  • #158 - What's the Point? In Events, With Brendan Perring, General Manager and Chairman, IPIA and BAPC

    Send us Fan Mail

In a special series of a few podcasts under the theme of 'What's the point'? Marcus talks with Brendan Perring, General Manager and Chairman of IPIA and BAPC about industry issues, ideas, opinions and musings. In the first instalment, they discuss the point of Events, and why formats are changing...

    More about Brendan Perring

Starting out in the heroic world of student journalism, Brendan moved on to becoming a freelance reporter in the bonny land of Scotland. After graduating from Edinburgh University with an MA (Hons) in English Literature and History, he worked as an investigative reporter for the Sunday Times of Scotland.

Following this experience he moved to Wales and attained a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism from Cardiff University and carried out freelance work for a number of regional newspapers.
Brendan’s next move took him into the printing world as Editor at Signlink magazine and Deputy Editor of Print Monthly magazine. After two years he was promoted to Editor of Print Monthly and then this was shortly followed by becoming Managing Editor of Link Publishing, which owns these national print titles. Link Publishing is a multi-media business-to-business publisher, the platforms of which focus on in-depth technical, business and investigative news in their respective sectors. As part of his role he also developed and managed its online presence, social media presence, and multi-channel marketing strategy.

After helping to found Link Exhibitions, and with the successful launch of The Print Show, which took place for the first time in October 2015, Brendan was made director of Link Publishing and Link Exhibitions. Key responsibilities included managing its PR and marketing content and strategy, in addition to business development and creating its visitor attractions.

Seeking a fresh challenge after gaining this experience and finding he loved PR and creative project development, he moved to Speed Communications (The Mission Marketing Group) looking after four clients in the insurance, marketing, outsourcing and exhibition sectors.

With an opportunity then presenting itself from the IPIA to return to print and take up its newly created position of General Manager, Brendan jumped at the chance to use his accumulated experience and skills to support its members to grow and thrive through mutual cooperation.

  • #157 - Resuseabox: Entrepreneurship, Purpose, People & Planet, With Ellie Good, Chief Purpose Officer, Reuseabox

    Send us Fan Mail

I enjoyed talking with Ellie and finding out more about this sustainable business pioneer based near Lincoln in the UK. It is a great story of success with sustainability, entrepreneurship, purpose and people. Ellie said several times that the vision for the business was to grow a company that's good for people and the planet, and now in a relatively short time, Reuseabox has become a thriving and profitable business, with a clear purpose, and an inspiring mission! I hope you enjoy the conversation! I expect this business will go onto even greater things with such visionary and youthful energy!

Reuseabox is a challenger to the traditional cardboard box company, on a mission to educate and inspire businesses to reuse packaging before it’s recycled. To date they have diverted nearly 10 million boxes away from the waste stream and back into the supply chain for a second use.

Under Ellie’s leadership, Reuseabox recently gained B Corp certification, a testament to their dedication to people and planet. As members of 1% for the Planet they are on track to plant 1 million trees by 2030. When she’s not saving the world one box at a time, Ellie is also co-host of the Earth Your While Podcast and Lincoln’s People Planet Pint events.

  • #156 - ExedraBridge: Unlocking The Packaging Potential, With Chris Jordan, ExedraBridge

    Send us Fan Mail

In this interesting podcast, Marcus talks with Chris Jordan about how mindset, teams, leadership and culture can make such a huge difference in terms of the success of any technology product, and in particular, those that are trying to gain a place in a new market. So often, we think that because one approach works in one market, then it will work in another! As a result, we often fail to take into account the idiosyncrasies of a market and the unique cultures, challenges and concerns. Chris believes that highly effective communication can overcome most barriers to change, but failure to communicate properly causes blockages and this slows or halts progress. Chris is a believer that this is a big contributor to the relatively slow adoption of digital print for packaging. Anyhow, tune in! Really interesting chat with an experienced, wise and innovative business professional!

  • #155 - FuturePrint Vision Report 2024: Navigating Volatility, With Marcus Timson and Frazer Chesterman

    Send us Fan Mail

In this podcast, Frazer and Marcus discuss some of the headline themes from the FuturePrint Vision Survey which was conducted between the end of November 16 to December 2, 2023.

156 people from over 30 countries completed the survey and respondents mostly came from print technology businesses and print production businesses.

Results revealed that AI, Sustainability, and Skills Shortages are the defining issues of 2024, while unprecedented geopolitical events continue to have a significant impact on confidence within the print sector. Indeed, many people believe this level of volatility will become normalised.

But with Drupa taking centre stage in 2024, what impact will this have as a stimulus for growth and opportunity? What role will technology be playing in the future etc? How has buying behaviour changed, and has marketing strategy shifted enough to match this trend?

We discuss these issues and more as we launch the report and survey! Much of the analysis is our opinion, and we welcome feedback and the opinions of others, so do get in touch.
