5. Born of God to Have the Divine Life and Nature

We have seen that the divine nature denotes what God is, that is, the constituents of God’s being. Because we are children of God born of Him, we possess God’s life and also His nature for our enjoyment.

B. SPIRIT, LOVE, AND LIGHT

What is God’s nature? According to the New Testament God is Spirit (John 4:24), love (1 John 4:8, 16), and light (1 John 1:5). The expressions, “God is Spirit,” “God is love,” and “God is light,” are not used in a metaphoric/symbolic sense, but in a predicative sense. These expressions denote and describe the nature of God.

In His nature God is Spirit, love, and light. Spirit denotes the nature of God’s person; love, the nature of God’s essence/heart or core; and light, the nature of God’s expression. Both love and light are related to God as life, which life is of the Spirit (Rom. 8:2). God, Spirit, and life are actually one. God is Spirit, and Spirit is life. Within such a life are love and light. When this divine love appears to us, it becomes grace, and when this divine light shines upon us, it becomes truth.

C. GOD’S NATURE BEING DISPENSED INTO US FOR OUR LIVING IN SPIRIT, LOVE, AND LIGHT

According to His New Testament economy, God is now dispensing Himself into us. Surely what God dispenses into us is what He is in His nature. When God is dispensed into us, His nature is also dispensed into us. For God to dispense Himself into us means that He is dispensing Himself into us with what He is in His nature.

Because God is love as well as Spirit, the more we are under His dispensing, the more love we have. Actually, the more God’s nature is dispensed into us, the more we become love. This means that we not only have love but that we are love. When the New Testament says that God is love, this does not mean that God merely has love but that He is love. Through God’s dispensing of Himself into us, we become love in the sense of being constituted of God as love. When love as the nature of God’s essence is dispensed into us, we shall react to others in love. Only one kind of love is genuine, and that is the love that comes out of God’s dispensing. When we are under God’s dispensing, we react with genuine love, which is God Himself

A Cycle of Escaping and Partaking

In 2 Peter 1:4 there is a condition for becoming partakers of the divine nature: It is “having escaped the corruption which is in the world by lust.” The more we escape this corruption, the more we shall enjoy the nature of God. Likewise, the more we partake of the divine nature, the more we shall escape the corruption that is in the world by lust.

A Continual Enjoyment

To have eternal life is a matter once for all, but to partake of the divine nature is a continual matter. Although we have the divine life once for all, we cannot enjoy the divine nature once for all.

GOD—HIS NATURE

In the foregoing messages we covered many aspects of God’s person. In this message we shall go on to consider God’s nature.

A. PARTAKERS OF THE DIVINE NATURE

According to the New Testament, that the believers have God’s nature. Perhaps some may not be familiar with 2 Peter 1:4, a verse that tells us that we are partakers of the divine nature. To partake of God’s nature is to enjoy it and to participate in it. We can testify that day by day we not only possess the divine nature but also enjoy it. As believers, we certainly have the divine nature within us. Certain sufferings and hardships we cannot bear by ourselves; however, we are able to bear them by the divine nature.

We need to pay close attention to the matter of being partakers of the divine nature.

B. IN PARABLES AND SIGNS

1. The Householder in the Parable of the Evil Husbandmen

The person of God is also revealed in the parables of the New Testament. In the parable of the evil husbandman (Matt. 21:33-46) God is the Householder.

2. The King in the Parable of the Marriage Feast

God is the King in the parable of the marriage feast (Matt. 22:1-14).

3. The Friend in the Parable of Persisting Prayer

Luke 11:5-8 speaks of a parable illustrating the persisting prayer. In this parable God to whom we pray is likened to our friend, and we are likened to His friend,

4. The Lord in the Parable of the Unfruitful Fig Tree

In Luke 13:6-9 we have the parable of the unfruitful fig tree.

6. The Loving and Receiving Father in the Parable of the Prodigal Son

In the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32) God is revealed as the loving and receiving father

7. The Unrighteous Judge in the Parable of Persisting Prayer

In the parable concerning persisting prayer

8. A Jasper Stone and a Sardius

This item and the next two are all figures in the book of Revelation to portray what God is. In the book of Revelation God makes His revelation known to us “by signs”

Revelation 21:22 indicates that God is the temple in the New Jerusalem:

In Revelation 21:23 we see that God is the light in the New Jerusalem

The Almighty

A number of verses tell us that God is the almighty One (Rev. 1:8; 4:8; 19:6, 15; 2 Cor. 6:18). The Only True God

In John 17:3 the Lord Jesus addresses the Father as “the only true God.” This indicates that only God is the reality, the truth. Anything that is without Him is not true, not a reality. The Only Sovereign

In 1 Timothy 6:15 Paul, when he was under Caesar’s rule, tells us that God is the only Sovereign, indicating that God is the only Ruler, the only Emperor, who has the most absolute and the highest authority and power. The Sovereign Lord, Holy and True

In Revelation 6:10 the martyred saints called God the “sovereign Lord, holy and true.” The Greek word for “sovereign Lord” is despotes, denoting a slave’s master who has absolute sovereign power over the slave, as in Acts 4:24; Luke 2:29; Jude 4; 1 Timothy 6:1-2. The King of the Ages

In 1 Timothy 1:17 Paul speaks of God as the King of the ages. Here “ages” actually means eternity. This word needs to be understood in relation to the decline of the church.

The King of Kings and the Lord of Lords

In 1 Timothy 6:15 Paul also tells us that God is “the King of those who reign as kings and Lord of those who rule as lords,” indicating that God is the highest Authority in the entire universe.

In 1 Timothy 3:15 we see that the church, the house of God, is the church of the living God. In speaking of the church as the house of God, Paul specifically refers to God as the living God. The living God who lives in the church must be subjective to the church rather than merely objective. An idol in a heathen temple is lifeless. The God who not only lives but also acts, moves, and works in His living temple, the church, is living. Because God is living, the church is also living in Him, by Him, and with Him. A living God and a living church live, move, and work together. The living church is the house and the household of the living God.

In 1 Timothy 3:15 Paul refers not merely to God but to the living God. God is living, and now He lives, dwells, moves, and works in the church. Therefore, the church is the church of the living God.
