DwD 0382: Race Seat vs OEM Seats: Advantages/Disadvantages and When to Change to a Race Seat

We talk about some of the key differences between a racing seat vs your OEM seat. This also includes the seat belt and harness differences. Obviously, there is a difference between the construction and installation of the race seat, but their use also makes a few "normal" use cases a bit more difficult. We cover several of the differences and advantages and disadvantages of the conversion. We also go with when it may be a good decision and when it really should be a non-optional addition to your car. As always, try to keep your safety as the top priority.

GHIT 0381: DJ Alessandrini - Race Driver and Sim Racer

Bill first saw DJ Alessandrini when he was doing some friendly YouTube stalking of the GLTC series and has been following him ever since. DJ has also started a podcast (Lizard Brains Podcast) of his own with co-host Tom O'Gorman and it has become one of our can't miss podcasts. We end up talking all things Sundae Cup, podcasting, driving and especially how best to learn and use SIM racing during the off season to improve our driving in the real world. DJ is a great guy and we can't wait to see him again, hopefully at a track.

    Highlights for this episode include:

    1) DJ's driving and racing history and how he got a race car for free.

    2) How video games and SIM racing have fed his competitive side when he was growing up (and still) and how autocross gave him another outlet to compete and the thrill of driving in real life. A lifelong passion was born.

    3) How he was able to be globally competitive in sim racing seemingly overnight. PS it wasn't overnight, at all.

    4) How transitioning between sim racing and real-world racing can compliment each other and ways that sometimes hamper people from getting the most out of the cross training.

    5) Vicki cannot wait to start talking about Sim racing and we end the intro section prematurely and dive right into some of our problems with sim racing in general and some great suggestions to help us with the transition, both using monitors and virtual reality headsets.

    6) How best to make the transition into sim racing, especially if you are already an experienced race driver. This includes the best ways to practice and learn, as well as the minimum equipment needed and setting.

    7) Several great tips on getting acclimated to using a VR headset from DJ and one horrible method that did not work from us.

    8) Bill mentions his issues with the Global MX5 cup car on iRacing and DJ has thoughts on what may be some of the issues he has been having.

    9) What options there are to personalize the livery on your car in iRacing and other sim racing programs.

    10) Shopping tips, priorities, and resources for all the various components needed for a good sim racing experience, including the sweet spot for the best performance bang for the buck items you need or can upgrade to if you have already started.

    11) Tips for prepping for your first race in the spring after a long off season.

    12) Some of the key settings and issues that can help with the transition into sim racing

    13) We also cover the benefit of using a coach to help with the racing and how that applies in sim racing as well.

    14) We also go into the Lizard Brains podcast he hosts with former guest Tom O'Gorman

    15) How he differentiates between instructing and coaching and how sim racing offers several advantages that are almost impossible to replicate racing in the real world.

GHIT 0380: Lemons Rally Wrap Up – Day 2 of the 2022 Fall Failage Rally

Day two has concluded and we are reporting live from a restaurant arcade somewhere in either NY State or Vermont. It has been a long trip and another long day on the road. Spirits remain high and the rain has held off to this point. In addition, we have three entrants with birthdays today, so everyone wish them all a happy birthday. On this episode we are joined by Rally Master Jeff Stobbs and Tarl and Kirk, two entrants from the Cut Rate Roofing team in their "convertible" Econoline.

Tomorrow is the last day for this event, and we may or may not be reporting back again tomorrow as most entrants and teams will be making a mad dash to return home. Some may even be silly enough to try to make it into work on Monday. Rookies, lol.

DwD 0378: Racing 101: Jargon – What is Brake Pad Walk Back or Knock Back

On our racing 101 series, we often go over jargon that can confuse you at the track. In this episode, we start to talk about brake pad walk back or knock back. This can occur on many cars and be caused by several sources. We try to talk about what it would feel like on your car and what you can do to minimize its effect while on track. We also speculate on what can be the sources in your braking system that can lead to having this condition. Please fee free to expand upon our discussion, as we have rarely experienced this phenomenon on track. As a bonus, we also discuss a few other brake pedal related feelings that you may encounter on track and what the cause of them are.

After racing, well almost racing with us, at our last race at Thompson, Gary is now a guest on the podcast and welcomed back at any event we attend in the future. We talk with Gary about his experience with rugby and his transition from traditional ball and stick sports into what is now his racing team - Tweed Motorsports. Having raced in many disciplines and with many series in a rapid succession, Gary provides his perspective on endurance racing vs sprint racing, as well as his experience getting his racing license from an open wheel racing school. We also go through how Gary felt at his first ever Lemons event with us and how it may have differed versus his expectations. The code phrase for this episode is: Hunting For Space.

On this Dominating with Dawson, return to the topic of threshold braking and address several aspects of the technique. In addition, we start to review several ways to practice the technique safely on track. We then discuss the proper use of the technique, where and when, as well as how to determine when to use the technique and potentially where not to utilize it. There is a bit of disagreement on the team on the utilization of threshold braking when on track.

  • GHIT 0375: Ken Hill – On The Line and the Fundamentals of Performance Driving

GHIT 0375: Ken Hill – On The Line and the Fundamentals of Performance Driving

Ken Hill returns to the podcast to discuss the racing line and the key, fundamental factors that contribute to consistent, fast, and safe lap times. As with all things related to high performance driving and racing, the optimal line is really a complex solution to a series of variables including track conditions, car performance, and driver skill, but the "line" is really fundamental with minor changes to account for the potential for the car to corner, accelerate, and decelerate. In the end, the goal is to have the car in the right place at the right time to be capable to accelerate at full throttle for the longest amount of time. The best way to approach this is to work backwards and therefore starts with corner exit and the point where the driver can safely put down maximum power for positive acceleration. Then we should work backwards through the reference points of the turn to accomplish this goal. The earlier in the turn, the more variable the position and the approach angle will be to car and track conditions. In the end, the preferred strategy will usually focus on the critical points of reference with the prioritization of exit speed and angle for most cases/turns. We also discuss the variation of the corner apex as a function of the performance of the vehicle. Typically, the variation is much less than most think, on the order of a few feet, with faster cars typically having a later apex. This is one of our better episodes and Bill is already on his third listen, lol.

DwD 0374: What Line Is It Anyway? – An Why Are There So Many

A long time listener wrote in and had a question about "The Line". It appears that there are several lines. One line is the school line or the HPDE line. Then there is the race line or racing line. It appears that the listener is stuck between the line the "looks" correct to them, and the school line and is trying to transition to the racing line. All of this is leading to a bit of indecision and almost confusion on track. Not a good situation. In this episode we go over the various lines and how/why each exist and what to do to gain consistency.
