We had been planning to have Eric on the podcast for several months but couldn't wait any more after he went to his first wheel to wheel event a few weeks ago at PittRace. We first heard of Eric as a result of his two Facebook groups related to high performance driving and high performance driving fitness. He was joined on this episode by his teammate Fred. They are forming a new racing team to help satisfy their recently acquired wheel to wheel racing itch.
On this episode's Dominating with Dawson, Ben gets subjected to the term "Lift Off Oversteer". Ben has not experienced it to this point, as far as he can tell. We end up discussing what it might be and how it is a result of weight transfer. We also go into how weight transfer can be used to help and to hurt you on a track. Regardless of whether this is a Bigfoot sighting or a real phenomenon, we take a bit of time to discuss the topic and its potential effects.

Highlights from this episode include:
1) Eric manages the High Performance Driving and Racing Enthusiasts and The HPDRE Fit Facebook group to help grow our sport. Fred is also a driving instructor for several groups, as well as a lead driving instructor for Extreme Experience. Their team is in the midst of creating a SpecE46 BMW racing car.
2) At Eric's first event he was fully sucked in immediately and wanted to drive a second stint as soon as he got out of the car for a driver change. The hook is very set. His long term goal is to drive the Rolex 24 in the next 10 years.
3) Eric and Fred go into how they have each helped grow the sport and assist drivers at all levels improve at the events they attend. We also go into some of the more common areas that people have trouble with at their first few events driving on track.
4) Fred goes into what Extreme Experience is, what the events focus on, and most importantly, why M3ntal, lol. We also cover the various types of learning venues, including high performance driving schools, driving events, driving education, and experience type events. The great thing is that the variability allows each driver to find the exact balance to fit their driving desires and goals.
5) What are the pluses and minuses of helping/instructing a driver from the "right seat" as well as a few track stories. Including what is a "tank slapper" and how to deal with it when/if it occurs.
6) Eric goes into the concept of smooth driving and how it can help being fast. We may need to have a segment with Eric and Ben in the future. I know I'd bring popcorn. lol.
7) How part of improving your driving often involves a bit of being uncomfortable.
8) Eric also goes into the creation and goals of the High Performance Driving and Racing Enthusiasts group and the HPDRE Fit group.
Ross Bentley returns to the podcast to review the 2021 One Lap of America event that finished last week. This was Ross's first One Lap and he seemed to have a blast. I think the hook has been set and Ross's inherent competitiveness will likely lead to him trying to win it in the future. We go into the event as a whole, its history, how the 2021 event went, and every detail we could think of to scout for Bill's eventual entry in a coming year. It sounded like a great time and should probably be on almost every high performance driver's bucket list. Now which car should we enter, hmmmm.
On this episode's Dominating with Dawson, Ben clarifies what people mean when they say the term "pedal fest". Bill first heard this related to drag racing. Vicki had heard it but not a clue as to what it meant. We also go into what the goal should be on track, the usual causes of the "fest" and ways to think about re-applying the throttle to minimize the issue. Ben also demonstrates the sound that your car may have if this happens to you, lol.

Highlights from this episode include:
1) We start with a display of a bit of podcast time travel involving Ross's appearances on our podcast.
2) Ross summarizes how the original "Cannonball Run" event transformed into the current One Lap of America" event and how it is structured.
3) The event consisted of a scheduled ~20 events at various tack facilities across the country that change from year to year. This year the total travel distance was almost 4,000 miles in the week, not counting any of driving within the events.
4) Tracks consisted of: Tire Racks' Skid Pad, Grissom AFB for an autocross, Memphis International Raceway, Eagles Canyon, NOLA, Atlanta Motorsport Park, the Lanier Oval, Summit Point, and Gingerman.
5) What to pack, what to bring, how to prep, car and tire selection, etc. Yep, it's in there.
6) Great stories abound about the cars, the drivers, the track events, the transits, and even some good hearted sponsor induced bounties for the event.
7) We hope to have a few other teams on the podcast as well to discuss the event in coming episodes.
We met the Nittany Lemons at our recent 24 Hours of Lemons race at PittRace. Their team includes Eric Junker, who gets blamed for any electronics and powertrain issues, Jared Sable, who is the past SAE team captain and responsible for the team overall, and Becca Baker who takes care of the driver controls, brakes and safety systems, and car ergonomics. They were a great group and seemed to have a great time and fully embrace the Lemons racing paddock. Even with all their SAE team background, they learned a ton at the race.
On this episode of Dominating with Dawson, we talk about Tire Talk. What does it mean when your tires start making noise on the track and how to use this new information source to improve your track driving.

Jennifer takes the lead for this episode as we discuss the recent HPDE at Mid Ohio with the NASA Great Lakes group that Bill and Vicki attended as an early Father's Day gift. The weekend was a bit chilly and started off with two dry stints Saturday and ended with two very wet stints. Sunday was the reverse. We go into the event as a whole and also go into what transpires at Mid O when it gets wet. Mid Ohio is widely known as one of the lowest traction tracks in the US when it gets wet and it did not disappoint Vicki as her first time driving at Mid Ohio. If all goes well, Jennifer will be joining Vicki and Bill at Mid Ohio in about a month.
On this episode's Dominating with Dawson, we go over passing and start with defining what dive bombing is and then get into a discussion of the preferred passing approaches, especially during HPDE's and eventually in wheel to wheel racing. This includes a discussion of the point at which a pass is complete. We also talk about the approach when trying to pass in a lower horsepower/momentum car.

Highlights from this episode include:
1) Last minute car changes end in Vicki and Bill sharing the Toyota 86 for this weekend's event at Mid O.
2) This was Vicki's first time at Mid Ohio and her first time driving the Toyota 86 on track. Bill prepared her for driving MidO in the rain, but it is really a hard thing to comprehend how different the traction level is from a dry track to the wet track, especially at MidO. How did Vicki do? What did she think of the track? What did she think of MidO when it's wet? Where does it rank in her personal track top 5 or 10?
3) How did Vicki do? What did she think of the track? What did she think of MidO when it's wet? Where does it rank in her personal top 5 or 10 tracks? Same for Bill.
4) Our earlier skid pad events helped when going around Mid Ohio, especially in the rain.
5) Vicki goes through her first weekend with NASA Great Lakes in HPDE 2. Bill was in the HPDE 3 run group for this weekend. There are several differences between the groups and we try to summarize the differences and how HPDE 1 builds into HPDE 2 and then into HPDE 3.
6) Bill and Vicki try to describe some of the drills that are run at the events. The drills really are great learning tools and tons of fun. Some of the drills were changed due to the lower grip of the rain stints. NASA Great Lakes remains our favorite HPDE group to really learn how to be a better driver and racer, increasing not only your speed but also your safety on track.
7) The three biggest differences that are key to how NASA Great Lakes HPDE program works so well include the in class sessions, the track drills, and the way that the post stint debriefs are held and used to help the drivers to learn more quickly.
8) Bill makes several attempts to get Jennifer to go to the next event at Mid Ohio. While each was weak, they added up to the desired end result, lol.
9) Vicki is tired from the trip and switches the terms "Spoiler" and "Splitter". She really needs to get more sleep before podcasting, lol. Luckily Bill caught it, but ended up doing it poorly and started the process of ending up sleeping in the tub again. lol.
10) We have noticed that the more Vicki learns about working on the cars, the more she worries that something is wrong with the car and comes in to check. Now we need to work on finding the balance. Still "In Training", lol.
11) Our telemetry for this event consisted on the Apex Pro and the Garmin Catalyst. Vicki is relaxing in the car and starting to really understand and use the devices to help her. This was also her first time using the Garmin Catalyst on track. We are starting to develop a process to use both, both on during and after a stint. Vicki especially likes the Garmin since it doesn't sound like Bill when she is driving.
12) A listener requested a discussion of Mid Ohio in the rain. We tried our best to summarize but it really is something that needs to be experienced. Bill also goes into how he approaches a wet track and how he approaches exploring the track to look for higher traction areas of the track.
13) Bill makes another feeble attempt to get Joey to come on the podcast. Someday he will weaken and say yes.
14) How does it feel to have a personal best during the weekend? Great. Except when it is a 1:50.01. Luckily Bill had one more stint to go out at the end of Sunday and break that personal best as well.
15) We go into the customary Good, Bad, and the Ugly, as well as what we learned during the weekend.
16) Vick says that Bill is right. Time to play the lottery. We might actually be on our way to the deserted island race track.
We initially met Elizabeth Jolly at our second ever race at the 2018 24 Hours of Lemons race in Thompson CT. We then listened to her on the first few Shifting Points podcast. Then we met her at our recent skid pad and autocross event at Lime Rock Park with the SCDA group. It was at this point, we realized that these three ladies were all the same person. We could say we were overwhelmed at our second race; we could also say that we didn't recognize her since she was in her "Flo" costume, but it was great to meet her in person for the second time. On this episode, we catch up with Elizabeth on her thoughts about the SCDA event, her new E30 race car and then we talk through how to learn to work on a car from a starting point of near zero skills, experience, and tools. Both Elizabeth and Vicki have both progressed far in the past few years and maybe someday Bill will as well. Lol.
On this episode's Dominating with Dawson, we go into Ben's extensive karting experience and discuss the various types of karts and kart racing available. Karting can definitely help your driving and racing, most things translate, and it is a great way to practice for relatively low cost. We do try to go into the parts of karting that translate and what doesn't translate directly due to the difference in car geometry and suspension. While Ben is pulled away for his daddy duties, we take a slight detour into cake baking and decorating from our resident cake decorating expert, Miss Jen. Our first ever partial WOOT DwD episode. Even Ben came to the table with a Coca Cola cake, recipe tbd, lol.

Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers
Highlights from this episode include:
1) Bill herds/hosts this episode. Vicki and Jen, as always, are so excited to have a fellow lady racing driver.
2) Elizabeth races autocross and endurance racing and almost all other forms of driving she can try. She started with a quick purchase of a 944 that then several other soon to be race cars. Her latest purchase is her new BMW E30 prepped race car. It even has a bit of history and we are sure Elizabeth will add to it as well.
3) Elizabeth and Jen commiserate about the wonderful weather at their first Lemons event. It was a downpour and the humidity hit a point where nearly all glass surfaces fogged making visibility even worse. We then go into the importance of seating position and the effect it can have on the driver's ability to see as well.
4) Bill starts a plan. Nothing good can come of this. It's looking like a girls race weekend is upcoming. Bill is bringing palm fronds and a butler outfit for the ladies.
5) The discussion on beginning to learn about working on cars from scratch begins around 28:30 or so. Some great information that should help others go from garage zero to Garage Hero. See what we did there, lol. It was too easy to resist.
6) To the surprise of no one, Vicki relates the car to her past arts and crafts projects. The analogy does hold some merit from a material perspective. Elizabeth has even gone into the area of the electrical system and wiring of her 944's.
7) The ladies provide a ton of tips and tricks that they have learned along the way. Some are very basic, but each one has been found to help us out.
8) Two words: parts car. (Does this mean Bill can buy another car? Sounds like it to him.)
9) Jen and Bill are next in line on learning to work on the race cars.
10) Vicki almost blows the super secret theme that we were working on and debuted at the Lemons race last weekend at PittRace. Photos
11) We then go into the favorite tools and tool highlights that Elizabeth and Vicki have at this point.
This is our Post Race hangover Episode Notes. We will replace later with a normal review when coherent, likely later this week.
In this episode, we go over how our first race weekend went for 2021. We had a great time racing and meeting all our friends.
Oh yeah, we WON our first race ever in the S10 El Jeffe Trophy Truck in Class C!!!!
Further proof that anyone really can do this. Why not start today? We'd love to see you on track with us.
The Semi Sentient Centenarians are a relatively new endurance racing team that are in the midst of an engine swap for their 1996 front wheel drive Buick Century A-body. Their team started much like every other team, including ours, and in their case they can blame Matthew, lol. They are a great bunch of guys learning as they go and trying to come up with the magical plan to dominate the C division of an upcoming race. They are another example of a group of people who were interested in racing but never thought it was possible or knew how to get started so they just jumped in and tried it and the hook was set. While we discussed their planned engine swap, we also had the opportunity to check back in the next week to see how the plan went. This is one team we can't wait to check back in with at the end of a full race season. So we didn't wait and added an update on the engine swap progress and project prognosis.
On this episode's Dominating with Dawson, we go into the topic of what is a money shift and then once we define what a money shift is, we then go into several different types of shifting and shifting issues that you may encounter with a manual transmission. If you aren't driving a manual transmission, at least the segment should be entertaining.

Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers
Highlights from this episode include:
1) We learn how their team started, developed, and became the team and drivers that they are today. One thing that they did well was to talk to other Lemons and experienced endurance racing teams to accelerate their teams learning.
2) The team's racing philosophy is very simple: Podium/Top 3. So far, so good in the one race to date. Lol.
3) The stories of what they did and what they learned at their first race is tremendous. It sounds like they truly jumped in the deep end of the pool with their first race being a ture 24 hour race at CMP. It sounds like some of the Racing 101 series would have helped them. It looks like we were only one year too late. However, they did win the IOE at their first race so who are we to say anything?
4) We walk through the logic of their upcoming engine swap and whether this is a good plan. It sounded great, and then the turbo plan kicked in. Luckily they have a full five weeks to get this done before their race at Sebring. How hard could it be?
5) Bill even resorted to math, but the +40 HP plan seems to be set in stone.
6) We then check back in after the weekend to get an update on the progress and the prognosis.
Our 2021 season started off with another skid pad and autocross event at Lime Rock Park. This time the event was held by the SCDA. We go into our goals for the event, how we did, and hopefully a long list of what we learned. The weather was great and more than we could have asked for this early in the season. In addition to a great event with tons of track time, we also met Elizabeth Jolly and her new to her E30 BMW 3 series race car. Actually, it was for the second time, as we had met at our teams second ever race in 2018 at the 24 Hours of Lemons race in Thompson Connecticut. Both Vicki and Jennifer were finally able to feel the pause in the CPR "Correct, Pause, and Recover" process of catching a car.
On this episode's Dominating with Dawson, we go into the speed at which you will use your hands. Typically, karters and autocross drivers are trained to move their hands much more quickly than a track driver, but there are times where fast hands are preferred. There is a good discussion of the times where you need to move your hands more quickly and times when a more slow and predictable hand movement is optimal. We also digress into a gumball machine discussion for a bit. It was a late night of recording, lol.

Highlights from this episode include:
1) We start with a summary of the team's goals going into the event and a summary of what the event would entail.
2) The cars that we brought with us were a 1999 NB Miata with a Flyin' Miata turbo for Vicki. Jennifer was driving in a stock 2019 ND Miata with DOT 4 brake fluid, but otherwise stock. Bill drove a similarly prepped 2017 Toyota 86. Both Vicki and Bill were on our endurance racing tires of choice the Hankook RS4's.
3) It was too early in the season for Lime Rock to open the sprinkler system for the skid pad so most of the day we drove on a dry skid pad. Jennifer and Vicki were able to get a few sessions on the skid pad with it wet.
4) We go into how we met Elizabeth and then proceeded to switch her into our race group and spent most of the day talking and driving with her. Her new to her E30 race car was awesome and she loved it from her first time behind the wheel on the skid pad, as everyone could tell on our Instagram interview with her, lol.
5) Jennifer's stomach has an issue with the LRP autocross course, but it was obvious she had improved from our last visit in October.
6) We discuss our first time driving on a dry skid pad and how it went with a partially wet/partially dry surface.
7) How we did versus our goals and what we learned. We could tell you here, but what fun would that be.
8) Vicki wins this weekend's GHiT award for being the most consistent on the autocross course as her best times differed by only 0.01 seconds.
9) To quote Vicki "I didn't give two squats about the line". Bill's response "I could tell", lol.
10) Bill was actually faster in the ND Miata that he was in the Toyota 86 while on the stock OEM continental tires. Bill also set his personal best ever Apex Score for several of the laps.
11) We ended our visit with a drive by stop at Don Pepe's pizza. Its "on the way" home and a great stop if you are in the area.
This is the last part of our 10-part Racing 101 series where we go over several topics we didn't mention in the other episodes and things that our listeners reminded us to mention. We are always trying to encourage people to try high performance driving and racing, so Vicki wanted to start a special series she calls "So You Wanna Racecar". We are sure that there are many more topics to cover and we will do so in upcoming episodes, as we are always learning. We also went over a recent podcast review and the sticker "bribes" are on the way. If anyone would like some decals for themselves, we are always willing to send them to you for a review.
The outline for the series is:
Part 1: Building Your First Race Car (and options to not)
Part 2: Safety and Safety Related Equipment Needed
Part 3: Best Entry Points To Start Performance Driving
Part 4: Buying and Selling Cars (With Special Guest Lara Vernon)
Part 5: Going To and From The Event/Track – What To Expect
Part 6: Paddock and Pit – Best Practices
Part 7: Perspective of a New Driver (With Guest Adam Owens)
Part 8: Tools, Spares, Supplies Needed for a Race Weekend
Part 9: Common Issues All Drivers Will/May Experience in When On Track For the First Time
Part 10: Miscellaneous Topics (& Things We Forget to Mention Earlier)
On this episode of Dominating with Dawson, we go over one of the most important topics related to racing, your confidence in the car that you are driving. There are a variety of ways to build confidence and as your confidence builds, your comfort will increase, and the focus can be applied to the driving of the car and the driving of your competitors and the race craft of passing and setting up passes of the other cars on track. This includes both car set up as well as familiarity of the car and track.

GHIT 0190: Mike Skeen is our Guest
We were honored to have Mike Skeen join our podcast as a guest. He is an amazing driver and has seemingly competed in every type of driving we can think of and it seems he usually wins. We go over a bit about how he progressed and what he is currently racing, as well as a great discussion on the skills and abilities that can separate a great driver from a typical amateur driver. He has a talent for explaining racing that rivals his driving skills. I think Vicki and Jen have now added working with Mike as a coach at a track. Bill was already on board that train long before the episode. We are pretty sure Ben may even look to join us for that.
On this episode of Dominating with Dawson, we have our first ever series of storytime questions with Ben, Vicki, and Jennifer where we try out two new fast and furious storytime questions.

Hosts of the Garage Heroes In Training Podcast and Garage Heroes In Training racing team drivers
Highlights from this episode include:
1) It all starts off with a bit where Vicki does a bit of a time delay/selective deafness to whatever Bill says. In other words, a normal day and episode. lol.
2) We learn a bit about how Mike worked his way up through various racing series and progressed to where he is currently competing as a professional driver.
3) Mike goes into the benefits of the different forms of racing he has done, how each helps him, and the benefits and excitement of cross training as a driver.
4) Bill dug deep and finally found something Mike hasn't tried racing, yet.
5) Mike does a great breakdown on the typical skill differences that separate a good professional driver from an amateur driver in a way that not only helps us to understand but really clarified what we need to look for and work on. ~31:00 in.
6) It was also great to hear that even Mike Skeen is still working on his driving and learning things from his recent driving and coaching in some prototype cars. Once again proving that we are all always "In Training".
