Garden America - Gardening Podcast & Talk Radio Show

In the early 1980s, Gregg Lowery's passion for old roses began to develop into one of the world's great collections. The rose collection was developed through gifts of plant material from then still-existent old gardens or small nurseries in the United States, from cuttings propagated from old plants discovered in California and other states at abandoned homesteads, old cemeteries and the like, and by purchasing and importing cultivars no longer available elsewhere from specialized nurseries abroad. His love of old roses resulted in documented inventories of 5,412 named cultivars. The Friends of Vintage Gardens is a volunteer organization that is working to inventory all remaining plants and to obtain replacements for lost specimens deemed worthy of continued representation in the collection. In this episode, Gregg will let us know about worldwide preservation efforts and his rose adventures in Belgium and Germany this summer.

Nick Davis is a grape and almond farmer in California's Central Valley. His Instagram account focuses on sharing the real story of what farming life is like.

Nick comes from a family farm and is well aware of the blood, sweat, and tears that go into growing crops for the world market. His grape harvest goes into wine, juice, and table grapes. Almond growers have come under criticism recently, but California produces about 80% of the world's almond crop. Aside from food production, almonds are becoming more popular for products like almond milk and other purées.

Kim Rupert's initial affection for gardening grew out of his experiences in his mother's garden. Leaving Alabama, he eventually established his home in the Los Angeles area in the late 1960's. And the urge to create his own garden began to develop. In the early 1980's he volunteered at the Huntington Rose Garden, helping to propagate rare and unusual roses, and soon was collecting roses of his own for the same purpose.

Today, Kim will share with our listeners a valuable online resource for information on roses, clematis and peonies. The Help Me Find website contains no advertising and is completely run by volunteers. Kim will talk about the site's features and how important support is for this non-profit organization to remain active.

Victoria Beeler is a butterfly enthusiast who enjoys gardening, wildlife, nature, and learning. She and her family have raised Monarchs - from eggs to caterpillars, to chrysalis, and to emerging butterflies - in an outdoor butterfly garden habitat at home near Atlanta for the first time last fall and then released them into the wild to migrate!

Victoria has written a documentary book about her Monarch experience with raising and releasing them. In her book, she combines photos of the Monarchs’ life stages and personal knowledge about Monarchs with the science. The butterflies' legacy can be continued by planting native milkweed. Monarchs have also inspired Victoria to give native milkweed seeds as gifts (seeds of hope) to family and friends and Monarch books to children in the community to save and protect Monarchs and continue their legacy.
