You are weak. I am weak. We all are weak. We need to grow in recognition of our weakness so that we can own it! Ignoring it won't do you any good. Trying to avoid it won't help either. Too many times has my lack of ownership over my weakness crippled my pursuit of music. We are human. It's okay to not have it firgured out. It's okay to not be an expert in every single area of your life. It is importnat to own your weakness so that you can learn to lean on others where they are strong. Build a team to run with. Use the areas where you are strong to aid them where they are weak. This all starts with your ability to own it. Own your weakness.
The difference between you and the person who is actively pursuing their dream is not money, fame, an abundance of resources, or connections... it's heart. At one point, they decided to just go for it. They decided to just start. I want to encourage you to do just that today. Whatever it is on your heart that you have been putting off because you've felt that you don't have what it takes, or you don't have the gear, skill set, connections, etc... that all changes today. "Start where you are..." From there, things will start to fall in to place. You have absolutely no idea what lies down the road ahead of you. Take the first steps today, and let God fill in the gaps.
Fail Fast. Not a phrase you hear someone say everyday. The reality is, the quicker you fail, the quicker you will learn how to get better at that thing you are pursuing, the career you are buidling, or that dream you are chasing down.
Failure will always be part of your life. That's a fact. It's what you do with your failures that will seperate you out from everyone else. Do you get back up? Do you learn from it? Do you see it as a stepping to success rather than a road block that can't be moved?
As songwriters, we need to be willing to embrace failure, dare I say, even welcome it in. This episode will both encourage and inspire you to see failure differently; to see it as an asset rather than an annoyance.
Honestly, I don't have a great description for this episode, other than that investing in my brand early on was one of the absolulte BEST decisions I ever made for my music. Listen to this episode to hear why.
I am so convinced that small shows are the key to success as a musician.
Often times, when I say yes to something, when I commit to something, I commit to what "I think" that something is. For instance, when I book a show, I commit to "what I think" playing that show will entail. This episode contains one of my all-time favorite stories about how God really challenged this way of thinking, and pushed me to be more generous with my gifts and talents.
Over the course of the last few years, there have been two pieces of advice that have kept me both grounded and encouraged as I have continued to press into this dream of music. On this episode, I share both of them, and how I think they can be applied to your life as well.
This podcast is my attempt to put my own pursuit of having a career in music, with all the moments of pain and joy, fear & comparison, victories & losses, at the disposal of those who want to dive into their own dream but don't know where to start.
In this first episode I share why I call this podcast a "platform of encouragement", and I share a story about how I drove over ten hours to play a show for 1 person.
