"I think anybody who sits there and says, 'Samantha, would you like an extra two years at your job where you don’t have to worry about anything?’ I’d say `Yeah, that sounds great. Sign me up,’’’ Burnett said.

"I think it’s great they want to extend their job and continue to serve the city for another two years. But do it for the will of the people. And if the will of the people in 2016 was a two-year term, that’s what people voted on.

“So why not just go ahead and run again in 2018, and if you win, you get a four-year term then?”

Ricardo Mourato, a sergeant and 18-year veteran of the Bristol Police Department who lives in Riverside and plans to run for the Ward 4 seat held by Faria. Mourato was Faria’s correctional officer at the Wyatt Detention Center in Central Falls in 1998 while he was serving his federal sentence on drug charges.

"I’m not good with names, but I don’t forget faces,’’ Mourato said, adding that he remembered Faria, who was 25 at the time, as someone who "pushed the envelope to the edge, then backed off’’ in prison.

April 19, 2018 East Providence Councilman says, "It was an effort to steal the vote from the people."
Botelho maintains that because the city has a home-rule charter it does not need legislative approval to amend its charter and has the right to implement the 2012 change now.
"A rightly elected charter amendment voted on by the people is misdirected to the General Assembly for approval, then surreptitiously killed … what does it look like to you?’’ Botelho said. "It was an effort to really steal a vote from the people.’’

Often criticized for bringing his voice into the political arena, Diocese of Providence Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas J. Tobin says he is compelled by his faith to speak on issues of morality. He has found a new means of involvement. In February, he opened a Twitter account, where, in two months he has amassed 1,300+ followers. Unlike his Facebook account, which is managed by someone in his office, Tobin posts on his own to @bishoptjt “I thought, if the president can do it and the pope can do it, there’s no reason why I shouldn’t be doing it,” the bishop said. “So, yeah, hold your breath and say a prayer for my prudence!”

April 12, 2018 "Rhode Island school buildings are not equipped to train young people," says General Treasurer Seth Magaziner
"Rhode Island's school buildings are not equipped to train young people for the jobs of the 21st century," said state Treasurer Seth Magaziner. "Our science labs are Exhibit A."
Gov. Gina Raimondo's proposal to spend $500 million over the next 10 years would give school districts bonus points — a 5-percent boost in reimbursement — to correct these serious deficiencies, the product of generations of neglect by local cities and towns and years of under-funding by the state.
From his perspective as the state's general treasurer, Magaziner sees peril in Rhode Island's diminished ability to provide meaningful science education in its public schools.
"This isn't just an urban problem," he said on Wednesday, the day after a subsidiary of Amgen announced plans for a $160-million advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing plant that could employ 300 in West Greenwich. "These conditions are barriers to delivering the training that students need to find jobs in the 21st century."

In David Upegui's science lab, one of three for more than 700 students, a gaping hole punctures the ceiling, the light is dim and the classroom tables are bolted to the floor. The one sink at the front of the classroom works — sometimes.
One day, a ceiling tile fell on the cage of the class rabbit, which survived.
Upegui does what he can — painting the walls, patching ceiling tiles and bringing materials from home — but he said it's never enough.
