“But more than half of all the people I know in their 30’s, their 40’s, their 50’s, half of all the parents are not doing what they formally studied to do.”
This week Jude Foulston and Graeme Codrington discuss the future of skills at work. Challenging parents and teachers to a paradigm shift in their young learner’s educational journey apart from the traditional, narrow path to a university academic career and toward practical, usable and a range of skills relevant to every organization five years into the future.
The insightful discussion touches on artificial intelligence and algorithms potentially replacing most human menial tasks at a lower accumulated cost and quicker speed emphasizing the need for learners to develop future work skills in a combination of the following areas:
And many more internal human centered skills not easily replicated by a large computer.

Welcome to episode 8 where I chat with Kim Day about the work that the school she teachers at is doing, and has been doing for decades, to provide a child-centered holistic system of education - and why adapting our current educational system is so critical, as well as totally doable, for the 21st Century.
We chat about how we can make education relevant for the 21st century, about how we let children craft their own learning pathway, and no, we're not talking about homeschooling here, we're talking about an ex Model C, Government School getting this right in Durban, South Africa.
We talk about using the curriculum and how schools can customise it to individual interests, strengths, and needs. We talk about how Manor Gardens assesses their kids as well as how they cover the curriculum using a language across the curriculum approach and project-based learning.
Kim is a teacher with a passion for learning. She’s curious about the possibilities for creating learning environments that engage children and help them to flourish. Kim is involved in projects that innovate within traditional systems of education and is a teacher at Manor Gardens Primary School, a government school in Durban.

In this episode we chat with educational psychologist, speaker and author Naomi Holdt about how we can help our children, and ourselves, to recover from trauma.
This episode is especially relevant for families who have experienced trauma in KZN this month and who are struggling to settle back into life after the unrest we experienced throughout the province.

In this episode, I ask Graeme Codrington what he thinks schools should be doing to best prepare learners for their journey after school.
What I love about my conversations with Graeme is how he helps us reframe the way we think about things... helping us see things from different perspectives, and more often than not, a new way of thinking that pushes our boundaries, enabling us to think bigger...

Do you ever think about the number of transitions we go through in a lifetime, and how learning how to be more comfortable with change is actually a skill that can be developed and learnt as we keep adapting in these disruptive times.
And then if you think we, as parents, need to be comfortable with change, consider your kids and of the exponential amount of change that they will go through, in comparison to our own lives.
In this episode we speak with Keith Coats on why he believes becoming comfortable with transitions is a lifelong skill that we all need to keep developing and how he has been more intentional on his own parenting journey with helping his (now adult) kids learn how to embrace change.
Keith is a dad to 3 adult kids, author of Everything I learnt about leadership I learnt from the kids, a futurist and leadership thinker at TomorrowToday global.

I invited Graeme Codrington back today as there were some questions I wanted to ask him last week that we just didn’t get to. So in today’s episode, we chat about how Graeme thinks parenting is different now as we prepare our kids for the future and how this shows up in his life as he parents his 3 daughters. As Graeme says during the interview - we are the first generation of parents who know for sure that we don’t know what the future will be like for our kids and that means we have to approach parenting slightly differently!

I’m Jude Foulston, an introverted mom trying my best to raise kids who are happy & confident, kids who embrace all that makes them unique, while preparing them for an exciting future that looks really, nothing like the world we grew up in.
I believe there’s a whole set of skills that our kids aren’t being taught which will be critical for them to develop in order to thrive in the future and I believe it’s up to us, as parents, to help them develop these skills.
The Future Smart Parent podcast explores stories of parents who are parenting a little differently, yet very much intentionally, for a changing world. We listen to stories, and explore resources with the aim of helping parents with the tools needed to parent in the 2020s.
