We play the interview Andrew did with comic artist Sean Phillips from this years TCAF Show (Toronto Comic Arts Festival) held at the Toronto Reference Library. Sean works exclusively with writer Ed Brubaker and the two have created some amazing crime noir and hard boiled comics over the years. The story is about Dylan, a depressed college student who attempts suicide. He survives due to unlikely events, but is soon visited by a demon who explains he spared Dylan’s life. Our review of Alien: Covenant starring Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston and Danny McBride. Synopsis: Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, members (Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup) of the colony ship Covenant discover what they think to be an uncharted paradise. While there, they meet David (Michael Fassbender), the synthetic survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition. The mysterious world soon turns dark and dangerous when a hostile alien life-form forces the crew into a deadly fight for survival.
Our second guest is also no stranger to Geek Hard as she was a frequent guest in the early days of the show: Liana Kerzner. Liana is in the midst of a successful Kickstarter campaign for Lady Bits, a new series about women in video games. The project has already been funded but she’s working towards stretch goals to make the show even greater. Here’s the Kickstarter pitch – With your funding, we’ll look at the female characters in video games, the women who make video games, and the women who play video games. This is a discussion, not a lecture! Lady Bits will ask the questions and provide the information. Then you’ll determine your own answers. No stress, no judgments, no accusations.  A series about a fun hobby should reflect that fun, and a series that looks at games should be hosted, written, and produced by a gamer. To find out more on Lady Bits, check out the Kickstarter Page.

This time, she’ll be on to tell us all about her latest middle-grade novel, The Explorers: The Door in the Alley, which was released in book stores last month. This is one of those stories that start with a pig in a teeny hat. It’s not the one you’re thinking about. (This story is way better than that one.) This pig-in-a-teeny-hat story starts when a very uninquisitive boy stumbles upon a very mysterious society. After that, there is danger and adventure; there are missing persons, hired thugs, a hidden box, a lost map, and famous explorers; and there is a girl looking for help that only uninquisitive boys can offer. We talk with Christian Lipski, one third of The PDX Broadsides. Other themes covered on the album include: geekery, social justice, feminism, and self-esteem. Christian talks to us all about it and inform us on which stretch goals they’ve yet to unlock. Christian has been a comics journalist, a judge for the 2014 Eisner Awards, and a tech support engineer. He plays drums, listens to David Bowie, and acts as a pirate in PDXYAR, but is very bad at video games. You can check out the kickstarter campaign for Trust Issues HERE!
Our review of The Circle starring Emma Watson, Tom Hanks and John Boyega. Synopsis: Mae Holland (Emma Watson) seizes the opportunity of a lifetime when she lands a job with the world’s most powerful technology and social media company. Encouraged by the company’s founder (Tom Hanks), Mae joins a groundbreaking experiment that pushes the boundaries of privacy, ethics and personal freedom. Her participation in the experiment, and every decision she makes soon starts to affect the lives and futures of her friends, family and that of humanity.
We also talk with author Jeff Vandermeer. Best known for his Southern Reach Trilogy, Jeff joined us to tell us all about his new book, Borne, which hits bookstores this week. Here’s a quick synopsis on Borne: In Borne, a young woman named Rachel survives as a scavenger in a ruined, dangerous city of the near future. The city is littered with discarded experiments from the Company and punished by the unpredictable attacks of a giant bear. From one of her scavenging missions, Rachel brings home Borne, who is little more than a green lump (plant or animal?) but exudes a strange charisma. Rachel feels a growing attachment to Borne, a protectiveness that she can ill-afford. It’s exactly the kind of vulnerability that will upend her precarious existence, unnerving her partner, wick, and upsetting the delicate balance of their unforgiving city – possibly forever.

Our look back on the 40th Anniversary of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. There’s been many a things said about Star Wars on our show over the years, but it’s safe to say that this will probably be the biggest homage we’ve ever given to the franchise. It’s also safe to say that Han shot first, but you already knew that.
We also talk with comic artist Dan Brereton. Dan has had an amazing career in the world of comics, drawing a host of different characters. He’ll be on to tell us all about it. Dan Brereton is one of a bare handful of painters left in the industry who still do comics full time. Just barely out of art school, Dan burst onto the scene in 1989 with the award winning BLACK TERROR miniseries (Eclipse Comics) and hasn’t looked back since. Brereton gained further attention for his work on Batman: Thrillkiller, Superman and Batman: Legends of the World’s Finest, and JLA: Seven Caskets.
