This week we chat with Mitchell Smolkin, a psychotherapist, author and speaker who promotes the idea of finding dignity in your suffering in order to become closer to others and yourself. His grandfather lost his whole family to the Nazis in WWII while he was away in the war and then later suffered through the pain of immigration. Mitchell tells his grandfather's struggle through both the lens of a psychotherapist and the teenager that initially confronted the issues of their family's tragic history. This conversation gets deep as we delve into inter-generational trauma, existential crises, and dying multiple deaths. Truly a meaningful message throughout with many gems on life and failure. Her skills learned as an actress, teacher, and psychotherapist prepared her for the task of documenting her father's life as a WWII B-24 navigator. Yvonne's book 'Flying with Dad' tells the story of strengthening a father-daughter bond through getting her father to share stories he had never previously spoke about surrounding his years in the war. The stories shared in this episode range from shocking but funny differences in how things used to be to timeless lessons on intimacy, relationships, and death.
