Last week on Full Circle, First Voice Graduate, Channa Wilson , along with her partner Dana travelled to Alaska where they met a wonderful family who are reviving their Haida Nation's cultural practices. This is, of course, after the awful impacts of colonization: deaths from smallpox and other diseases, and Alaska Native children being shipped to boarding school where they were forbidden their language and cultural practices. Now, two generations of the Hamar family are carving ocean-going canoes, totem poles, and masks, weaving ceremonial regalia, practicing traditional harvesting of foods, curating a family museum of artifacts, and taking part in language revitalization.
