This episode’s guest is Stephanie Vasquez, Chief Program Officer for AlamoPROMISE. You’ll also hear stories from current SAC students enrolled in AlamoPROMISE.

Dr. Naydeen talks with Stephanie about AlamoPROMISE. The program provides community college tuition to eligible students who plan to earn an associate degree, certification, courses for transfer or workforce training. AlamoPROMISE also provides last-dollar funding to fill the gap between a student’s financial aid award and the cost of tuition and mandatory fees for up to three years at one of the Alamo Colleges District’s five colleges. The AlamoPROMISE is powered by school districts, colleges and universities, employers, and community organizations that have united to support students in completing education beyond high school, launching their careers, and being included in the economic success of our region.

2. Complete your financial aid application through FAFSA or TASFA

3. Enroll in classes for Fall

Eligible graduates from the class of 2024 should submit their admission and financial aid applications by February 28, 2024 to be considered for AlamoPROMISE.

San Antonio College President, Dr. Naydeen González-De Jesús, talks with Hot Mustard about the SAC Regional Fire Academy.

This episode’s guest is Frank L. Poyner, Regional Fire Academy Director and Chief of the San Antonio College First Responders Academy.

Dr. Naydeen talks with Chief Poyner about the San Antonio College Fire Academy. Cadets learn and understand what it means to be a firefighter, what they represent as a firefighter, and how to be a professional leader in their department and most importantly their communities. They also discuss the opening of the new facility and how it will help the expansion of the program. Firefighters are in high demand.

This face-to-face hands-on program prepares and trains cadets for the hiring standards established by fire departments. The San Antonio College Regional Fire Academy is a quality fire training facility providing the most realistic live fire training possible.

Chief Poyner also shares tips on how to stay safe when cooking this Labor Day.

• Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.

• The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.

• Never leave your grill unattended.

• When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container.

This episode’s guest is Dr. Jacob-Aidan Martinez, Director of Student Success in the Office of Student Life.

The SAC Office of Student Life supports the academic mission of the college by engaging students in a variety of activities. They enhance the college experience by providing co-curricular opportunities that foster camaraderie, a sense of community and personal growth.

Dr. JAM talks about the role the Office of Student Life. OSL offers opportunities to students wanting to join eSports, student organizations, sports, community volunteerism, and more. OSL has a new eSports gaming room available to students looking to game. Clubs and organizations give students a chance to gain leadership skills and make friends with similar goals and interests.

This episode’s guest is Sabrina Macal-Polasek, Career Experience Team Leader at the San Antonio College Student Enrichment Center.

The San Antonio College Student Enrichment Center, located in the Moody Learning Center room 107, engages students and provides support through career services and experiential learning. The center provides programming, events, and fosters partnerships beneficial to SAC and SAC’s community partners.

Sabrina talks about the importance building skills that help students in the workplace. Dr. Naydeen offers tips, protocol, and etiquette for job interviews. Extracurricular activities are great but, students need to show to employers what skills they gained from their time with clubs, student organizations, and work-study opportunities. Sabrina also talks about the importance of seeking paid internships for students. The Student Enrichment Center offers resources for students seeking help with employment, paid internships, and experiential learning opportunities.

To meet the needs of changing times, the journalism program has merged with the radio/television/film department to offer a full range of employable skills that will prepare students for 21st century jobs in journalism and communications.

This episode’s guest is Jim Dalglish, San Antonio College Journalism Instructor and Coordinator.

This episode talks about the importance of Journalism and how well it transfers to different trades. Dr. Naydeen talks about her background in Broadcast Journalism. Jim discusses the future of the Journalism and what incoming students can expect.

Students can transfer to a university for completion of a bachelor’s degree or complete programming in two years or less to qualify for jobs available in the San Antonio and South Texas markets. In addition to traditional journalism classes in writing for media, interviewing, feature writing, editing, layout, and photography, students can also study audio/video skills such as video field production and audio editing. Furthermore, they can take courses to explore specialties in advertising and public relations.

San Antonio College President, Dr. Naydeen González-De Jesús, talks with Hot Mustard about the enrollment steps for the fall semester at San Antonio College Library. This episode is a walk-through guide of the entire enrollment process.

This episodes guest is Lenell Clay, San Antonio College Interim Director of Enrollment Services / Outreach and Recruitment. Lenell talks with Dr. Naydeen about each step of the enrollment process.

The first step is applying at Applytexas.org. The application process takes about three days. Students should receive an email and gain access to their ACES portal to submit transcripts and vaccination records. Students need to take the Texas Success Initiative Assessment exam. The exam is designed to place students in the necessary classes to make them successful. If students want a refresher, they have access to academic bootcamps in Math, English, and more. The next step is meeting with an advisor and register for classes. Students will then attend the New Student Orientation to learn about the resources available at SAC.

San Antonio College President, Dr. Naydeen González-De Jesús, talks with Hot Mustard about the San Antonio College Library. The SAC Library is utilizing technology to meet the needs of students and the community.

Guests include Lee LeBlanc, Director of Library Services, and Karen Briere, San Antonio College Librarian.

Lee talks about the technology currently being used in the SAC library including RFID tags, allowing students to use the self-checkout kiosks located throughout the library. A new book checkout kiosk is also going to be available for those not able to come to the library during operating hours. Users have a designated parking spot in front of the Moody Learning Center and can use the kiosk to pick up reserved materials.

Karen talks about the upcoming Fall 2023 Library Common Read. The Library Common Read invites students, staff, faculty and the community to come together for a conversation and share stories about the human experience. The book for the fall semester is The Moth Presents All These Wonders: True Stories about Facing the Unknown, a collection of stories about venturing into uncharted territory.

The court found that Harvard’s admissions process violates the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The decision removes race as a determining factor in college admissions.

San Antonio College President, Dr. Naydeen González-De Jesús, talks with Hot Mustard about the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), a nonprofit organization with a mission to promote Hispanic student success in higher education. HACU works with over 500 colleges and universities that are home to two-thirds of all Hispanic college students. They offer students leadership programs, internship opportunities, and career readiness programs.

Guests include Dr. Paul A. Machen II, Executive Director, Institute for Professional Leadership, Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, and Dr. Joan Jaimes, Director of Teaching and Learning & SAC Ascender Catch the Next, San Antonio College. Dr. Machen talks about HACU’s impact on Hispanic serving institutions. Dr. Jaimes talks about her work and experience with HACU’s La Academia de Liderazgo and the overall vision of leadership for Hispanic serving institutions.

HACU maintains more than 30 formal Memoranda of Understanding and Partnership Agreements with federal agencies, offices, and business organizations. HACU also hosts technical assistance workshops throughout the country on available federal program grants and other resources. The HACU National Internship Program also operates out of the Washington DC and places more than 450 student interns each year with corporations and federal agencies in Washington and field offices around the country.
