PODCAST| Cristiana Palmieri interviews Nashen Moodley, director of the Sydney Film Festival.
Australia’s premier international film festival returns this year – virtually. “Since the 66th Sydney Film Festival in 2019, everything and nothing has changed. We aren’t together in a dark cinema sharing new ideas and worlds – but film is still where we look for them. So, Sydney Film Festival is back this year with a virtual program available to all homes across Australia.” (Nashen Moodley, Director)
Nashen Moodley talks about the difficult decision he took in March when the pandemic crisis hit to cancel the festival and why he revisited that decision in May and launched the 67th virtual edition of the Sydney Film Festival. Nashen also talks about the Sydney Film Festival partnership with Australia’s most distinctive streaming service SBS On Demand to present Sydney Film Festival Selects, a collection of 40 Sydney Film Festival titles to binge for free, from 10 June to 10 July. Nashen explores why going virtual is the best way to support the filmmaking industry and film festival audiences in these disruptive times. In fact, the Festival is also part of We Are One: A Global Film Festival, a free, global, online film festival, opening 29 May for audiences everywhere. This first-ever collaboration of the world’s greatest film festivals presents selections from each of the festivals involved. The Sydney Film Festival’s contribution is two ground-breaking Australian films from First Nations directors: Mabo (Rachel Perkins), and Mystery Road (Ivan Sen).

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Amandla Stenberg and André Holland, actors of Netflix tv series The Eddy.
It doesn’t follow the rules of modern TV series, The Eddy, the new work by director Damien Chazelle, that comes from the collaboration between him and Alan Poul, BAFTA Award winner Jack Thorne (National Treasure) and six-time Grammy Award® winner Glen Ballard. The Eddy was presented at the 70th Berlinale in the Series section and it stars Amandla Stenberg and André Holland. The series is set in modern day Paris in a jazz bar among jazz musicians and despite real musicians and original music, is not a musical but a drama with a touch of thriller-noir. Stenberg and Holland reveal how they worked according to the series pace that it follows Jazz rules more than Tv series’s ones.
The Eddy: Directed by Academy Award® winner Damien Chazelle (La La Land), Emmy Award® winner Alan Poul (Tales of the City), Houda Benyamina (Divines) and Laïla Marrakchi (Le Bureau des Légendes), the Netflix original series The Eddy is an eight-episode drama that takes place in the vibrant multicultural neighborhoods of modern-day Paris. Once a celebrated jazz pianist in New York, Elliot Udo (André Holland) is now the co-owner of struggling club The Eddy, where he manages the house band fronted by lead singer and on-again-off-again girlfriend Maja (Joanna Kulig). As Elliot learns that his business partner Farid (Tahar Rahim) may be involved in some questionable practices at the club, secrets begin to come to light that have also been concealed from Farid’s wife Amira (Leïla Bekhti), and when Elliot’s troubled teenage daughter Julie (Amandla Stenberg) suddenly arrives in Paris to live with him, his personal and professional worlds quickly start to unravel as he confronts his past, fighting to save the club and protect those closest to him. The series also stars Melissa George (In Treatment), Adil Dehbi (How I Became a Superhero), Benjamin Biolay (La douleur), Tchéky Karyo (The Missing) and rapper Sopico in his debut on-screen performance.
The Eddy is part of the 70th Berlinale series section and will be on Netflix from May 8th.
