That lick is using the same notes that form a very popular blues turnaround. And in this lesson I’ll show you how to play it, and how to find the same corresponding notes in any other key.

In this first lesson I’ll demonstrate the importance of retaining the “swing” feel in your rhythm when playing this style, especially as the tempo gets faster.

This is a little challenging because we have to use our pinky in a way most of us aren’t used to, but with a little practice you’ll get it. It becomes progressively harder the further down the fretboard you do it, so start high, and work on moving it down as you get it.

I discovered this gem while listening to an early bootleg recording of SRV from a performance at Fitzgerald’s club in Houston on 8.22.80. This comes from a medley of songs that included Collins Shuffle. In the middle of that song, he repeats the same lick over an entire 12-bar chorus. It mixes single notes and chords, with lots of vibrato on each.

Ever since the John Mayer Trio album Try! was released in 2005, the song Gravity has been a favorite of his guitar playing fans. Studio recordings of the song featured impossibly delicate soft playing, and his live performances added in some amazing fireworks.
