  • Geek Hard: Episode 356 – Dig Two Ghosts

    We discuss the recent news of the week. DC/WB announces they in talks to sign Joss Whedon to direct a Batgirl movie. Brian Micheal Bendis’ Torso has been optioned again now with Paul Greengrass on directing. Rainn Wilson announced as reviving Harry Mudd for Star Trek: Discovery. Some thoughts on the latest Spider-Man Homecoming trailer dropped this week.
    Our review of Ghost in the Shell starring Scarlett Johansson, Pilou Asbæk and Takeshi Kitano. Synopsis: In the near future, Major is the first of her kind: a human who is cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world’s most dangerous criminals. When terrorism reaches a new level that includes the ability to hack into people’s minds and control them, Major is uniquely qualified to stop it. As she prepares to face a new enemy, Major discovers that her life was stolen instead of saved. Now, she will stop at nothing to recover her past while punishing those who did this to her.
    We also talk with filmmaker Hunter Adams. Hunter’s film, Dig Two Graves, was released last Friday in theatres and on demand across the U.S. and he tells us all about it. Dig Two Graves follows 13-year-old Jacqueline Mather (Samantha Isler) who, after losing her brother in a mysterious drowning accident, is soon visited by 3 moonshiners who offer to bring her brother back to life but at a grim cost. As the dark history of her grandfather, Sheriff Waterhouse (Ted Levine) is unearthed the true intentions of the moonshiners come to light.     We discuss the recent news of the week. The title announcement of Godzilla: Monster Planet coming this summer. The passing of legendary comic artist Bernie Wrightson & the TV gameshow legend Chuck Barris. The latest 3D printing invention from Sweden – a cheap room sized 3D printer.
    Our review of Power Rangers starring Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott and RJ Cyler. Synopsis: Five ordinary teens must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and before it’s too late, band together as the Power Rangers.
    We also talk with comic artist Leslie Hung who’s currently drawing Snotgirl (written by Bryan Lee O’Malley) for Image Comics. Leslie will be on to talk about the book and maybe tell us what we can expect when the series returns to the spinner racks. Here’s some more info on Snotgirl – From bestselling BRYAN LEE O’MALLEY (Scott Pilgrim) and superstar newcomer LESLIE HUNG! Lottie Person is a glamorous fashion blogger living her best life—at least that’s what she wants you to think. The truth is, her friends are terrible people, her boyfriend traded her up for someone younger, her allergies are out of control, and she may or may not have killed somebody!

    We discuss the recent news regarding Thor: Ragnarok coming November 2017. With the recent photos released showing Chris Hemworth’s Thor with short hair and the released plot synopsis. We have lot’s of thoughts on this and as always are happy to share them with you.
    Our review of Iron Fist starring Finn Jones, Jessica Henwick and Jessica Stroup. Synopsis: Billionaire Danny Rand (Finn Jones) returns to New York City after being missing for years, trying to reconnect with his past and his family legacy. He fights against the criminal element corrupting New York City with his kung fu mastery and ability to summon the awesome power of the fiery Iron Fist.
    We also talk with a longtime friend of Geek Hard, comic writer Ed Brisson. Ed’s currently writing a Bullseye miniseries for Marvel and also has a few new comics coming soon, including a new Iron Fist series, slated to drop in the next couple of weeks. He’ll be on to tell us all what we can expect from the new comic and more.Ed Brisson is a comic book writer who first started to garner attention with his self-published crime series MURDER BOOK. He broke into the public spotlight in 2012 with the crime/time-travel thriller series COMEBACK (Shadowline/Image Comics). In the short time since then, he’s written and co-created four other series published by Image: SHELTERED, THE FIELD, THE MANTLE and THE VIOLENT. Ed has also written for BOOM, Marvel, DC, IDW and many others.

    We speak with filmmaker Ferne Pearlstein to talk about her documentary, The Last Laugh, which explores taboos in humour through the lens of the Holocaust. Featuring interviews with top comics Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Sarah Silverman, Gilbert Gottfried, Harry Shearer, Jeff Ross, Alan Zweibel, Judy Gold, Susie Essman and Larry Charles, along with Holocaust survivors and critical thinkers, this film looks at important subject matter while still being funny. Ferne talks to us about the movie, now playing in New York and opening in L.A. on March 17th (with a national rollout planned as well).
    Our review of Kong: Skull Island starring Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson & Brie Larson. Synopsis: Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ “Kong: Skull Island” reimagines the origin of the mythic Kong in a compelling, original adventure from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts. In the film, a diverse team of explorers is brought together to venture deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific—as beautiful as it is treacherous—unaware that they’re crossing into the domain of the mythic Kong.

    We discuss the news of the week. Rumours that David Harbour (Stranger Things) is up for the role of Cable in Deadpool 2. Neil Gaiman signs a “first-look” deal with Freemantle Entertainment. The sudden passing of actor Bill Paxton of Aliens, Twister, True Lies, Near Dark and Frailty.
    Our review of Logan starring Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart & Dafne Keen. Synopsis: It’s 2029. Mutants are gone—or very nearly so. An isolated, despondent Logan is drinking his days away in a hideout on a remote stretch of the Mexican border, picking up petty cash as a driver for hire. His companions in exile are the outcast Caliban and an ailing Professor X, whose singular mind is plagued by worsening seizures. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy abruptly end when a mysterious woman appears with an urgent request—that Logan shepherd an extraordinary young girl to safety. Soon, the claws come out as Logan must face off against dark forces and a villain from his own past on a live-or-die mission, one that will set the time-worn warrior on a path toward fulfilling his destiny.
    We also talk in studio with Jamillah Ross & Danielle Cole of The Dandies, a Toronto based Star Trek themed improv troupe. Also joining us by phone will be Dale Wells, a good friend of the show and one of the founding members of The Dandies. The Dandies will be beaming down to the Toronto ComiCon (Metro Toronto Convention Centre – March 17th to 19th) to put on a few shows (two Trek focused and one based on Superheroes). The Dandies were formed by Andie Leathley and Dale Wells in 2010. Their flagship show is Holodeck Follies, a monthly improvised Star Trek comedy and variety show, created in 2012. The Dandies were nominated as Best Improv Troupe in Now Toronto’s Reader’s Choice award (2015, 2014).

  • Geek Hard: Episode 351 – Powerless in Riverdale Vs a Predator
    Originally Aired: 02/24/17
    We take a look back on the 30th Anniversary of Predator starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers and Kevin Peter Hall. Synopsis: Dutch (Arnold Schwarzenegger) has a code of honor which he will not violate, even when his life depends on it. Dutch and his team are sent on a covert mission to rescue another group which has gone missing in a Latin American country. When Dutch and his team go into the jungle to rescue the others a pitched battle with local guerrillas. They soon encounter signs that the equally capable men they were sent to rescue were all killed in an unusually gruesome fashion. Now the men from Dutch’s own team are getting picked off one by one. They realize that they are up against something not of this world, something that is hunting them for sport.
    We also talk with Marvel and Archie Comics artist Michael Walsh! Michael talked about two upcoming projects: A two issue arc on Hawkeye and an Archie Horror one shot, Jughead: The Hunger. There was also of course some Star Wars talk as always with Michael. Michael Walsh is a Canadian comic-book creator. Michael is best known in comics for his work on Marvel’s Secret Avengers and Rocket and Groot, The X-Files: Season 10, Comeback and Zero #1. His publishers include Marvel, IDW, Image, and Valiant. His other work includes the Shuster nominated webcomic MURDERBOOK, BROTHERS JAMES, and the prequel comic for the popular Showcase television show CONTINUUM. For more on Michael, check out his tumblr.
    We also take a look at new comic-inspired television! We give our thoughts on the latest comic book inspired TV series premiere episodes of Riverdale, Powerless and Legion. Each one has it’s own unique view of the material while none are overly faithful to the source material. We share what we thought of each one.

    We discuss the news of the week. Rumours that Ben Affleck might be quitting the DC/WB character of Batman. Marvel announces a NEW Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man written by Chip Zdarsky. More rumours flying around DC/WB looking at Mel Gibson to direct the sequel to The Suicide Squad. WB has signed a new deal after the early success of Riverdale on the CW. Kevin Smith announced as working on a Spawn spinoff show based Image Comics characters Sam and Twitch for BBC America.
    Our review of The Great Wall starring Matt Damon, Jing Tian and Pedro Pascal. Synopsis: Starring global superstar Matt Damon and directed by one of the most breathtaking visual stylists of our time, Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers), Legendary’s The Great Wall tells the story of an elite force making a valiant stand for humanity on the world’s most iconic structure. The first English-language production for Yimou is the largest film ever shot entirely in China.
    We also talk with actor Michelle Morgan. Best known for her long standing role on the CBC Series, Heartland, Michelle’s latest project see’s her exploring hard sci-fi with the upcoming web series, Deep Six. She tells us what it’s like working on a show that roots itself in science fact and practical effects. Michelle Morgan starred in the television series Heartland (2007) for CBC, based on the books by Lauren Brooke. Michelle played the character Lou Flemming, the prodigal daughter who returns to Heartland from New York after her mother’s death. On the big screen, Michelle was in the lead role as Debra Moynihan in George A. Romero’s Diary of the Dead (2007). The film made it’s debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. Other notable television appearances included the character F.R.A.N on Stargate: Atlantis (2004) and guest starring roles on Supernatural (2015), Package Deal (2013) and The L Word (2004).

  • Geek Hard: Episode 349 – Deep Expanse of the Bat

    We talk with Wes Chatham who plays Amos Burton on The Expanse. The popular Syfy series has returned to television and Wes talked about the success of the series as well as what to expect as the new season unfolds. Wes Chatham’s film credits include In the Valley of Elah, W., The Help and The Town That Dreaded Sundown. He’s perhaps best known for his portrayal of Castor in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 & Part 2. Wes’ television credits include Sleeper Cell, Barbershop, The Unit and The Mentalist.
    Our review of The LEGO Batman Movie starring Will Arnett, Michael Cera & Rosario Dawson. Synopsis: There are big changes brewing in Gotham, but if Batman (Will Arnett) wants to save the city from the Joker’s (Zach Galifianakis) hostile takeover, he may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up. Maybe his superhero sidekick Robin (Michael Cera) and loyal butler Alfred (Ralph Fiennes) can show him a thing or two.
    We also talk with Mika Collins, one of the stars and co-creator of Deep Six, an upcoming hard sci-fi web series that just wrapped production. Deep Six is the story of an elite group of astronauts on a mission in deep space who must fend for themselves after an accident cuts them off from communicating with Earth. Mika tells us all about the inner workings of this new series from behind and in front of the camera. Mika Collins is an award-winning writer and performer originally from South Africa, and is co-creator of Deep Six. Her writing credits include the upcoming Netflix/Showcase original series, Travelers, Smokebomb’s V Morgan is Dead, the award-winning short film, The Pamplemousse, and the one-person play, Capturing Freedom. Mika’s an alumnus of the Canadian Film Centre’s Prime Time TV Writing Residency and finalist for the Sundance Screenwriter’s Lab.

  • Geek Hard: Episode 348 – The Froggy’s Between Us

    We discuss the news of the week. The official pickup of the pilot for DC’s Black Lightning by The CW. The passing of a friend of the show Andre Arruda a local comedian and accessibility advocate. The retirement of Bernie Wrightson from comics due to his difficulties with a recent illness. Lucasfilm overall story continuity for the movies, Marvel Comics and Del Rey books – now includes a link for Darth maul to Episode VII.
    Our review of The Space Between Us starring Asa Butterfield, Britt Robertson and Carla Gugino. Synopsis: In this interplanetary adventure, shortly after arriving to help colonize Mars, an astronaut dies while giving birth to the first human born on the red planet. Thus begins the extraordinary life of Gardner Elliot – an inquisitive, highly intelligent boy who reaches the age of 16 having only met 14 people in his very unconventional upbringing. While searching for clues about his father, and the home planet he’s never known, Gardner begins an online friendship with a street smart girl named Tulsa. When he finally gets a chance to go to Earth, Gardner is eager to experience all of the wonders he could only read about on Mars. But after his explorations begin, scientists discover that Gardner’s organs can’t withstand Earth’s atmosphere. Gardner joins with Tulsa on a race against time to unravel the mysteries of how he came to be, and where he belongs in the universe.
    We present the Froggy’s! That’s right is that time of year again where we present our Froggy Awards to the guests we have spoken to in 2016. With the help of our 2012 Golden Grant Award Winner J. Torres. He joins us in studio to help once again to give out the award to our Best Comic Creator Guest of 2016 – aka The Golden Grant Award. Marjorie Liu called in to accept her award and speak with us about Monstress & Han Solo. We also gave out the award for the Best Video Interview of 2016. After much deliberation we gave this award to Dana DeLorenzo who Mr. Green spoke with at Fan Expo 2016 about season 2 of Ash Vs. Evil Dead. And finally the award for our Guest of the Year 2016 went to actor/comedian/podcaster Henry Zebrowski! Henry joined us via phone to accept his award and talk with us about Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell and his podcast The Last Podcast on the Left.

    We talk with film critic Richard Crouse, who curated this year’s lineup for the Flashback Film Festival (brought to you by Cineplex). Coming to 24 cities across Canada this February, the festival celebrates some fan favourite films from the past by giving you a chance to see them up on the big screen once again. Richard is a well known film critic and author who’s put together a mix of big action, smart drama and heartwarming films from the 80s and 90s for fans to enjoy, including the likes of Bladerunner (The Final Cut), Fight Club, Jurassic Park, The Princess Bride and more! Richard Crouse is the regular film critic for Canada AM and CP24. He was the host of Reel to Real, Canada’s longest running television show about movies, from 1998 to 2008 and is a frequent guest on many national Canadian radio and television shows. His syndicated Saturday afternoon radio show, The Richard Crouse Show, originates on News Talk 1010 in Toronto. He is  the author of six books on pop culture history and writes a weekly column for Metro newspaper.
    Our review of xXx: Return of Xander Cage starring Vin Diesel, Donnie Yen and Deepika Padukone. Synopsis: After coming out of self-imposed exile, daredevil operative Xander Cage (Vin Diesel) must race against time to recover a sinister weapon known as Pandora’s Box, a device that controls every military satellite in the world. Recruiting a new group of thrill-seeking cohorts, Xander finds himself entangled in a deadly conspiracy that points to collusion at the highest levels of government.
    We also talk with Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol, the stars and creators of Nirvanna the Band the Show. What started as a web series back in the late 2000s is now a 10 episode television program premiering on Viceland on February 2nd. Matt Johnson rose to prominence in the independent film world with his film The Dirties and has since followed it up with Operation Avalanche. When the opportunity came up to make a show for Vice, he decided to “bring the band back together” with a new take on his former web show. Matt and Jay will be on to talk about the series that follows one band who will stop at nothing to book a show at the Rivoli in Toronto….except, just ask to be booked like normal human beings.
