When it was announced that JD (James Donald Bowman/Hamel, then James David Vance, then rebranded as JD Vance…. so, whatever he is calling himself this week) would be Trump’s running mate, we were perplexed. We’d followed along with his trajectory since his book came out—hell, one of us even read it to give him a chance (the rest of us decided to read Nancy Isenberg’s White Trash, instead). But his empty soul and willingness to sell himself out to the highest bidder were on clear display since the beginning of it all! We couldn’t believe the fawning mainstream media coverage of the book (well, okay, we could), and then his election to the Senate. Did no one else see through this fake hillbilly ruse?!

Turns out, lots of people, especially rural people, see right through him, and instead of those voices getting pushed aside, for once they’re squarely in the middle of the conversation. And thanks to the internet’s love of memes, we have been having a ball seeing how fellow rural folk are helping to educate the rest of the country on what a self-serving joke this guy is (albeit a dangerous, authoritarian one).
