Freelance Radio Producer, Presenter and Actor David Brain talks about his varied career, the importance of networking and keeping an open mind.  I caught up with David at our former University, Leeds Trinity where David was due to give a talk to current students.

After we finished recording the first episode of the podcast, Chris mentioned that he had a long list of people who would make great guests. Not only that, he had been exploring the idea of podcasting as part of his Human Freelancer project. Never one to miss an opportunity for some outsourcing I told Chris I’d love to feature any of the guests he had in mind. So this week Chris Kenworthy chats with Gary and Kirk, the founders of Dirty Rotten comics, a British comics anthology with a diverse and inclusive publishing philosophy.

Mark Newton is a Yorkshire based wedding and commercial photography who specialises in shooting cool couples and even cooler beers. In this episode he talks about moving on from a career as a graphic designer to build his photography business. He shares his experience of using his passion for craft beer to create personal projects which have ultimately led to paid work.

This week’s episode was inspired by a post in our Facebook group, started by Natasha. She shared a link to the forthcoming business banking app, Coconut and it started a great discussion about online accounting software and book keeping in general. So for this episode I spoke to accountant Jonathan Ford about the best ways to do your bookkeeping and also contacted Sam O’Connor, the co-founder and CEO of Coconut to find out more about the app. We also features a preview of next week’s episode featuring Graphic Designer Robbie May, discussing his career and the Laces Out trainer festival that he created. Jamie Sia was enjoying a successful career in IT when redundancy led him to think again about his work. With just 6 months to make it work, he set out on a journey to build his photography business balancing his ambitions with the needs of his young family. In 2017, with a growing business and two young children, he realised that he needed to move the business out of the home. Unable to find a suitable space he joined forces with fellow photographer Tim Dunk to set up The Light Space Collective: Leeds.
