Selma Vilhunen is the winner of the Camera d’Oro Taodue at the 14th edition of Alice nella Città with her second feature Little Wing. The jury was chaired by Matt Dillon and composed, among others, by italian directors Gabriele Mainetti and Claudio Giovannesi and italian actress Anna Foglietta. Varpu lives with her mother and has never met her father. One night Varpu has enough of her riding buddies and her mother. She steals a car and drives up north in search of her father, of whom she only knows the name. But her father is not exactly what she had expected. Meeting him triggers something in Varpu and Siru’s life, making them realize their role in each other’s lives, and in the world.

FRED’s Chiara Nicoletti meets Clive Oppenheimer, volcanologist and friend of Werner Herzog, director of Into the Inferno, screening at the 11th Edition of Rome Film Festival in its official selection. • Kenneth Lonergan – Manchester by the Sea #RomaFF11

FRED’s Chiara Nicoletti meets Kenneth Lonergan, director of Manchester by the Sea, starring Casey Affleck, Kyle Chandler and Michelle Williams. As in his previous films, Lonergan tries to analyze how loss can or can’t be processed and how people deal with it and live through it. Casey Affleck delivers his most extraordinary performance and Lonergan describes in details one of the most cathartic and intense scenes of the film.

MANCHESTER BY THE SEA. In Manchester by the Sea, the latest film from award-winning writer and director Kenneth Lonergan, the life of a solitary Boston janitor is transformed when he returns to his hometown to take care of his teenage nephew. The story of the Chandlers, a working-class family living in a Massachusetts fishing village for generations, Manchester by the Sea is a deeply poignant, unexpectedly funny exploration of the power of familial love, community, sacrifice and hope. After the death of his older brother Joe (Kyle Chandler), Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is shocked to learn that Joe has made him sole guardian of his nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges). Taking leave of his job, Lee reluctantly returns to Manchester-by-the-Sea to care for Patrick, a spirited 16-year-old, and is forced to deal with a past that separated him from his wife Randi (Michelle Williams) and the community where he was born and raised. Bonded by the man who held their family together, Lee and Patrick struggle to adjust to a world without him.

  • Mick Jackson – Denial #RomaFF11

PODCAST | Chiara Nicoletti interviews Mick Jackson, director of Denial, from the 11th Rome International Film Festival.

FRED’s Chiara Nicoletti meets Mick Jackson, at the 11th Rome International Film Festival to introduce his new film Denial, based on the book Denial: Holocaust History on Trial written by Deborah Lipstadt.

The film portrays the legal battle that Lipstadt was involved in against David Irving, who accused her of libel when she declared him a Holocaust denier. Mick Jackson declares the uiversal importance of making films like this one as by talking about this very important and serious happening the discussion can lead to politics activity in denying unchallengeable truths.

DENIAL. An American professor finds herself the defendant in a high-profile British libel trial that would impact the way the history of the Holocaust is told in Denial, a taut courtroom drama based on one of the most significant international legal cases in recent memory. After historian Deborah Lipstadt’s (Rachel Weisz) book Denying the Holocaust: The Growing Assault on Truth and Memory is published in the U.K., she is shocked to learn that British author David Irving (Timothy Spall), a prolific writer of texts on World War II, is suing her for libel. Even more surprising to the American academic, under U.K. libel laws she is presumed guilty unless she can prove herself innocent. Lipstadt finds herself in the position of not only defending herself, but establishing beyond a doubt that the Holocaust took place.

Passionate, fiery and independent, Lipstadt refuses to settle the case and demands her day in court. With the cards solidly stacked against her, Lipstadt’s British legal team, led by solicitor Anthony Julius (Andrew Scott) and barrister Richard Rampton (Tom Wilkinson), presents her with a confounding strategy: neither she nor any Holocaust survivors will be called to the stand.

A powerful story about one woman’s relentless efforts to establish justice and remind the world about the tragedies of the Holocaust, Denial is a gripping, inspirational real-life account based on Lipstadt’s book Denial: Holocaust History on Trial (previously published as History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier).

  • Marisella Rossetti – LUX Prize #LuxPrize

PODCAST | Bénédicte Prot interviews Marisella Rossetti, Directorate-General for Communication of the LUX Prize.

Marisella Rossetti, in charge of the LUX Prize of the European Parliament, rejoices at the incredible success of this now 10-year-old initiative, which first started inside that institution on a strong premise – that of translating European films in all the languages of the Union to allow for a shared experience likely to strike a dialogue and enrich public debate – and was therefore able to spread its wings far beyond and reach out to a vast public of all ages, everywhere in Europe, through its presence at festivals and other dynamic events, such as the LUX Film Days.

The 10th anniversary celebration of the LUX Prize, held at the European Parliament on October 10, was conceived as a perfect illustration of the fantastic journey of the Prize and of its exciting achievements, with a keynote speech from the British maestro Ken Loach, a roundtable also involving past participants Céline Sciamma and Andrea Segre, the opening of the exhibition “10 years, 100 films”, and an evening Europe-wide simultaneous screening of Mustang (LUX Prize winner 2015) culminating in a live Internet Q&A between the director and all the viewers all across the continent.
