If you’ve tuned in to the evening news over the last few months, you’ve heard that xylazine has made its way into the U.S. illegal drug supply, causing horrific side effects and even deaths in humans… and putting xylazine in the spotlight for both state and federal legislators. Earlier this year, Ohio was one of the first states to make xylazine a Schedule III controlled drug. How has this affected the licit use of xylazine in veterinary medicine? On today's show, OVMA Executive Director Jack Advent joins us to explain.

Motivational speaker Jim Rohn famously claimed that we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with. In other words, our significant relationships have a great impact on—and can even be the determining factor—in our future success... or lack thereof.
But how true is it?
In this episode, we welcome back Dr. Jennifer Quammen and Ryan Smith of Veterinarian Coaching. They join us to discuss their take on Jim Rohn's theory, which involves intentional selection of five specific types of people, with the goal of maximizing your personal and professional success. As your life and career evolve, so too does your dream team.

Everyone knows the stereotype: "Dogcatchers" are portrayed in movies as evil villains that snatch up lost animals, drag them to the pound, and lock them away in a cold cage, never to be seen again. Sound familiar? Though not used as much nowadays, the old-fashioned term has had a lasting negative impact on the animal control profession and the public's perception of it.
In this episode, we are joined again by Daniel Ettinger, the animal control supervisor for the Summit County Colorado Sheriff’s Office and host of the Animal Control Report podcast. He’s on a mission to change public perception about the notoriously misunderstood field of animal control. Listen in as Daniel gives us a sneak peek into the life of an animal control officer, dispels some of the harmful myths, and explains the realities of the job, both good and bad.

In today's high-demand society, stress and anxiety have become more common than ever. Unfortunately, it's much easier to get it than it is to relieve it—for both pets and people. Tackling anxiety and depression is often a trial-and-error situation. For some, finding the right treatment is easy. For others, it's a long, drawn-out process that involves trying many different medications and tinkering endlessly with dosages.
But there's another option. For Dr. Alexia Tsakiris, the answer is to look at the entire patient and all their symptoms—not just their stress: Environment, diet, gut health, age, and all the other big and little variables that could be contributing to their symptoms. Using this information, she then customizes an approach using a combination of herbs best suited to that whole patient. This holistic approach has guided her practice over the course of her career, leading to improved outcomes for both animals and their people.
In the second part of our herbal medicine series, Dr. Tsakiris is back to offer some tips to practitioners who are interested in offering herbal medicine in their conventional practice. Where can you and your staff find reputable training courses? What are the legalities you need to be aware of? Tune in for the answers to these questions and more!

In the first episode of this two-part series, we explore the possibilities of herbal veterinary medicine and what it takes to get started. Dr. Tsakiris talks about the extensive education and training required, research that backs the use of herbal remedies, and how to determine whether a product is good quality. She also shares a few of the herbs she's successfully used to treat stress and anxiety in both her patients and clients.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE: THE SECRET OF SUCCESS SERIES
As we learned on the last episode, everyone has voices in their heads that influence their day-to-day life—for the better and the worse. Once we become aware of those voices and can identify who is speaking at any given time, that's when we can begin to implement the secret formula of life... in other words, find success, happiness, and fulfillment!
Today, we welcome back Amy VanDeWater of Glue Veterinary Coaching for the second installment in our series on emotional intelligence, a.k.a. our ability to be aware of and manage our emotions and the emotions of others. She believes EQ is a superpower that can have a massive impact on our lives, and the sooner we learn to wield that power, the sooner we can achieve our heroic quest to find happiness, success, and fulfillment.
In this episode, Amy defines the second tenet of EQ: Self-management. Along with self-awareness, this is the cornerstone of the secret formula of life. Once we have achieved self-awareness, we can use the formula to begin reprogramming our brain's default responses and gradually improve our experience. With a little bit of work, this can be the key to fulfillment, both professionally and personally!

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE: THE SECRET OF SUCCESS SERIES
Anyone who tells you they know the secret to finding success and happiness is either trying to sell you something or flat-out wrong. Everyone knows there's no magical formula for anything, let alone something as nebulous as personal fulfillment.
Or is there?
Today, we welcome back Amy VanDeWater of Glue Veterinary Coaching for the first installment in our series on emotional intelligence, a.k.a. our ability to be aware of and manage our emotions and the emotions of others. She believes EQ is a superpower that can have a massive impact on our lives, and the sooner we learn to wield that power, the sooner we can achieve our heroic quest to find happiness, success, and fulfillment.
In part one, we lay the groundwork for Amy's "Secret Formula of Life" by digging into the concept of emotional intelligence, focusing on the first pillar of self-awareness, and introduces us to the inner voices that, if left unchecked, can sabotage every facet of life. Most importantly, she explains how to identify these voices in order to improve our experience, both at home and at work.
