  • Gary Talks Physical Media: VCI Entertainment's Oil Capital Underground
In today’s episode of Gary Talks Physical Media, Gary takes a detour from movies and dives into the loud, raw and largely untold history of American punk with VCI Entertainment’s DVD release of Oil Capital Underground: The Genesis and Evolution of Punk Rock in Tulsa, Late ’70s – Mid ’90s.
Rather than focusing on the familiar punk scenes of New York, Los Angeles or London, Oil Capital Underground turns its attention to Tulsa, Oklahoma, chronicling the musicians, venues, personalities and underground culture that helped create and sustain the city’s punk rock scene from the late 1970s through the mid-1990s.
Through interviews, archival material, photographs, flyers, music and memories from the people who were actually there, the documentary explores how a punk community develops far away from the cities traditionally associated with the movement. It’s a story about music, but also about DIY culture, rebellion, creativity and the communities that form when outsiders decide to build something of their own.
Gary digs into the documentary and asks whether you need to know anything about the Tulsa punk scene to become invested in its story. What made this particular underground community unique? How does the film capture the energy of a scene that existed largely outside mainstream attention? And what can Tulsa’s story tell us about the countless regional music scenes that helped punk spread across America?
Gary also examines VCI Entertainment’s DVD release, including the video and audio presentation, archival material, supplemental content, packaging and overall value for collectors.
And yes, in an era dominated by 4K UHD and Blu-ray, this one arrives on DVD. But releases like Oil Capital Underground demonstrate why the format can still matter. Sometimes physical media isn't about resolution or Dolby Atmos. It’s about making sure a piece of cultural history exists on a disc at all.
That’s another reason Gary Talks Physical Media has become about more than simply reviewing the biggest new 4K releases. Physical media can preserve small pieces of film, music and cultural history that might otherwise disappear, whether that means an obscure international film, a forgotten cult movie or, in this case, decades of punk history from Tulsa, Oklahoma.
You may have never heard of the bands. You may have never stepped inside the clubs. You may not even have known Tulsa had a punk scene.
That might be exactly why this documentary is worth discovering.
Does Oil Capital Underground successfully capture the birth and evolution of Tulsa punk? And is VCI Entertainment’s DVD worth adding to your physical media collection?

  • Gary Talks Physical Media: 88 Films Delirium 4K
In today’s episode of Gary Talks Physical Media, Gary takes an in-depth look at 88 Films’ new 4K Ultra HD release of Delirium, the bizarre and stylish 1987 Italian horror thriller from director Lamberto Bava.
Also known as Le foto di Gioia and Delirium: Photo of Gioia, the film stars Serena Grandi as Gioia, a former model who now runs a successful men’s magazine. But when the models appearing in her publication begin turning up dead, Gioia finds herself at the center of a twisted murder mystery involving obsession, voyeurism, jealousy and a killer with a particularly warped point of view.
And when we say warped, we mean it.
Rather than simply showing us the killer stalking his victims, Bava occasionally lets us see them through the murderer’s distorted eyes, resulting in some of the strangest and most memorable imagery in 1980s Italian horror.
Gary dives into Delirium to see how this unusual mixture of giallo, slasher movie, erotic thriller and psychological horror holds up nearly 40 years later. Does the murder mystery work? How effective is Serena Grandi in the lead? Does the film deliver the visual flair fans expect from the Bava name? And just how gloriously strange does this movie get?
Then Gary examines 88 Films’ new 4K UHD release, including the 4K presentation and picture quality, HDR, audio, supplemental material, packaging and the overall collector experience.
For fans of Italian horror and giallo cinema, boutique physical media has become one of the best ways to rediscover films that once lived on the fringes of home video. Delirium certainly isn't conventional, but conventional isn't exactly what you come looking for when Lamberto Bava is behind the camera.
Has 88 Films delivered the definitive physical media edition of this wonderfully weird slice of 1980s Italian horror?
And most importantly, is Delirium worth adding to your 4K collection?

  • Gary Talks Physical Media: Pleasantville on Blu Ray
In today’s episode of Gary Talks Physical Media, Gary reaches back into the collection for a retro Blu-ray review of Pleasantville, the imaginative 1998 fantasy comedy-drama starring Tobey Maguire, Reese Witherspoon, Jeff Daniels, Joan Allen, William H. Macy and J.T. Walsh.
Written and directed by Gary Ross, Pleasantville begins when teenage siblings David and Jennifer are mysteriously transported into the world of a seemingly perfect 1950s television sitcom. Suddenly trapped inside a black-and-white town where everything is pleasant, predictable and safely scripted, the two begin introducing its residents to ideas and experiences their carefully controlled world has never encountered.
And then something remarkable begins happening.
    Color starts appearing.
What begins as a clever high-concept comedy gradually becomes something much more ambitious, using the transformation from black-and-white to color to explore individuality, conformity, repression, prejudice, sexuality, censorship, art and social change.
Gary revisits Pleasantville nearly three decades after its original release to see how the movie holds up today. Does its central metaphor remain as effective? How impressive are the film's groundbreaking visual effects? How well do Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon anchor the story? And just how great are Joan Allen, William H. Macy and Jeff Daniels as the residents of Pleasantville begin discovering that there may be more to life than following the script?
Gary also reaches back into the collection to examine the film’s Blu-ray release, including the picture quality, audio presentation, special features, packaging and how the disc holds up for collectors today.
With Pleasantville still unavailable on 4K UHD, is the existing Blu-ray the best way for physical media collectors to own Gary Ross’ visually distinctive film? And after all these years, is Pleasantville itself worth rediscovering?
Most importantly, does this Blu-ray still deserve a place in your physical media collection?

  • Gary Talks Physical Media: Radiance Film's Corruption Blu Ray
In today’s episode of Gary Talks Physical Media, Gary ventures into another fascinating corner of international cinema with Radiance Films’ Limited Edition Blu-ray release of Corruption, the 1963 Italian drama from director Mauro Bolognini.
Also known as La corruzione, the film stars Jacques Perrin as Stefano, a young man who returns home after completing his education with plans to enter the priesthood. His wealthy industrialist father, played by Alain Cuny, has very different plans for his son and wants Stefano to abandon his spiritual ambitions and take his place in the family business.
Determined to change Stefano’s mind, his father sends him on a yacht trip with the beautiful Adriana, played by Rosanna Schiaffino. What follows becomes a provocative examination of wealth, temptation, morality, sexuality and the seductive power of materialism.
Gary discovers Corruption and explores how Bolognini uses Stefano’s struggle between his ideals and his privileged surroundings to examine a society increasingly defined by money, pleasure and consumption. How accessible is the film more than 60 years later? How effective are its performances and striking visual style? And does its critique of materialism still resonate today?
Then Gary digs into Radiance Films’ Limited Edition Blu-ray, which marks the film’s world English-subtitled Blu-ray premiere, examining the 2K restoration and picture quality, audio presentation, supplemental material, packaging and booklet.
This is another example of what makes boutique physical media so interesting. Sometimes the most rewarding release isn't another edition of a movie you've seen a dozen times. It's a beautifully restored film you may never have encountered at all.
Has Radiance Films unearthed another international gem with Corruption? And most importantly, is this Limited Edition Blu-ray worth adding to your physical media collection?

  • Gary Talks Physical Media: Lionsgate Limited's Frailty 4K
In today’s episode of Gary Talks Physical Media, Gary takes an in-depth look at Lionsgate Limited’s new 4K Ultra HD release of Frailty, the chilling 2001 psychological horror thriller that marked the feature directorial debut of Bill Paxton.
Starring Bill Paxton, Matthew McConaughey, Powers Boothe, Matt O’Leary and Jeremy Sumpter, Frailty tells the disturbing story of two young brothers whose father suddenly announces that he has received a mission from God. He believes demons are walking among ordinary people, and that his family has been chosen to destroy them.
What follows is a dark Southern Gothic mixture of psychological horror, family drama, religious obsession and serial-killer thriller, built around one terrifying question: Is their father losing his mind, or could he actually be telling the truth?
Gary revisits Frailty more than two decades after its original release to see how the film holds up today. How effective is Bill Paxton’s direction? Does the movie’s unsettling exploration of faith and fanaticism remain as powerful? How well do the performances hold up, particularly Paxton and a young Matthew McConaughey? And does knowing where the story ultimately goes change the experience when watching it again?
Then Gary digs into Lionsgate Limited’s new 4K UHD edition, examining the 4K presentation and picture quality, HDR, audio, special features and bonus material, packaging, artwork and overall collector experience.
Frailty has developed a devoted following since its original release, but it remains a movie that sometimes slips through the cracks when people discuss the great horror and psychological thrillers of the early 2000s.
Does Frailty deserve a larger place in the conversation? Has Lionsgate Limited given Bill Paxton’s haunting directorial debut the physical media treatment it deserves?

  • Gary Talks Physical Media: Synapse's TAG: The Assassination Game Blu Ray
In today’s episode of Gary Talks Physical Media, Gary takes an in-depth look at Synapse Films’ new Blu-ray release of TAG: The Assassination Game, the wonderfully strange 1982 cult comedy thriller starring Robert Carradine and Linda Hamilton.
Long before laser tag and multiplayer video games took over college campuses, TAG: The Assassination Game imagined a campus-wide competition where students stalk one another with toy guns, eliminating their classmates until only one player remains. It’s supposed to be harmless fun, until somebody decides to start playing the game for real.
Directed by Nick Castle, who horror fans also know as the original Shape from John Carpenter’s Halloween, the movie combines college comedy, romance, suspense and slasher-movie elements into a peculiar early-1980s cocktail. Robert Carradine stars as Alex Marsh, a student who becomes involved with the game and with Linda Hamilton’s Susan Swayze, only to find himself caught up in something considerably more dangerous than a campus competition.
Gary revisits TAG: The Assassination Game to see how this largely forgotten piece of 1980s cult cinema plays today. Does its unusual combination of comedy and thriller actually work? How do Robert Carradine and Linda Hamilton fare in roles from early in their careers? Does the movie deserve to be rediscovered? And exactly how seriously should anyone take a college game involving trench coats and brightly colored toy guns?
Then Gary digs into Synapse Films’ new Blu-ray release, examining the picture quality and transfer, audio presentation, special features and bonus material, packaging and overall presentation.
One of the joys of boutique physical media is seeing movies that could easily disappear into the cracks of film history receive another chance to find an audience. Is TAG: The Assassination Game one of those forgotten movies worth rediscovering?

  • Gary Talks Physical Media: Arrow Video's Go 4K
In today’s episode of Gary Talks Physical Media, Gary takes an in-depth look at Arrow Video’s brand-new 4K Ultra HD release of Go, director Doug Liman’s fast, funny and wildly energetic 1999 cult favorite.
Coming just a few years after Swingers and before Liman would move on to films like The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow, Go captures the frantic energy of the late 1990s through three interconnected stories unfolding over one increasingly chaotic night.
The ensemble cast includes Sarah Polley, Katie Holmes, Jay Mohr, Scott Wolf, Timothy Olyphant, Taye Diggs, Breckin Meyer, Desmond Askew and Jane Krakowski, as a seemingly simple drug deal spirals into an unpredictable collision of Las Vegas, cops, criminals, parties, bad decisions and some very questionable life choices.
Gary revisits Go more than 25 years after its original release to see how this quintessentially late-1990s cult movie holds up today. Does its nonlinear storytelling still work? Has its hyperactive style aged well? How does the ensemble cast hold up? And does Go deserve to be rediscovered by viewers who may have missed it the first time around?
Then Gary digs into Arrow Video’s new Limited Edition 4K UHD release, examining the 4K restoration and picture quality, HDR presentation, audio, special features and bonus material, packaging, booklet and overall collector experience.

  • Gary Talks Physical Media: Second Run's Jiri Trnka: Puppet Master Blu Ray Collection
In today’s episode of Gary Talks Physical Media, Gary ventures into a very different corner of the collection with Second Run’s Blu-ray release of Jiří Trnka: Puppet Master, a collection celebrating the work of legendary Czech animator and filmmaker Jiří Trnka.
Rather than a conventional feature-film release, Jiří Trnka: Puppet Master offers an opportunity to explore the remarkable world of Czech puppet animation through two of Trnka’s feature-length works, Old Czech Legends (Staré pověsti české) and The Czech Year (Špalíček).
For physical media collectors accustomed to Hollywood classics, horror movies, action films and new 4K restorations, this release represents something quite different: a chance to discover an influential filmmaker and an extraordinary form of handcrafted cinema that might otherwise remain difficult for modern audiences to experience.
Gary dives into both films and Trnka’s distinctive approach to stop-motion and puppet animation, examining the elaborate puppets, production design, atmosphere and visual storytelling that give these films an identity unlike almost anything being produced today.
How accessible are these films to someone encountering Jiří Trnka for the first time? Does the animation still impress decades after the films were created? And can a collection like this turn a curious physical media collector into a new fan of an entirely different chapter of animation history?
Gary also takes a close look at Second Run’s Blu-ray presentation, including the restorations and picture quality, audio, supplemental material, packaging and the historical context surrounding the films.
Boutique physical media is often at its most exciting when it does more than give us another edition of a movie we already know. Sometimes it can put an important piece of cinema history on the shelf that many viewers have never had the opportunity to discover.
Is Jiří Trnka: Puppet Master one of those releases? And is Second Run’s Blu-ray worth adding to your collection?

  • Gary Talks Physical Media: Scream Factory's Teen Wolf Collector's Edition Blu Ray
In today’s episode of Gary Talks Physical Media, Gary reaches back into the collection for a retro Blu-ray review of Teen Wolf, the beloved 1985 comedy starring Michael J. Fox, with a look at Scream Factory’s Collector’s Edition Blu-ray.
Released the same year that Fox became a movie star with Back to the Future, Teen Wolf offers a very different spin on the teenage transformation story. Fox stars as Scott Howard, an ordinary high school student struggling with basketball, romance and fitting in until he discovers that being a werewolf happens to run in the family. Suddenly Scott goes from invisible teenager to the most popular kid in school, but becoming the Wolf may be a lot easier than figuring out who he actually wants to be.
Gary revisits Teen Wolf more than 40 years after its original release to see how this quintessentially 1980s comedy holds up today. Is Michael J. Fox still the movie’s secret weapon? Does the combination of high school comedy, basketball, romance and werewolf mythology still work? And beneath all the wonderfully goofy 1980s trappings, does Teen Wolf have more heart than its ridiculous premise suggests?
And, of course, there’s Stiles, because you really can’t talk about Teen Wolf without talking about Stiles.
Then Gary digs into Scream Factory’s Collector’s Edition Blu-ray, examining the picture quality and transfer, audio presentation, special features and bonus material, packaging and overall collector experience.
With Teen Wolf remaining a nostalgic favorite decades after its release, does this Scream Factory Collector’s Edition still hold up as the Blu-ray to own? • Gary Talks Physical Media: Troma Film's Sweet Meats Blu Ray
In today’s episode of Gary Talks Physical Media, Gary takes a look at Troma Entertainment’s new Blu-ray release of Sweet Meats, a gloriously offbeat horror comedy that feels right at home under the Troma banner.
With the irresistible tagline “Meat. Murder. Music. Delicious!”, Sweet Meats serves up a deliberately outrageous mixture of horror, comedy, gore, music and exploitation-movie madness. It’s the kind of unapologetically strange independent filmmaking that has helped make Troma a home for cult cinema for more than 50 years.
Gary dives into the movie to see whether this bizarre concoction delivers the goods. Is Sweet Meats funny? Is it appropriately disgusting? Does its low-budget aesthetic add to the charm? And most importantly, does it have the personality and sheer weirdness necessary to become a future Troma cult favorite?
Then it’s time to crack open the new Troma Blu-ray release and examine the complete physical media package, including the picture quality, audio presentation, special features and bonus material, packaging and overall presentation.
For longtime Troma fans, does Sweet Meats deserve a spot alongside the wonderfully strange movies already occupying their shelves? And for physical media collectors who may be curious about venturing deeper into the wild world of independent cult cinema, is this Blu-ray worth picking up?
