When you heard about Trump’s Project 2025 & DOGE gutting of federal agencies and programs, did the impact of those whacks on your own daily life or your community’s health hit you right away? For many of us, those huge numbers are a little abstract and can sometimes make our eyes glaze over. When you start to break it all down and really look at where things are going, especially with the Hefty Horrible Bill moving through Congress, it becomes clear really fast that we are in a certain very well-known handbasket that we’ve got to get out of.
Who has time to break it all down, though? Luckily, for the past several months, an all-volunteer group of people from across ideological and geographic spectrums have come together to do that for you. It’s called The Poster Project, and it’s a catalog of free infographics showing the disastrous impact of this slash ‘n’ burn on every state and territory, plus tools to help you tell the stories that need telling with those graphics.
Full disclosure, I’m part of this effort, and what we’re trying to achieve here is not just to get the information out, but to also help people connect the dots and feel confident in being able to do things like write a letter to the editor, or to call in to shows on their local radio stations to talk about the cuts in real, human ways. We know that statistics don’t change minds, but stories do; we also know that legislators at every level care a lot about what their local media are saying about them.
To that end, in addition to the state-by-state graphics, there are also links to tools that can help write that letter to the editor, and that will give you some straightforward talking points for calling into those radio shows. Your story can help change the public perception of how government investment in our country’s well-being benefits them and their communities! For example, not many people know how dependent our hospitals, especially rural hospitals, are on Medicaid payments. They think, “Well, I’m not on Medicaid, so I don’t have to worry about that.” But no! If Medicaid gets slashed, hospitals and health centers who already operate in the red will close entirely.
