FRED is pleased to present the new episode of Accessible Cinema, a new periodical programme on media accessibility and inclusion, fostered by Sub-ti Access. This programme aims to inform its listeners and keep you updated on the status of media accessibility. We hope to raise awareness on accessibility in media and live entertainment, which is one of the 8 priority areas of the European Disability Strategy 2010 – 2020.
In this new episode of Accessible Cinema we will know more about the changes that the Covid-19 pandemic has brought to the field of media accessibility. How is the cinema market changing, especially in terms of media accessibility services? What is the role of online streaming platforms in making entertainment accessible to everyone? Are we going towards a “digital media accessibility”? To know more about that, Francesca Raffi interviews Jorge Diaz-Cintas, Professor of Translation and founder director of the Centre for Translation Studies (CenTraS) at University College London.
Jorge Diaz-Cintas is Professor of Translation and founder director of the Centre for Translation Studies (CenTraS) at University College London. He is the author of numerous articles, special issues and books on audiovisual translation and media accessibility. He was the president of the European Association for Studies in Screen Translation (2002-2010) and is now one of its directors. He is the Chief Editor of the Peter Lang series New Trends in Translation Studies and a member of the international research group TransMedia and the EU LIND (Language Industry) Expert Group. He is the recipient of the Jan Ivarsson Award (2014) and the Xènia Martínez Award (2015) for invaluable services to the field of audiovisual translation.

Thanks to Carlo and Enrico Vanzina, Carol Alt became a legend in the 80’s and 90’s Italian comedies with unforgettable titles like I miei primi 40 anni in 1987. She has recently come back filming in Italy thanks to her participation in the Italian independent comedy produced by Eagle Pictures, Un Figlio di Nome Erasmus – A son named Erasmus acting against some of the most important comedic Italian actors. Carol Alt reveals that Roberto Proia, Eagle Pictures’ executive producer defined her being iconic as the reason why he wanted her in the film. The American actress then proceeds to unveil her desire of acting in a period film impersonating a woman who managed to change the world.

As he’s also receiving a career award, when looking back at his career and filmography, the actor and director talks about possible regrets. As he mentioned before, he thinks comedy is truth and tells the truth about life. The actor has just finished post producing his second film as director, a documentary about cuban scat jazz musician Franscico Fellove called The Great Fellove. The film will be presented at the next San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain.

In this podcast, Doherty talks about his background in theatre and what prompted him to make a film. He also talks about the origins of the story of Redemption of a Rogue, its biblical references and prominent use of a sense of humour.
Redemption of a Rogue: Jimmy is a nihilist who carries around a black leather doctor’s bag containing the rope he plans to hang himself with. Filled with guilt and shame, he returns to his hometown in the cold austere beauty of West Cavan. As soon as Jimmy visits, his ailing father breathes his last. Thunder rumbles and rain starts to pour. But there is a condition in the will… his father cannot be buried on a wet day. Days roll into weeks in an endless rainy purgatory, with some colourful local characters, as Jimmy seeks redemption.
