PODCAST | Nicolò Comotti interviews Anastasia Mikova and Yann Arthus-Bertrand, directors of the film Woman.
Directors Anastasia Mikova and Yann Arthus-Bertrand talk about their latest work together Woman, having its official premiere here in Venezia 76. Based on first-person encounters, the project deals with topics such as motherhood, education, marriage or financial independence but also menstruations or sexuality. The public discovers the voices of women as you have never heard them before.
Woman is a worldwide project giving a voice to 2000 women across 50 different countries. Despite its very large scale, the film offers an intimate portrait of those who constitute half of the humanity. It is an opportunity to shed light on the injustices women are subjected to all over the world, but what the film would like to underline most is the inner strength of women and their capacity to change the world despite all the difficulties they are facing.

PODCAST | David Martos interviews Olivier Assayas, director of the film Wasp Network.
Olivier Assayas talks to FRED about how he convinced the Cuban government to allow the shooting in the island and how he worked with the actors in order to get a regular Cuban accent from them.
Wasp Network is the story of five Cuban political prisoners who had been imprisoned by the United States since the late 1990s on charges of espionage and murder. Penélope Cruz and Edgar Ramírez, as leading actors, play a couple separated by exile, although a very different motive is revealed throughout the film.

The Great Green Wall: The Collider is an immersive virtual and theatrical experience exploring power and dependency. The viewer is invited to enter a machine built to decode the mysteries of human relationships. It operates like the Large Hadron Collider, except instead of atoms, it hurls people against each other. Its mission: to identify and understand the invisible material that passes between people—the corrosive, delightful, and mysterious matter that keeps us together and pulls us apart. PODCAST | Matt Micucci interviews Yonfan, director of the film No. 7 Cherry Lane.
Yonfan presented his latest film, No. 7 Cherry Lane, in the main competition of the 2019 Venice International Film Festival. This film also feels historic because it is the first Hong Kong production to compete for the main prize at the Venice festival in nearly a decade, the first film directed by Yonfan in about a decade and his first work of animation – though he likes to define it a “motion picture,” and he tells us why here. Also in this interview, the director talks about the sexuality expressed in this movie and what it is that makes it a love letter to Hong Kong and cinema.
No. 7 Cherry Lane: During the rise of the materialistic comfort of life in the 1960s, there emerges an undercurrent of danger in Hong Kong. Ji yuan tai qi hao tells the tale of Ziming, a Hong Kong University undergraduate, entangled between his amorous feelings for Mrs Yu, a self-exiled mother from Taiwan in the White Terror period, and her beautiful daughter Meiling. He takes them to different movies and through a series of magical moments on the big screen, forbidden passions are revealed. The era coincides with Hong Kong’s turbulent times of 1967.

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Shannon Murphy, director of the film Babyteeth.
Shannon Murphy is one of the two women directors competing for the Golden Lion at the 76th Venice International Film Festival. Her debut film Babyteeth is a perfect mix between a coming of age story, a love story and a family one. Milla (Eliza Scanlen) is a teenager, she’s ill and could die. She has two soundly imperfect parents who constantly try to face their fear. She still has a babyteeth but her adolescence is kicking and screaming inside of her only to finally explode when she meets Moses (Toby Wallace), wild, impulsive, addicted to life, medicine and drugs. Moses is a breath of real life for Milla and rapidly becomes the only chance at living love before it’s too late. Shannon Murphy takes nothing for granted and explains how she keeps the balance between irony and drama, life and death from the beginning till the end. Colors, music and editing are in sync with Milla’s path.
Babyteeth: When seriously ill teenager Milla Finlay falls in love with smalltime drug dealer Moses, it’s her parents’ worst nightmare. But as Milla’s first brush with love brings her a new lust for life, things get messy and traditional morals go out the window. Milla shows everyone in her orbit—her parents, Moses, a sensitive music teacher, a budding child violinist, and a disarmingly honest pregnant neighbor—how to live like you have nothing to lose. What might have been a disaster for the Finlay family instead leads to letting go and finding grace in the glorious chaos of life. Babyteeth joyously explores how good it is not to be dead and how far we will go for love.
