heal the Living #Venezia73

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews actress Emmanuelle Seigner, who talks about her new film Heal the Living of the 73rd Venezia Film Festival.

Playing the role of a mother whose son was taken away from her could not have been an easy thing. Which is why, as Emmanuelle Seigner tells us in this interview shortly after the 73rd Venice Film Festival conference, when she was given the script of Heal the Living, she threw it away, never wanting to think of it again. Until one day, she met the director of the film, Katell Quillévéré, and realized she wanted to work with her.

The film requires a type of solemnity, silence and concentration that sometimes, one would presume, a set works against by its very nature. How did she find the challenge of working with this, and how did the crew and everybody on set help her out in achieving her final performance? Find out.

HEAL THE LIVING: It all starts at daybreak, three young surfers on the raging seas. A few hours later, on the way home, an accident occurs. Now entirely hooked up to life-support in a hospital in Le Havre, Simon’s existence is little more than an illusion. Meanwhile, in Paris, a woman awaits the organ transplant that will give her a new lease on life.

  • Andreas Dalsgaard – The War Show #Venezia73

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Andreas Dalsgaard co-director of The War Show from the 73rd Venice Film Festival.

Andreas Dalsgaard is the co-director of The War Show, screening in the Venice Days section of the 73rd Venice Film Festival. A documentary that talks about a group of friends from Damascus, headed and filmed by a woman who used to be a DJ and quits her job to join the revolution. Through her footage, we witness the evolution of Syria overtime.

The vast amount of footage meant that there were plenty of ways to use them effectively, and the collaboration between the two directors of the film led to the final process. The film is as shocking as it is effective in revealing the men and women that it follows as being quite similar to their so called “Western counterparts,” a label that, nevertheless, Dalsgaard seems to not be comfortable with overall – as much as his understanding of the label of “Western world” in general.

In this interview we discuss the reasons for Obaidah Zytoon to start filming, and the people around her as well.

THE WAR SHOW. In March 2011, radio host Obaidah Zytoon and friends join the street protests against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Knowing the Arab Spring will forever change their country, this group of artists and activists begin filming their lives and the events around them. But as the regime’s violent response spirals the country into a bloody civil war, their hopes for a better future will be tested by violence, imprisonment and death. A deeply personal road movie, The War Show captures the fate of Syria through the intimate lens of a small circle of friends.

AN EVENING WITH BUKOWSKI. This documentary is based on a video interview conducted by Italian journalist Silvia Bizio in January 1981 with writer Charles Bukowski, at his home in San Pedro, California. It was a long night of smoking cigarettes and drinking wine with Bukowski and his soon-to-be wife, Linda Lee Beighle, talking about all kind of subjects, from writers to sex, love and humanity. The interview was shot on Umatic tapes, which were almost lost for over 30 years; they have been digitized and edited along with new shots in Super8 of scenes of Los Angeles today and poems read by Bukowski himself.
