Maros Brojo – artistic director – Fest Anca International Animation Festival

Fest Anca’s artistic director Maros Brojo explained to FRED’s Gonzalo Suárez what the evolution of the festival has been over the past years, overviews its 2015 edition and shares his intentions for the following year.

FEST ANCA INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION FESTIVAL: Fest Anca is an animation festival held in Zilina, the third largest city in Slovakia. As usual, its 8th edition has had the traditional train station and the new synagogue as its two main venues.

Among many other initiatives, the festival includes an international and a national short film competition and this year has featured two masterclasses and retrospectives from famous animation film-makers Tomm Moore and Priit Parn.

The Academy Award-winning actress held a masterclass in the morning, talked to the accredited journalists in the afternoon and received a prize in the evening on the stage of Taormina’s legendary Teatro Antico.

After comments by female colleagues such as Nicole Kidman, Zoe Saldana, Ava Duvernay and Carey Mulligan, Boyhood‘s actress shared her views on the hot battle for gender equality not only in Hollywood but also in America and also explained her no-rule, ad hoc approach to different roles and scenes.

Richard Gere – actor – Oppenheimer Strategies

The popular American actor Richard Gere held a masterclass at the Taormina Film Festival before chatting to the press and being presented an award by Tiziana Rocca.

After 40 years in the business, Richard Gere has starred in four films over the past year. Thus his career seems to be all but over. During our chat, he talked about his experience as an invisible man in New York, the difference between rich and poor in America and the world and his latest works – Franny and Oppenheimer Strategies.

Taormina hosts the screening of a series of recent Cuban film productions for the 61st edition of the festival. The director and screenwriter, the producer and the editor of Melaza reveal the long process of the making of this first feature film and shed light on the situation of Cuban filmmaking now that the US embargo is over.

MELAZA: With the closure of its sugar mill, the little town of Molasses is devastated and lifeless. Aldo and Monica are a young married couple who want to find a way to survive together with the woman’s mother and child. By supporting each other, they are going to do everything they can to save their world without losing their faith.

The film premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and has enjoyed an amazing festival run.

Ellen Pompeo – actress – Grey’s Anatomy

Ellen Pompeo delivered one of the masterclasses at the Taormina Film Festival the same day when she received one of the Tao Awards. She agreed an interview with FRED inbetween.

The well-known star of Shonda Rhimes’ Grey’s Anatomy faces the new season of the TV show not knowing whether she’ll continue this already 12-season-long love story. “I live in the present”, she said during her masterclass, but she also said that Rhimes “feels inspired” to continue the show, which will see Patrick Dempsey (Derek)’s exit this season.

She also told us about her philanthropy and said why she hasn’t taken part in any fiction movie after Grey’s Anatomy kicked off.
