It’s Christmas Eve 2018 at the picturesque Bluebell Lodge, a magnificent hunting lodge in the middle of a remote Scottish glen. Snow is falling and the wind is howling, Stefan, an 87-year-old man, is sitting in his armchair in the sitting room area by the roaring fire. It’s been a year since his wife passed away, and he’s feeling very lonely; the ghosts of his past keep coming back to haunt him. Suddenly, his adult daughter, Margot, enters with her husband, Teo, and their two children, Enzo and Rosa, who are bounding around in excitement. Since his wife’s passing, Stefan’s family have been the only thing that brings a smile to his face. Whilst his grandson, Enzo plays, he notices his grandfather is sad, but Stefan smiles reassuringly at him. Margot notices her father seems out of sorts, and asks if he is okay, to which Stefan responds that he is going for a lie down. He carefully walks up the stairs towards his room where he sits down on the bed, the room covered in picture frames from throughout his life. A portrait of his wife catches his eye, but as he picks it up, he accidentally drops it onto the floor. As he kneels on the floor and feels about under the bed for the frame, something catches his interest. Stefan pulls a box out, with the initials S.W.G. inscribed on it. Initially, he is hesitant to open it, though he decides he needs to face his past, either now or never. He opens the box, and within it lies a leather-bound journal, some black and white photographs, handwritten letters and a collection of war medals. He opens the journal and reads an inscription on the top of the first page from his ‘Papa’, voicing how proud and thankful he was to have Stefan in his life. This strikes a chord with him, and Stefan slams the journal shut. A tear unexpectedly rolls down his cheek. A photo falls from the journal pages into his hand; a smiley photo of Stefan as a young boy and his ‘Papa’. Despite the hard times they faced together, they still managed to smile. If it wasn’t for his Papa, and several others, Stefan wouldn’t be here today. He then tells us his story.
