In this episode of The 5G Factor, our series that focuses on all things 5G, the IoT, and the ecosystem as a whole, I'm joined by my colleague and fellow analyst, Clint Wheelock, for a look at 5G news and what's going on that caught our eye.
Our conversation focused on:
Qualcomm Calls for 5G to Standalone. In a recent blog, Qualcomm advocates that many of the key innovations in 5G require 5G Standalone (SA) — a network architecture that can allow new, differentiated services which can be monetized for new revenue streams. However, only 22% of the 524 operators investing in 5G networks are investing in 5G SA. We provide our perspective on why more operators need to deploy 5G SA to accelerate the pace of innovation across the 5G ecosystem and what benefits 5G SA brings in contrast to 5G non-standalone (NSA) implementations.
Juniper's New Beyond Labs Aims to Solve Biggest Challenges of Experience-First Networking Era. Juniper Networks Beyond Labs is a fresh initiative focused on shaping the future of the networking and IT industries with emphasis on pioneering research and experimental technology developments. For Juniper customers and partners, such as Eurofiber and Intel, along with the broader academic community like Purdue University, Juniper Beyond Labs will provide an opportunity to influence research directions and pathfinding projects. We provide our views on Juniper extending its collaboration with Intel and work on the integration of the Intel FlexRAN Reference Architecture, private 5G networks, Juniper RIC and the Juniper Cloud-Native Router on Intel Xeon processors, can enable new capabilities that advance 5G transformation.
Samsung Electronics and MediaTek Demonstrate 5G Uplink Capabilities with Three Transmit Antenna. Samsung and MediaTek successfully completed testing of 5G Standalone Uplink (UL) 2CC Carrier Aggregation with C-Band UL MIMO to improve uplink speeds. The Suwon, Korea-based lab demo used three transmit (3Tx) antennas to improve upload experiences. We consider and review what 5G ecosystem benefits 3Tx capabilities can provide across the 5G ecosystem in areas such as cloud gaming, video collaboration platforms, and live streaming.
In this vignette of The 5G Factor, Ron Westfall and Steve Dickens provide their perspective on Red Hat becoming the primary infrastructure platform for Nokia's Core Network Applications.
The conversation focused on:
Red Hat Becomes the Primary Infrastructure Platform for Nokia's Core Network Applications. Nokia and Red Hat reached an agreement to integrate Nokia's core network applications with Red Hat OpenStack Platform and RedHat OpenShift. 350 personnel at Nokia will be transferring to Red Hat as Nokia moves on from developing the platforms that host its software. The duo will jointly support and evolve existing Nokia Container Services (NCS) and Nokia CloudBand Infrastructure Software (CBIS) customers while developing a path for customers to migrate to Red Hat's platforms. We delve into the implications for the 5G ecosystem and telco cloud journeys.
In this vignette of The 5G Factor, Ron Westfall and Steve Dickens provide their perspective on HPE completing its acquisition of private wireless specialist Athonet and its impact on the private 5G market segment and the overall 5G ecosystem.
The conversation focused on:
HPE Completes Acquisition of Private 5G Specialist Athonet. With the acquisition of Athonet, HPE sets the company's sights on bringing private 5G and WiFi together to augment and innovate enterprise connectivity including using HPE GreenLeke's edge compute and security/SASE portfolio assets. HPE's Aruba portfolio is already widely deployed throughout global WiFi implementations putting HPE in a strong position to drive private 5G and WiFi services and capabilities, including mixed network scenarios, according to customer needs. HPE also gains 450 more deployments across major verticals such as healthcare, transportation, utilities, and government. We assess what the completion of the acquisitions means for the private 5G market and the overall 5G ecosystem.
In this vignette of The 5G Factor, Ron Westfall and Steve Dickens provide their perspective on Azure for Operators strategic commitment to build 5G modern connected applications across edge environments.
The conversation focused on:
Azure for Operators: Build 5G Modern Connected Apps at the Edge. Azure for Operators (AfO) is targeting the advancement of 5G modern connected apps across cloud computing fabrics, especially the edge. AfO bring Azure Public MEC, which leverages the mobile operator's public 5G network connectivity, and Azure Private MEC, which brings the power of the cloud to the enterprise's own infrastructure, as key solution offerings. We explore why AfO can move the needle in driving 5G modern connected apps across 5G environments.

Today's headlines are awash with reports of cloud repatriation. Some surveys show over 70% of IT respondents move some workloads, or data, back to on-premise infrastructure. Many business and technology considerations underpin this trend. Join Greg and Daniel as they host David Linthicum from Deloitte Consulting to unpack what's behind these headlines and the impact on overall IT architecture decision-making.

On this episode of the Futurum Tech Webcast – Interview Series, I'm joined by Gunnar Hellekson, GM and VP of Red Hat Enterprise Linux for a candid and transparent conversation about CentOS Stream and the future of public RHEL-related source code releases.
Our discussion covers:
In this episode of the Futurum Tech Webcast – Interview Series, we address the topic of Automotive Ethernet innovation and why it is essential to meeting the fast-evolving demands of automotive switches that support the zonal architectures of next-generation software-defined vehicles. Optimized for the most advanced automotive architectures, the BrightLane Q6223 switch delivers 90 Gbps of bandwidth, nearly double the capacity of today's available automotive switches.
The new switch family also includes a combination of advanced security features not found together in any other automotive switch product. The Brightlane Q622x family incorporates IEEE 802.1AE-2018-compliant Media Access Control (MACsec) link security on every port, up to 10G, for encrypting data traveling between automotive components to prevent man-in-the-middle and other attacks. Marvell's patent-pending Ternary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM) implementation for DPI provides for wire-speed packet classification to ensure packet validity and the ability to filter and classify more than 4,000 IPv4/IPv6 flows for heightened intrusion detection. Moreover, the Q622x family incorporates a hardware security module (HSM) for encryption, MACsec key management and trusted boot functionality to further secure the in-vehicle network.
My guest today is Amir Bar-Niv, VP of of Marketing, Automotive at Marvell Technology, a top-tier semiconductor company. Amir is a new guest on this show, and incisively shares his insights and perspective on the direction of the Automotive Ethernet switching market segment and its vital role across software-defined vehicle environments.
To start our discussion, we highlighted the ongoing major transformation of the global automotive industry including the swift uptake of electric vehicles (EVs) and how impactful the software-defined vehicle trend is driving Ethernet networking adoption across car manufacturers and the automotive ecosystem.
Our conversation drilled down on the following major topics:
* Why auto manufacturers are strategically committed to using central automotive Ethernet switches for in-vehicle networks.
* How Marvell is optimally positioned to drive Automotive Ethernet technology and zonal architecture adoption.
* The ways Marvell is attaining and maintaining its sharp competitive advantages as competition intensifies in the automotive switch segment of the next-generation software-defined vehicle market.
* Marvell's introduction of its new central switch, MV-Q6222, and its influence on accelerating zonal architecture implementation.
* What Marvell is doing to mitigate security risks as the complexity of hardware and software in automobiles increases.
* Why the growth potential for Ethernet in vehicles is substantial beyond the current changes in the car network.
