The new Boston Celtics docuseries "Celtics City" is upon us, but what is it, and why is it like nothing that has come before? With nearly eight decades of history filled with more NBA titles (18, in fact) than any other club in league history and more regular season wins than any other team, it's safe to say that any documentary series attempting to encompass the history of the Celtics is taking on a massive task.
And that is before we take into account the complex, and often fraught, history of the storied franchise, which was at the forefront of racial integration as a team in the late 1950s and early 1960s at the same time the city they played in was anything but that -- and we haven't even touched on the larger-than-life figures behind their dynastic success, or the rivalries they flourished in.
This is the task of the creative minds behind the "Celtics City" documentary brought to us by HBO Sports Documentaries, Ringer Films, and Words + Pictures. The folks behind the CLNS Media "Celtics Lab" podcast got to sit down with the director, Lauren Stowell, and co-executive producer and showrunner Gabe Honig to talk about all aspects of the new docuseries, from what sets it apart to how it came together, and everything in between.
Don't miss this conversation on all things "Celtics City" ahead of the debut of the first installment of the nine-part series debuting on Monday, March 3 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and Max.
