Entrepreneur and gourmand Sam Bashiry has a laugh with friend and chef Adam D'Sylva
about growing up in multicultural Australia and how being terrible at school doesn't mean
you'll never be successful.
Melbourne-based Adam D'Sylva is a chef and restaurateur who heads up Coda, an Asian-
inspired tapas bar, and Tonka, a ghee-free Indian restaurant. Born to an Anglo-Indian father
and an Italian mother, Adam grew up in a multicultural family with a fusion of cuisines.
Despite "technically failing" at school, Adam worked his way from cleaning in his father's
butcher shop to becoming a kitchenhand at restaurants and hotels during his latter teen
years. He studied at TAFE and became Apprentice of the Year before training in Italy and
learning more about Asian cuisine. In 2007 he was named Young Chef of the Year.
Tune in to hear Sam and Adam talk about the hard work that goes into cooking and running
a restaurant for a living, how to teach kids the value of a dollar, and why you have to cook
for love, not fame. in Episode 8.
