If you have ever visited the Tomaquag Museum in Exeter -- and many people from Rhode Island and beyond have -- you can appreciate the preservation and celebration of Native American history, culture and art that is the mission of the center, founded in 1958 by Princess Red Wing, who was of Narragansett and Pokanoket-Wampanoag descent.

You also may appreciate the profound need for a new museum home.

And so it was with excitement that Lorén Spears, Tomaquag’s executive director, on Friday  announced plans for a new one, on 18 acres of rural land owned by the University of Rhode Island near the school’s Kingston main campus.

Butler Hospital child and adolescent psychiatrist Dr. Tammi-Marie Phillip discusses the mental health challenges many kids are facing in the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We've been seeing significant depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms a lot,” she said. “And a higher frequency of kids who are coming in because of suicide attempts -- and very serious suicide attempts… We've been seeing more irritability and aggression in the home. We've been seeing more psychosis as well.”
