Golshifteh Farahani – actress – Two Friends (Les Deux Amis)
Golshifteh Farahani talks about the construction of her character, her sense of freedom… She also remembers so it was to work with actor-turned-director Louis Garrel, and about how much rehearsing was necessary to reach that level of spontaneity.
TWO FRIENDS (LES DEUX AMIS): Two Friends is about Abel (Louis Garrel) and Clément (Vincent Macaigne), two clumsy, hopelessly romantic young Parisians with nothing but their friendship. When they “kidnap” Mona (Golshifteh Farahani), a wild and fun food-vending girl Clément has fallen in love with, their “bromance” falters.

Louis Garrel – filmmaker – Two Friends (Les Deux Amis)
FRED’s Bénédicte Prot meets filmmaker Louis Garrel, who talks about his latest work Two Friends (Les Deux Amis) from the Semaine de la Critique of the 68th Cannes Film Festival.
Louis Garrel envisages his role as director and scriptwriter as that of a piano-tuner and disk-jockey.
He tells us about co-writing with Christophe Honoré, being in front and behind the camera, his thorough work with the actors to obtain spontaneity and intimacy, the depth of lightness, and passes on a piece of advice from Jean-Claude Carrière which made for a fantastic scene in his film.

Thomas Bidegain – director – Les Cowboys
FRED’s Bénédicte Prot interviews Thomas Bidegain, director of the film Les Cowboys from the Director’s Fortnight programme of the 68th Cannes Film Festival.
Seasoned screenwriter Thomas Bidegain (who has scripted many acclaimed titles and is Jacques Audiard’s long-term collaborator, including on his latest, Dheepan) explains why he decided to try his hand at directing, what he took from his experience alongside other directors, and from his own cinephilia, to make an impressive debut feature that is markedly his own creation.
LES COWBOYS: Les Cowboys tells how a normal family who loves the country music culture is confronted with its very own “Indians” when their daughter Kelly disappears, after enrolling in the Jihad, at a time when no one had a clue in the Western world – for the film starts in 1994 and spans over fifteen years or so.
With splendid mountains and sad songs in the background, we follow a father’s desperate quest, and a son’s continued odyssey to rebuild some form of family, and make peace. A beautifully mastered debut film.

Matthias Schoenaerts – actor – Maryland
FRED’s Bénédicte Prot interviews Matthias Schoenaerts, lead actor in Maryland, the latest film by Alice Winocour, presented in the Un Certain Regard section of the 68th Cannes Film Festival.
Matthias Schoenaerts talks about the way he prepared in order to really embody Vincent, a soldier back between two tours in Afghanistan who silently suffers from PSTD, while being alert enough to protect a rich wife and her kid.
The Belgian actor describes how he actually became his character, blurring the limit between fiction and reality. Matthias Schoenaerts has been rather busy since Jacques Audiard’s Rust and Bone.
He is currently in Thomas Vinterberg’s Far from the Madding Crowd (also starring Carey Mulligan), and soon to be seen in Oscar-winning British director Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl (opposite Eddie Redmayne, amongst others) as well as Italy’s Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming effort, A bigger splash, shot in English with another star-studded cast including Ralph Fiennes and Tilda Swinton.
MARYLAND: A soldier suffering from PTSD, hired to work security in a big mansion, becomes a walking paranoid bomb, in this enclosed space, as he manages to save to day.

Alice Winocour – director – Maryland
FRED’s Bénédicte Prot interviews Alice Winocour, who presented her latest work Maryland in the Un Certain Regard section of the 68th Cannes Film Festival.
French director Alice Winocour talks about her continued exploration, in her second feature, of the theme of the dysfunctional body. She explains why she had Matthias Schoenaerts in mind specifically when she wrote the part and how they worked together to represent the borderline state of a soldier back from war, to the point that her actor became the character.
MARYLAND: A soldier suffering from PTSD (Jacques Audiard’s Rust and Bone’s Matthias Schoenaerts, also starring in Thomas Vinterberg, Tom Hooper and Luca Guadagnino’s newest projects), hired to work security in a big mansion and protect the lady of the house (Diane Kruger) and her kid, becomes a walking paranoid bomb, in this enclosed space, as he manages to save to day.
