This month, Future Artefacts FM features Rebeca Romero’s piece ‘The New Worshipers (El Peregrinaje)’, a thirteen-minute audio work. Using tone, pacing and hypnotic sound loops as tools, the work lures the listener into Romero’s world. We follow the protagonist’s journey as they partake in a mysterious ritual. The work evokes a sense of liminality, transitioning the boundaries between humans and their environment while reflecting on hierarchies left by colonial legacies. It questions what searching for a life-changing experience in a commodified world can look like, breaking the binaries between myth and reality by unsettling singular world views.
Rebeca Romero is a multidisciplinary artist born in Peru, based in London since 2014. She holds an MFA in Fine Arts from Goldsmiths University. Her work moves in the intersection of art, craft, design and tech. She is interested in connections between technology and an all too often imposed western vision of history. Through a range of media, including sculpture, textiles, ceramics, storytelling and video, she explores concepts of diasporic identity, truth, fiction and their relationship to the digital age.
