Behind every successful city is thoughtful planning for the future, but it’s not enough to just plan for the future of communities, we also need to plan with the future. We need to image what the future might look like to shape it in a responsible, sustainable, and equitable way. The past few years have taught us change can happen rapidly, whether we are prepared or not. While no one could have predicted the impacts of the global pandemic, it taught us planning for a variety of future scenarios is key to being able to respond quickly when they happen. We also can clearly see now that we should start planning for a hybrid world, not just the built environment as we always have. Planners are uniquely situated for this work, having spent decades projecting populations and growth patterns in comprehensive plans. We talk about all this and more in this episode with Petra Hurtado, Research Director at the American Planning Association. Listen to the end to hear her take on what’s the next big idea poised to impact the world of planning.
