Our experience of COVID and lockdown has shown us that so much of our life has become temporary, and so we must remember to remain focused on the things that are eternal. We are called to be a living, breathing outpouring of God’s love within the world and by doing so, are used in God’s construction of his Kingdom.

We are invited to shelter-in-place with God - to remember the ways he has been our refuge, to repent of our own efforts to paper over our anxiety, and to reside with him permanently. In order that we might be able to say with the psalmist, "We will not fear."

This weekend in Sydney we entered another period of lockdown due to a resurgence of COVID 19. This lockdown is the first city-wide lockdown since March 2020 and I think it's fair to say that we're all a bit rattled. This sermon was pre-recorded before the lockdown was announced and doesn't directly address this situation, but I hope that wherever you are, this message will speak to you and your situation.

In NSW it also happens to be the school holidays and we have returned to a series that we started in the last term break entitled "On This Rock" in which the sermon is a reflection on a particularly foundational text for the preacher. This week is one of mine: the call of Jeremiah.

When God invites us to participate with him in his grand plan to renew and restore all things we can, like Jeremiah, all too easily identify reasons we are not suitable for the task. However, at the end of the day, we are called - not to be perfectly suitable, but to be faithful. I hope and pray that this week you will be faithful to the call of God and look to his provision to enable you in the task at hand.

This week we finish our series entitled "Following Jesus in John's Gospel" in which we are exploring John's somewhat unique way of describing discipleship in his account of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. Associate pastor Matt Willis brings the series to a conclusion with a reflection on Jesus' words in chapter 15, "I am the true vine and my Father is the gardener".

Following Jesus is, once again, more about the one we follow than our ability to follow. Remaining in him is where fruitfulness starts.

Remain in him.

The message was given on the occasion of a baptism service in our evening congregation. It is a word directed to those who were about to be baptised. I hope that, by listening in, you will be challenged and encouraged as well.

If you have placed your faith in Jesus but have not yet been baptised let me invite you to consider if that might not be your next faithful step as you follow Jesus. As you follow Jesus, guard your heart, listen to Jesus, and sow the seed you have been given that others might begin to follow him too.

This message will form the basis for the Big Three podcast, a weekly podcast that addresses three big questions raised by the message or service. This week we will be dealing with what we call "a fourth question" - a single topic that is big enough to justify its own podcast. In this case, baptism. The Big Three is generally released on Wednesday afternoons and is available on all major podcast platforms.

The risen Jesus invites us to participate with him in his plans to restore and renew the world, but doesn't leave us to our own devices, but resources us abundantly for the task at hand. Will you follow him?

In this week's message we turn to another "follow me" passage in John's gospel but with a twist; instead of an open invitation to follow Jesus tells his disciples there are limits placed around our ability to follow.

When we place our trust in Jesus he binds himself to us and we walk with him to be where he is. On our own we may not be able to follow him, but in his forgiveness, grace, and mercy and through the enabling presence of the Spirit we are able to walk with him.
