  • Peter Lichter, Bori Maté – The Philosophy Of Horror #TFF38

PODCAST | Angelo Acerbi interviews Peter Lichter and Bori Maté, directors of the film The Philosophy Of Horror.

Peter Lichter and Bori Maté are interested in the theoretical analysis , and they love horror films. So, why not putting the two things together? They used a book as a literary base and they started their own travel within images and sounds of a genre, decomposing it into concepts and qualifications. An interesting approach, as you can hear in this talk.

The Philosophy Of Horror: The film is an abstract and visual adaptation of Noël Carroll’s book with the same title published in 1990, which proposes a careful examination of the film genre. Péter Lichter and Bori Máté use the decayed, hand-painted 35mm film of the classic horror movie A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) and of the sequel A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985) to propose a reflection on horror through an experimental audiovisual product.

  • Cody Calahan, Chad Archibald – The Oak Room #TFF38

PODCAST | Angelo Acerbi interviews Cody Calahan and Chad Archibald, director and producer of the film The Oak Room.

Cody Calahan and Chad Archibald , director and producer of The Oak Room tell us something more about the film: the origin and the adaptation from the stage play and the challenge of telling many stories into one another , the aim of not making a classical horror film but a thriller with a horror flare, and the snow blizzards in Canada

The Oak Room: During a violent snowstorm, Paul, a bar owner in a small Canadian town, has just closed his bar when Steve, a tramp with a load of bags, asks to come in. After the initial tension between the two, Steve tells the bartender a story to settle an old debt between them. It is the story of another snowy night, another bar, The Oak Room, and another bartender whom an unknown guy visits shortly after closing time. But even within this story there is another one, and then yet another one. The night turns into a dark tale, between violence and identity exchanges.

  • Rezwan Shahriar Sumit – The Salt in Our Waters #TFF38

PODCAST | Angelo Acerbi interviews Rezwan Shahriar Sumit, director of the film The Salt in Our Waters.

Rezwan Shahriar Sumit directs a lean and poetic film, where art and superstition clash, where nature rules but it is Allah that rules everything anyway, where simple people can be manipulated and where life is anyway happy and simple, too. The film has been selected for and developed through the Audience Design program of the Torino Film Lab.

The Salt in Our Waters: For his latest art installation, Rudro journeys to a remote mangrove isle on the Bangladeshi Delta, a day’s boat ride and a world away from modern, crowded Dhaka. Welcomed by the local fishermen and their leader Chairman, Rudro’s modern ideas and lifelike sculptures enchant the village boys and his landlord’s daughter. But when the local Ilish catch proves elusive, the elders blame Rudro’s “idolatry” for the curse of empty nets. In this vanishing land where sea and sky merge, a storm is brewing and change – welcome or not – is coming.

  • Maria Komninos – The Apaches of Athens #PordenoneSilent

PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Maria Komninos, head of the Greek Film Archive.

Maria Komninos, head of the Greek Film Archive, talks with us about the restoration of long-lost film, The Apaches of Athens, a landmark Greek film recently screened in the Limited Edition of the Pordenone Silent Film Festival. Originally released in 1930, this is a landmark film in Greek film history, though it was lost for several decades. Komninos talks about what makes this film so important and takes us through the process that it led to its return to cinema screens. She also talks about the Greek Film Archive and comments on today’s challenges of the film preservation sector.

The Apaches of Athens: Oi Apachides ton Athinon [The Apaches of Athens] is the first screen adaptation of an operetta by Nikos Hadjiapostolou (libretto by Yannis Prineas) that premiered on 19 August 1921 to wild acclaim and remains celebrated for its revolutionary populist treatment of working-class characters – “Apaches” in this case comes from the French term for members of an underworld subculture of the period. The film takes liberties with the operetta plot while notably incorporating atmospheric scenes of daily life in Athens circa 1930.
