  • Christine Molloy, Joe Lawlor – Rose Plays Julie #LFF2019
    1. PODCAST | Angelo Acerbi interviews Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor, directors of the film Rose Plays Julie.
    2. Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor ( known also under the label of Desperate Optimists) created a gripping drama, that unravels like a thriller. The process was long and multilayered in terms of plot and motivations , as they tell us in this interview at the London Film Festival.

Rose Plays Julie: It’s during a term studying animal euthanasia that veterinary student Rose (Ann Skelly) decides to contact Ellen (Orla Brady), the birth mother who gave her up for adoption. But Ellen, who is now a successful London-based actress, doesn’t want to know. Undeterred, Rose will not be ignored. And curiosity leads her to discoveries that shake the fragile identity she has built for herself.

    3. Aoife O’Kelly – Walking With Shadows #LFF2019
      1. PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Aoife O’Kelly, director of the film Walking With Shadows.
      2. An interview with Aoife O’Kelly, whose feature directorial debut, Walking With Shadows, was presented in the Love strand of the 2019 BFI London Film Festival. In this film, the Irish-born director talks with us about her fascinating journey to shooting her first feature in Nigeria and how she was able to approach the story, based on a book by Jude Dibia, and understand Nigerian culture. But she also talks about the universal themes of the film and how her previous experiences in various roles of film production – from editing to set design an beyond – have contributed to the formation of an auteurial style that is reflected in this film.

Walking With Shadows: Ebele Njoko (Ozzy Agu) has been running all his life. A search for acceptance and love from his family has led him to recreate himself as Adrian – respected father, husband and brother. When his mask is cruelly stripped away, Adrian’s world rapidly unravels. Adapted from Jude Dibia’s award-winning and critically acclaimed novel, Aoife O’Kelly’s articulate and sensitive film deftly discards the sensational for a depiction of queer Nigeria presented with care and incisive observation. The film is anchored by heartfelt performances from Ozzy Agu and Zainab Balogun as Ada, Adrian’s wife. Together, they explore a painful rift in a loving bond. Adrian’s quiet resilience throughout underlines the necessity for one to be self-loving, despite the cost.

      3. Hari Sama – This Is Not Berlin #LFF2019
        1. PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Hari Sama, director of the film This Is Not Berlin.
        2. Director Hari Sama talks with us about his film, This Is Not Berlin, presented in the Dare section of the 2019 BFI London Film Festival. On this interview, he talks about the autobiographical elements of this movie, and how his own adolescence in a more rural area of Mexico helped him shape it. He also shares with us some of his thoughts regarding art, the way in which young people experience art today, and how art is a means of self-discovery as well as expression.

This Is Not Berlin: It’s 1986 and as Mexico’s capital goes World Cup-crazy, 17-year-old Carlos spends his days getting into schoolyard brawls and cruising around town with his rowdy pals to the thumping sounds of Judas Priest. But heavy metal guitar riffs soon give way to post-punk synths when Carlos visits subversive new-wave nightclub Azteca and finds himself immersed in a transgressive world of music, art, politics, drugs and sexual fluidity. Finally feeling like he fits in, the blossoming teen begins to forge his own identity and open himself up to a new and exciting world of untold possibilities. A coming-of-age tale with real bite, Hari Sama’s evocative homage to the anarchic spirit of adolescent rebellion exudes an infectious sense of energy, as well as a poignant pang of melancholy.

Muscle: Simon is stuck in a rut. Consistently failing to meet targets at work, and clinging onto the tail end of a failing marriage, his only happiness is a cheeky pint down the boozer. Determined to make some changes, Simon takes the plunge and joins a no-frills bodybuilding gym. No sooner is he fumbling with the weightlifting equipment than hulking man-mountain Terry approaches with the offer of being his personal trainer. As Simon’s physical transformation begins, his gym buddy slowly infiltrates himself into all parts of his life, forcing Simon to question what Terry’s motivations really are.

          3. Bora Kim – House of Hummingbird #LFF2019
            1. PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Bora Kim, director of the film House of Hummingbird.
            2. An interview with director Bora Kim, who talks about her film, House of Hummingbird, presented in the First Feature Competition strand of the 2019 BFI London Film Festival. Bora tells us about working on the film for six years and finding the right dosage of autobiographical influences. She also talks about the feminist perspective ofHouse of Hummingbird, and the historical context that inspired its 1994 setting – a tumultuous year in Korean history for a number of reasons. Other topics discussed in this interview include the novelistic structure of the film, the importance of the lead character being a young lady and more.

House of Hummingbird: With regular beatings from her brother, the evasions of a feckless boyfriend and a blossoming friendship with a new teacher, teenage Eunhee certainly has a lot on her mind. And with her parents always working late or fighting, it’s starting to feel like she’s invisible. But as Eunhee navigates the first flushes and disappointments of adolescence, she begins to develop her own philosophy towards life. Though Eunhee’s circumstances are often bleak, writer-director Bora Kim brings both humour and elegance to her autobiographical debut, capturing the tiny moments when perceptions shift in a young person’s life. It’s a richly textured depiction of South Korea – encompassing events and attitudes ranging from the collapse of Seongsu Bridge to society’s relationship with violence – all experienced through Eunhee’s wise young eyes.

            3. Michelle Pfeiffer, Angelina Jolie – Maleficent 2: Mistress of Evil #RomaFF14

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Michelle Pfeiffer and Angelina Jolie, actresses of the film Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.

Angelina Jolie is back playing the evil and tender Maleficent, godmother to Aurora ( Elle Fanning) in Maleficent 2 -Mistress of Evil. This time she will have to meet her in-laws, prince Philip’s mother included, the not so good and empathetic Ingrith, played by Michelle Pfeiffer, newly addition to the cast of the first film. Alice Nella Città just hosted the european premiere of Maleficent 2 as its pre-opening and Angelina Jolie and Michelle Pfeiffer have introduced the film to the young audience both in the morning in a masterclass and in the evening on a black and white carpet. After the morning screening of the film, the two actresses have commented on the revolution Disney is working on with films like Maleficent as it is now impossible to define who’s good from who’s bad as the grey areas are in everyone of us and that’s how we identify with the characters and care for them. Angelina Jolie and Michelle Pfeiffer comment on this very important aspect asone of the reasons that made them want to accept being part of the film in the first place. On the red carpet the two beautiful and strong women have then discussed on what it means to be strong in general and what strength is. The younger generations could be the answer to have those with visions of armony prevail over the ones who don’t recognize diversity as our most powerful weapon to evolve.

Maleficent 2 – Mistress of Evil: Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is a fantasy adventure that picks up several years after “Maleficent,” in which audiences learned of the events that hardened the heart of Disney’s most notorious villain and drove her to curse a baby Princess Aurora. The film continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within. The film is directed by Joachim Rønning from a story by Linda Woolverton and a screenplay by Linda Woolverton and Micah Fitzerman-Blue & Noah Harpster, the film is produced by Joe Roth, Angelina Jolie and Duncan Henderson with Matt Smith, Jeff Kirschenbaum and Michael Vieira serving as executive producers.

            4. Anna Thommen, Lorenz Nufer – Volunteer #ZFF2019

PODCAST | Nicolò Comotti interviews Anna Thommen and Lorenz Nufer, directors of the film Volunteer.

How does one deal with the tension between experiencing such suffering and the deceptive peace back home? Volunteer portrays a very personal view of different people who have dared to leave their comfort zone in Switzerland, and explores what happens when they are confronted with and try to help people in need.

Volunteer: A frequent topic of discussion, the humanitarian tradition of Switzerland frequently degenerates into hollow phrases. But there are a few people here and there who prove it to have actual substance. One example is Michael Räber, who, following the fall out over the wave of refugees across the Mediterranean, founded a relief project and set out with a few colleagues to the “migration front” in Greece. Together, the volunteers assumed responsibility when nobody else wanted to. What they experienced on the beach and in the camps changed their lives forever.

            5. Ang Lee – Gemini Man

PODCAST | Matteo Ghidoni interviews Ang Lee, director of the film Gemini Man.

Interview with the two times Oscar winner And ee about his new movie gemini Man, an innovative 3D feature with Will Smith and Clive Owen. “This is going to be a new 3D experience for the audience – said Lee – I like to learn and work on the edge of technology, new challenges keeps me fresh”. “I am very thankful that they allow me to explore digital film making, I probably like more the making of it than the actual movie. Think it is important to keep progressing the media, so I like to embrace that. 3D is a new thing, we also tried 6D but technologies are not ready yet”.

Gemini Man: Henry Brogan, an aging government assassin, is sent on a mission to assassinate an anonymous terrorist aboard a silver-bullet train. During the mission, Henry’s spotter warns him of a young girl approaching the target, causing Henry to delay his shot until the last second, shooting the man in the neck despite aiming for his head. Disillusioned with killing, Henry retires from his career. While settling down with his retirement, Henry meets boat rental manager Danny and reconnects with an old friend, who reveals that an informant named Yuri told him that the man Henry killed was innocent; demanding proof, Henry has his friend arrange a meeting with Yuri. In retaliation for Henry knowing their deception, his former agency plans to kill him while Clay Varris, head of a top-secret black ops unit codenamed “GEMINI”, wants to go after Henry but is denied the request. Realizing Danny is a fellow agent, Henry befriends her. After his home is broken into by government agents, Henry calls his spotter, who is killed along with Henry’s friend. Henry warns Danny about the attack and they manage to kill the assassins sent after them, learning the agency wants them dead. Escaping east, Henry and Danny go abroad to the home of Henry’s former colleague Baron, and plan to meet with Yuri for further options. Meanwhile, Clay dispatches his top assassin to kill Henry. Fighting him off, Henry realizes the assassin bears an uncanny resemblance to himself as a young man, with a similar skillset. After a motorbike chase, Henry is outmatched and almost killed by the faster and more ferocious operative, until authorities arrive on the scene and the younger assassin flees. When the assassin arrives at a safehouse, he is revealed to be Clays’s adopted “son” Junior. Curious about his similarities to Henry, Junior is ordered to finish the job. Henry is also troubled by his similarities to the assassin, whom Danny suggests might be his child, though Henry claims he isn’t married. Testing DNA samples recovered from Junior, Danny discovers that his and Henry’s DNA are identical – Junior is Henry’s younger clone. Desperate for answers, Henry meets Yuri, who informs him of the cloning project and that the man Henry killed was one of the project’s scientists. Having designed a method to produce clones devoid of pain or emotion, the scientist tried to leave the project and was killed upon being discovered. To try and get Junior to turn away from Clay’s intentions, Henry calls the head of his former agency, who agrees to send Junior to bring Danny safely back to the United States. Collecting Danny, Junior sets up a trap for Henry, but Danny warns Henry via a covert listening device in her mouth. Ambushing the younger assassin, Henry explains to Junior that he is a clone, convincing him by revealing their similar secret traits no one else could know. Escaping back to GEMINI, a heartbroken Junior confronts Clay, who claims that he is better than Henry and is still Clay’s son. Finding Henry after sneaking out of GEMINI, Junior allies with him to bring down Clay with Henry urging Junior to quit in order to become someone better. Baron is killed in a drone strike ordered by Clay with Junior ambushing him, knocking Clay unconscious. After defeating a wave of GEMINI operatives, Henry, Danny, and Junior face another clone who feels no pain or emotions, managing to kill him. A defeated Clay tries to justify his actions towards Junior, who almost kills him, but Henry persuades Junior otherwise. Ensuring there are no more clones produced and that they are finally free from harms way, Henry later meets with Junior, who has enrolled into college under a new identity. Junior has taken the name “Jackson Brogan” after Henry’s maiden name, with him, Henry, and Danny planning Jackson’s future.

            7. Tania Cypriano – Born to Be #NYFF2019
              1. PODCAST | Samantha Sartori interviews Tania Cypriano, director of the film Born to Be.
              2. We meet Tania Cypriano soon after the world premier of Born to Be at the 57th New York Film Festival. We talk about the making of Born to Be, how she chose the stories to add in the movie and the amazing reaction of the audience with a standing ovation for the movie and to welcome the protagonists of this remarkable documentary which we all hope will inspire new generations of medical students. Dr. Ting is a gifted musician, he was a student at The Juilliard School but he started medical school to honor the expectations of his family. He was a brilliant medical student, first in his class, a surgeon who decided to dedicate his life to help people to be who they are. He is a pioneer and he started the first Fellowship Program in the United States in Transgender Medicine and Surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. “Not every patient wants to have a surgical transition. Transition can take many forms. You might just change your hair color, your makeup, the way you dress, your name, your gender marker. You don’t have to have surgery. I see a subset of the transgender population. Only those patients who desire transitional surgery.” – Dr. Ting.

Born to Be: Soon after New York state passed a 2015 law that health insurance should cover transgender-related care and services, director Tania Cypriano and producer Michelle Hayashi began bringing their cameras behind the scenes at New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital, where this remarkable documentary captures the emotional and physical journey of surgical transitioning. Lending equal narrative weight to the experiences of the center’s groundbreaking surgeon Dr. Jess Ting and those of his diverse group of patients, Born to Be perfectly balances compassionate personal storytelling and fly-on-the-wall vérité. It’s a film of astonishing access—most importantly into the lives, joys, and fears of the people at its center.
