DwD 0354: Overdoing It and Leading to Potential Burnout
As is often the case, we sometimes show you what not to do. This time, it was after three straight race weekends in multiple states that Bill entered a zombie state. This is not optimal for performance or enjoyment and can not only turn a fun recreational past time into a large effort/struggle, but can also impact your performance and potentially the personal safety through car preparation and/or your driving. We illustrate this by our recent poor performance after our last endurance race. It is still a good idea to treat a HPDE/race weekend as a sporting event and prepare for it accordingly, including food, drink, and sleep. Ben offers up several indicators that can help you self diagnose when this may be happening to you at an event.

GHIT 0353: Chris Haase Racer, Lemons Judge, and Cookie Stealer
Chris Haase has been racing with the 24 Hours of Lemons for more than a decade and began judging a few years ago. All was going so well until he stole a Cookie. Lol. We had been looking to have Chris on the podcast for a while but after last Month's race at NJMP Thunderbolt, we had to bring him on and interrogate him a bit. During this episode, we talk about a wide variety of cars that he has driven and raced, judging, Lemons tech tips, and how to race for a 4 hour stint (why????). Bonus info: Many early Lemons racing stories including long ago practice known as "The Curse". Vicki is beside herself. This episode is a bit shorter than that and probably part one of many.

GHIT 0352: Our Track Day at the NY Safety Track
When we were invited to a new track for an HPDE we did what we always say to do – "say yes" and thank you. Our drivers for the event were Vicki, Alan, and Jen. Bill was there primarily to help instruct and to start breaking in our new race car. Even better, Kyle Lockrow said he wanted to come over and help out in any way. Finally, someone to instruct Vicki, lol. One this episode, we talk about prepping our three cars, how is this new to us track, and the event overall. We had a few mechanical issues with our cars, but overall the event was great and well worth going, especially if you are in the area. Special thanks to Mario and Ian Korf for setting up this event.

DwD 0351: What is rotation – Part 4 or maybe more?
We are going to take advantage of this week's Judge Jeremy covering for Ben and go into car rotation for at least the fourth time. We try to discuss what people are talking about when they refer to a car having good or bad rotation or how they were able to get the car to rotate through a turn. The last time we looked, there are several potential axes of rotation, and many/most can result in a poor or expensive outcome. Once again, this is a topic that we may need to revisit in a future episode, lol, but we give it another good try and did a lot better than some of our previous discussions.

1) We start off with a simple one, how to improve when your current limit is self-imposed by your natural tendency towards self-preservation and what can be helpful in pushing through this ever so common barrier.
2) When should an instructor move from an instructing role to a coaching role with a student or client.
3) What to look at when looking at your data and video as your driving skill improves. (and overthinking it like Reese).
4) Advice to break through a plateau.
5) What to look at when reviewing your in-car video at a track.
6) The difference between being Smooth vs being Fast and Smooth
7) Using anticipation vs reaction as well as the subtle differences between having an expectation versus anticipation.
8) Some ideas on how to help a student who is lacking confidence or has had a recent bad experience on track.
9) Vicki is still working on getting an understanding of what the friction circle is and several ways for what to look for and how to interpret it best.
As always, we had some great discussion with Ross on related areas and some unrelated areas.

GHIT 0349: Dave Carpenter from the Three Pedal Mafia's Cheaties Car
At long last, we have secured Dave Carpenter for the podcast. Dave drives in the orange Cheaties themed Cressida with the Three Pedal Mafia team. In addition, Bill drove in the Cressida at the last race in NJMP where it finished 6th overall in spite of Bill driving. With so much to talk about, we tried to limit it to the Lemons race at NJMP's Thunderbolt track, all about the Cressida, and how Dave manages the team and maintains a pretty strict budget and still routinely finishes in the top ten overall despite being out paced by a large fraction of the field. Hopefully, we will have Dave on again to talk more about his racing past and iRacing. PS Vicki is in full post race hangover/zombie mode for this episode.

4) A quick summary of some of the other cars/carnage in the Three Pedal Mafia fleet at NJMP 2022.
5) How 3PM was able to finish their collection of all 24 Hours of Lemons awards at NJMP this year and secure the missing "Halloween Meet Gasoline" award to complete the trophy case. In addition, they we somehow able to manage a "Blazing Saddles" related theme and not be arrested, lol.
6) Various ways that Dave has been able to successfully race while maintaining a budget and having a car that performs well and reliably.
7) How to prioritize performance changes for endurance racing.
GHIT 0344: Race Recap: GHIT's Ladies Team Raced In our 1993 Honda Civic
Our first ever race was at NJMP's Thunderbolt track with 24 Hours of Lemons and seems to be a lifetime ago. We started out knowing nothing and that was probably being kind. At this year's event, we entered our 1993 Honda Civic with its full theme to thank the Everyone Racers podcast for all their help getting us started and helping us ever since. Vicki and Jennifer raced with two of the hosts from the Shifting Points podcast at this event. Audra had raced once with us last year and this was Jess's first ever wheel to wheel racing event. How did the event go? Did the ladies Dominate? Was the theme a bit overdone?
This year we did it all for the Cookie. Until it was stolen. More details to follow soon.

DwD 0348: Coasting On Track - Allowed or Not
One of the often quoted things that may have first come from Ross Bentley's "Speed Secrets" book series is that you should never be coasting on track, but should either be on the gas pedal/throttle or on the brake. Ross has been on the podcast several times and we have discussed this aspect of racing with him a few times both on the podcast and at the track. We decided to get into it today and with Ben discuss whether there are any scenarios where "coasting" is acceptable or even allow for improved lap times. If you have time before listening to the episode, please take a moment and think of any areas where you would think coasting can be the best option for a certain area of a track and then listen to what is no doubt the first episode of a multiple part series on this topic.
There was a minor interruption by our cat during the episode, we apologize for the distraction. Lol. We then moved onto ways for Vicki (and you) to gradually work on reducing the amount of coasting on track, especially before and at turn in to a corner.
If you have any thoughts related to "proper" use of coasting or why costing has no place on a race track, please let us know in a podcast review, on our social media, or send us an email at [email protected] and we can share it in an upcoming Dominating With Dawson.

GHIT 0347: Jeremy Hall from Monkey House Racing
Over the past few years, we had met Jeremy at many events, but it was more in passing. Jeremy usually races with his team called Monkey House Racing, but for the Pittsburgh event he was racing with the Skunk Oil Racing team and our team in a 1999 BMW 3 series, an E36 for all the cool dudes. Unfortunately, the event did not go well with two incidents, one Saturday and another Sunday, both at turn 2 of PittRace. Jeremy was driving for the second event and the car may not be repairable. During the episode, we talk about the event, make several blatant attempts to draft Jeremy and his team onto ours. We think he is weakening. This episode was recorded several weeks ago just after our PittRace endurance race with the 24 Hours of Lemons series.

DwD 346: Track Selection: The Impact on Learning
On this episode of Dominating with Dawson, we wanted to discuss an aspect of racing education that can often be overlooked. The typical decision path to getting a racing license or going to an HPDE event or a track day is to find the closest track to you that has an event that fits within your schedule. This is likely to be what you do as well. However, one factor that is neglected in this methodology is the impact that the track design and layout can have on your learning and progression as a driver. There are many tracks that have very little run off room or walls, trees, rocks, etc. that are very close to the track and can make a small off track event a potentially very large cost event. It can also affect the comfortability of the driver towards pushing the car and their personal driving limits during the event. We talk about a few examples of tracks that are very forgiving and a few that we have been to that have layouts that are not quite as friendly. This is not to say that it is the tracks "fault" because in the end the responsibility always remains within the driver's seat and it is their responsibility to maintain control of the car and determine when/if they are going to push towards the limit. We love every single track but wanted to point out something that should be taken into account, especially as you are in your middle stages of learning and progressing as a driver. As a bonus, for the exact same price, we include a great story of an early HPDE event in Ben Dawson's HPDE history.
If you have any favorite tracks to work on your skills or push your limits, please let us know. Also, if we missed a few of the higher consequence tracks or turns, please let us know in a podcast review or on our social media, or send us an email at [email protected] and we can share it in an upcoming Dominating With Dawson.
