one i know that before the end of my harbory days i was already dreaming of a career of some great and conspicuous usefulness in the world that has always haunted my mind and haunts it now i may be cured perhaps of the large and showy anticipations of youth i may have learned to drop the great and conspicuous but still i find it necessary to believe that i matter that i play a part no one else can play in a progress in a universal scheme moving towards triumphant ends almost wholly i think i was dreaming of public service in those days the harboury tradition pointed steadfastly towards the state and all my world was bare of allurements to any other type of ambition success in art or literature did not appeal to us and a harboury boy would as soon think of being a great tinker as a great philosopher science we called stinks our three science fasters were ex-officio ridiculous and the practical laboratory a refuge for oddities but a good half of our fathers at least were peers or members of parliament and our sense of politics was close and keen history and particularly history as it came up through the 18th century to our own times supplied us with a gallery of intimate models our great uncles and grandfathers and ancestors at large figured abundantly in the story and furnished the pattern to which we cut our anticipations of life it was a season of imperialism the picturesque imperialism of the earlier kipling phase and we were all of us enthusiasts for the empire it was the empire of the white man's birthin in those days the sordid anti-climax of the tariff reform movement was still some years ahead of us it was easier for us at harbory to believe then than it has become since in our own racial and national and class supremacy we were the anglo-saxons the elect of the earth leading the world in social organization in science and economic method in india and the east more particularly we were the apostles of even-handed justice relentless veracity personal cleanliness and modern efficiency in a spirit of adventurous benevolence we were spreading those blessings over a reluctant and occasionally recalcitrant world of people for the most part colored our success in this had aroused the bitter envy and rivalry of various continental nations and particularly of france russia and germany but france had been diverted to north africa russia to eastern asia and germany was already the most considered antagonist in our path towards an empire over the world

this was the spacious and by no means ignoble project of the later 90s most of us harboury boys trained as i had been trained to be uncritical saw the national outlook in those terms we knew little or nothing until the fierce wranglings of the free traders and tariff reformers a few years later brought it home to us of the commercial financial and squalid side of our relations with the vast conjuries of exploited new territories and subordinated and subjugated populations we knew nothing of the social conditions of the massive people in our own country we were blankly ignorant of economics we knew nothing of that process of expropriation and the exploitation of labor which is giving the world the servile state the very phrase was 20 years ahead of us we believed that an englishman was a better thing in every way than any other sort of man the english literature science and philosophy were a shining and unapproachable light to all other peoples that our soldiers were better than all other soldiers and are sailors than all other sailors such civilization and...

section 8 of unmasked or the science of immorality to gentlemen by mary edwards walker this librivox recording is in the public domain recording by pamela nagami chapter 8 seminal weakness so common are the ideas that it is seminal weakness for men to discharge semen when not cohabiting with women that some really honest doctors have gone so far as to advertise themselves to cure the same others have made it a means to make money when they well know that the occasional emissions of that character is but an effort of nature to relieve itself of a surplus just as the throwing off of the ovum in woman every month is an effort of nature to rid the system of the ovum or eggs that are matured and unused if men are in healthy conditions this will occur every month to correspond with the emitting of the ovum and women whenever it occurs often or in either men or women it is either because of weakness or of unnatural excitement tobacco all kinds of intoxicating drinks highly seasoned food the vulgarity of women's fashionable dress that is ever appealing to the basest passions cause a drain upon the system that is undermining the constitutions of the masses this must continue so long as women follow the ever-changing fashions which are studies to excite men's passions and to get their money as soon as men fail to be attracted by one style as soon as its exciting novelty begins to wane another fashionable means of keeping up this passional excitement is presented not alone are the lookers on these fashions injured in mind body and morals but the women themselves are fearful sufferers in all these regards so intimately are all the interests of life blended that neither sex can suffer alone about an equal number of men and women are matured and the unperverted laws of nature are such that men and women respond to them equally when living properly nature is full of order and the ovum and the spermatozoa must be thrown off to make room for the constantly maturing from the age of puberty until the change in life the process of throwing off the ovum is one essential to health these pass from the ovaries through the fallopian tubes to the uterus it is important that the spermatozoa in men should pass off also protected by albumin as they pass through the many feet of tubing in the testes although all semen that is largely composed of albumin does not contain spermatozoa it is a fact that where there is no albuminous discharges spermatozoa is never found and such men cannot become fathers although they may be in good health instances have been cited to disprove this but close investigation has proved the correctness of our position we know an instance of this kind a woman who had been a mother when her first husband was living married a man who was very anxious to have children in consulting us she stated the difference in the seminal fluid of the two husbands and when we informed her that he could not be a father she expressed regrets on her husband's account in less than a year we attended her in confinement and about two years after she became a mother again another physician acknowledged the parentage and removed from the city where they resided several persons saw through the intrigues and kept watch of the parties and knew of the doctor visiting the city in question in a clandestine manner without her husband knowing of the same precisely nine months thereafter she became a mother again the woman's husband knew nothing of the doctor's last visit and was reconciled to the idea that he was the father of all three of the children many cases of real seminal weakness are caused by masturbation excessive copulation and by shaving the beard this last cause is a cause of masturbation for the whole nerve system is excited by the shaving process if the face was not shaved at all the beard would...
