This work is a reflection on the escalating number of climate refugees predicted over the next century, displayed in an apt location along the flood planes of the Thames. March 25, 2025Alegria Repila SmithAlegria Repila Smith, 'Caryatid (Fallen)'. Alegria's contribution to Winter Sculpture Park attacks the sinister forces which destroyed the original ‘Caryatid’. Having promised ‘Caryatid’ to WSP, she discovered it had been sledgehammered to pieces. ‘Caryatid’ (2023) was a memorial of the violences suffered by women in Woodhouse Moor, Leeds. A trick of fate resulted in the abduction and slaughter of the monument. ‘Caryatid (Fallen)’ seeks retribution against the perpetrators of this continued attack on womens’ safety and memory. Lying prone in Thamesmead, it bears its wounds for all to see. During WINTER SCULPTURE PARK, the earth attempts to conceal the unforgettable horrors which created it. Concrete never forgets.
