Welcome back to another episode of Free Ideas! In todays chat I'll be speaking with Dr. Stacy Berman who specializes in the field of psychoneuroimmunology. Psychoneuroimmunology is the term used to describe the interactions between the emotional state, ones psychological processes, nervous system function, and the immune system. Investigations into these interactions have documented that the mind and attitude play a significant role in the functioning of the immune system.

I find this field to be a fascinating topic of study and personally for me, it has come more into focus in recent years as we have watched certain narratives dominate mainstream thought around health and disease in ways that may not actually benefit those who take such claims as absolute truth. Stacy Berman is a super bright and warm hearted human who is truly a joy to speak with and definitely has a profound light to shed on these topics, which you'll hear in this episode. I'm stoked to be releasing this episode now as its an anniversary to last year when Dreamer, myself and a group pf close friends were camping in the same zone Im camping in now along with many of the same soul family. Unfortunately Dreamer and Amara couldn't make it down south where we are this time due to their extra busy school season and of course tending to their fresh baby boy, Augustine. Dreamer and myself are both new fathers as of 2022 and so the first hour or so of this convo is us sharing stories around our early initiation into fatherhood. This chat was recorded in February 2023 and I was surprised to see that it ended up being over 3 hours long but seemed to fly by when we originally spoke. This episode marks another merger between my show and my partner Diona's "you've been spending time" podcast. This is one of my all time favorite episodes and I'm beyond stoked to share it with you here. "Bim Seegers first sailed to Costa Rica on a boat in 1974. He returned with Bobbie and their children in 1999 so the kids could learn to surf in the warm water.

In 2006 they bought a 30 acre hill near Tamarindo with some family and friends. That's when the idea for building a community of homes and a small boutique resort for people who want a healthier, simpler lifestyle began.

Today's guest is my friend the mystical, highly intelligent, warm hearted, teacher of magical medicine traditions, Roman Hannis. Roman along with his wife Cynthia are the founders of the Paititi Institute, which is a transformational healing center and traditional medicine retreat organization based primarily in the mapacho valley as well as sacred valley of Peru. In 2014 I myself attended a month long plant medicine immersion with the Paititi institute at their previous center, which was an hour or so outside of Iquitos, in the Amazon rainforest. To say the least it was one of the most profoundly transformational experiences of my life, the stories of which Im sure will make their appearance on an episode here and there in the future, after that initial month in the jungle, much of the group had become so close during the retreat, a group of maybe 9 or so of us, including Roman and Cynthia met up and spent another month adventuring through the Sacred Valley and other blessed and powerful lands in the Peruvian Andes. Those experiences are burned brightly into my heart and so today I am very grateful to have a key facilitator of many of those journeys, Roman Hanis, on the show to share his story and what brought him to the Amazon in the summer of 2001, we discuss his personal healing journey and the processes and patterns of awakening to spirit, indigenous wisdom, the evolution of consciousness, reflections on fatherhood and so much more. In this episode I speak with my friend, Scott Berman who is one of the co-creators along with his wife Jill, of the Sky Cave Dark Room Retreat Center in southern Oregon. The sky cave is a solo style darkness retreat which is where participants are immersed in total darkness for the duration of their stay. Though everyone's time in the darkroom is unique there's a common pattern of people reporting profoundly transformational experiences, deep emotional releases and a powerful sense of love and expanded awareness.
