The opioid epidemic has had widespread effects on not just human medicine, but veterinary medicine as well. The profession has seen a range of side effects, from simple drug shortages to internal diversion to drug shopping by pet owners. As a result, practices have had to make a lot of changes, not only to comply with new regulations, but more importantly, to do their part to prevent drug diversion and minimize opioid overdose deaths. But how has animal care been affected?

In today’s episode, we continue our 2024 MVC preview series with Dr. Jane Quandt, professor of comparative anesthesia at the University of Georgia. She’s joining us to share a sneak peek into her pain management and anesthesia sessions, including the use of opioids and alternative options.

Pet ownership is on the rise, and it’s not just cats and dogs. More and more, small livestock—pygmy goats, potbellied pigs, and backyard chickens—are being kept as pets in urban and suburban areas. But what happens when that miniature pig reaches maturity and its unprepared owners can’t properly care for the 200-pound animal in their third-floor apartment? What happens when the baby goat outgrows its pajamas, and the reality of caring for a farm animal sets in?

Finding veterinary care for food animal species can be difficult in the big city, where most practitioners specialize in small animals. And when the owners are ill equipped to care for farm animals, the unfortunate reality is, many are surrendered to shelters that may not be outfitted to house or care for them. Worse yet, they are abandoned or even seized.

In today’s episode, we’re continuing our 2024 Midwest Veterinary Conference Preview Series with Dr. Alissa Wilhelm, a mixed-animal practitioner and assistant professor at OSU Large Animal Services. From husbandry and wellness plans to common diseases and treatment, she offers a sneak peek into her sessions in the Shelter Animal track. Her goal is to equip shelters and small animal veterinarians with basic knowledge of nontraditional pets, so they are better able to treat these animals and educate their owners.

Most of us are well aware of the impact of dental care on not just our oral health, but our overall wellness. This is true not only for humans, but animals as well. 

Studies have shown that the vast majority of cats and dogs over the age of 3 have some degree of periodontal disease, and with pet ownership on the rise, it is more important than ever to educate clients on the importance of regular dental cleanings for their pets. 

But until recently, dentistry wasn’t a staple of veterinary education, so many practitioners haven’t gotten the hands-on training needed to offer this vital service to their patients. So where do you begin?

In the age of the Me Too movement, most people are well aware of the necessity of asking permission before touching another person. But why not apply that concept to animals as well? After all, animals have good and bad days. Sometimes they want to play and interact; other times they'd rather enjoy some alone time—just like humans. Implementing the same permission-seeking protocol with animals could have dramatic effects. The number of bite-related injuries would undoubtedly decrease. Behavior-related relinquishments would drop. And imagine how different veterinary visits could be, if pets could be trained to consent to treatment!

That's exactly what certified animal behavior consultant Steve Dale reveals in this episode, the first in our 2024 Midwest Veterinary Conference Preview Series. Across the scenic landscape of Ohio, where the cervid industry plays a significant role in the state's economy, the threat of chronic wasting disease (CWD) looms large. Although only a few dozen captive and wild deer have been identified in Ohio, officials at the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) aren't taking chances: With no available vaccine or treatment for this fatal neurodegenerative disease, an epidemic could have a catastrophic effect on both the economy and environment.

On this episode, we welcome back Dr. Liane Davila-Martin, whose job at ODA is to ensure CWD stays in check. As a veterinary epidemiologist, her goal is to assess the risks and analyze data to predict—and help prevent—CWD outbreaks in Ohio's deer populations. Through initiatives like the CWD Herd Certification Program, Dr. Davila-Martin and her colleagues are working tirelessly to control and prevent the spread of this deadly disease.

In the interview, Dr. Davila-Martin reviews the clinical signs of chronic wasting disease, explains the reporting requirements, and explores the role of ODA's cervid health program.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE: THE SECRET OF SUCCESS SERIES

Veterinarians, technicians, and other animal care professionals are widely known as highly empathic. Being able to understand the feelings of others helps us establish stronger connections with both colleagues and clients, which in turn increases compliance and improves medical outcomes. But empathy is a double-edged sword. How do you tap into that empathy, day after day, without getting an emotional overload? And what if you simply can't empathize, either because you can't relate to the situation or you disagree with it entirely?
