Punjabi-American sitar player, songwriter and ambient musician Ami Dang constructs speculative and searing soundscapes, uniting the disparate worlds of Indian classical music and dreamy synth-infused song composition. Her dreamlike work references her hybrid identity as a first-generation South Asian-American, Sikh upbringing, musical education, as well as the chaos and spirituality of the landscapes of both Baltimore and urban India.
Following the release of her acclaimed 2019 full-length album, Parted Plains, a few scattered EP's as well as collaborations and tours with the likes of Animal Collective, Beach House and black midi, Ami chats with boxout.fm's Rounak Maiti for another insightful episode of Fresh Out The Box. They talk about her musical upbringing, her unique process of combining Indian traditional music with electronic experimentation, the often problematic categorization of her music, and much more.
Ami Dang's new album 'The Living World's Demands' is out on November 4 via Leaving Records and Phantom Limb.

This episode of Fresh Out The Box features Aakash Mehta, a renowned comedian with a loyal following across his extensive work, including stand-up, podcasts, writing, and producing. Unbeknown to many, he is also a singer-songwriter and is releasing his debut record What a Life on 31st January 2022. Produced by Shashwat Bulusu (signed to Indie Label Pagal Haina), the record offers an intimacy and vulnerability different from Aakash's other work. Acting as a journal, it's a testimony to stories that get lost in the babble of modernity. A homage to feelings we barely get to tap into because, more often than not, life comes in the way.
Join Aakash Mehta in conversation w/ Shashwat Bulusu as they take a deep dive into the process of making this record.
Join Rounak Maiti in conversation with Dutch & Indian artists Heiko Dijker, Sharat Chandra Srivastava, Fateh Ali Khan, Maya Fridman and M V Chandrashekar, as they dive into the makings of “Connecting Pathways”: a unique Indo-Dutch Musical Collaboration that harmonises Western and Hindustani classical disciplines into a new, shared form of musical expression.
This episode of Fresh Out The Box features The F16s, a Chennai based alternative band who describe themselves as 'a pop band disguised in a rock and roll outfit’. Catchy pop vocals with grooving bass lines, synthetic keys and some upbeat drums. ‘Its hard to articulate the identity of a soul but we know it’s there.’ they tell me.
Join them in conversation w/ Param (Tour Manager) as they talk about their new EP Is It Time to Eat the Rich Yet?
