From the Street to the World: LUVA Gallery podcast takeover!

In this episode the LUVA team discuss the work of artist Naz Smouna, titled ‘Merged Reality’. Naz is finishing a BA Fine Art degree at Central Saint Martins and has spent the past months exploring systems of social control and surveillance through their practice. “More recently combining my research of consumerist mechanisms in public and private spheres, with the intrinsic relationship with digital technologies. Having spent most of the year confined to the house, my practice has fluctuated around different frames of perspective and reality existing within the billboard, the window and the screen.”

"In this episode we share and discuss the work of Lydia Poole, a contemporary artist from Yorkshire and a current DPS student at Central Saint Martins. For the past year Lydia has been a member of the LUVA Gallery team.

The video work discussed in the podcast, is described as ‘A four-part woven narrative of the conflict between mind and the sublime; the internal and the external. Referencing fictional tragedies and Romanticised fables of drownings to map volatile exchanges between bodies of water and our bodies (of water)’. This episode explores the work ‘Should we fish it out/casting the sea’ by LDVA members Zoe Horne and artist Imogen Lee. The piece was made during a DPS residency in Cyprus. “Zoe’s practice follows the leaky threshold of inside and outside. In this journey to the sea, the process of casting collages together the bodies of Zoe Horne, Imogen Lee and the sea. Excavating the casts from the sand reveals creatures which could function as architectural models, sea monsters or alien landscapes. We have been having fun exploring the potential of audio. Over the past few months, Luva radio has been formed; we’ve teamed up with UAL, DPS, Central saint martins to bring to you our very own podcast.

Framed as a crit, we explore each other’s work as well as discussing issues that artists are currently facing. i.e the impact that lockdown has had on practice. Different combinations of people are featured on the episodes so look forward to hearing ideas from a range of our artists and creatives.

'From the Street to the World' is a new series of podcasts from the DPS fine art programme at CSM. This first ever podcast, recorded in December 2017, explores the challenges of making the transition out of art school. We discuss recognising opportunities, negotation, & handling rejection. With Alex Schady, (Programme Leader, CSM), DPS student Ruben Green & DPS Pathway Leader for fine art Anne-Marie Creamer.
