King David's son, Absalom, launches a rebellion against his father. Even though he is the legitimate king, David is forced to flee for his life. Similarly, Jesus is the legitimate King over the world, but the whole world is in rebellion against his authority.

Absalom is on the run after killing his brother Amnon. David's commander, Joab, enlists a wise woman to present a legal case to David in order to leverage him into allowing Absalom to return. She is an example of Christ's intercession on our behalf.

2 Samuel chapter 13 is among the most disturbing stories in the Bible. The humiliation and desolation of Tamar is painful to read and yet it is in the Bible, so God wants us to glean from it. Certainly, there are moral lessons about lust to learn from the story, but most importantly is the character of Tamar. The wise Tamar is the only light in this dark story. She is a picture of Christ who was humiliated and left desolate by the cross.

In Mark 1, Jesus comes bringing the reign of God to earth. His teaching and healing give us a glimpse of the perfected world when he returns.

It is faith that saves, so the content of our faith is no small matter. When you know the end of the story,, it changes how you life the story. Resurrection means we need not fear death. Final judgment means our choices and actions matter. Damnation means we witness to and pray for those who don't know Christ. Eternal glory means we always have hope.

2 Samuel chapter 12 tells of the prophet Nathan rebuking David for taking Bathsheba and arranging for the death of her husband Uriah. David's story shifts from successes to troubles after this pivotal sin. It shows that while believers are saved by grace, sin still has its devastating consequences. Not only the infant son of David would die but the son of David Jesus Christ would pay for this sin. Yet David's response to Nathan's rebuke is not defensive or defiant as was David's predecessor, King Saul. David responds with humble repentance, knowing God is merciful yet accepting the consequences without grumbling.
